In this highly requested video, I fly the Gulfstream with Brad from Van Nuys (KVNY) to San Jose (KSJC) and discuss some of the secrets to being a successful contract pilot. As always, the departure out of Van Nuys is a hectic one (I also cut out the 30 minutes we had to wait our turn to depart). I hope some of you who are thinking about taking the leap from your full time job to contract find this video helpful. I’ve already filmed another video talking about both Brad and I’s personal experience of becoming full time contractors so be on the lookout for that. Note that we do not discuss ways to time build in this video. I will talk about how I built my flight time to become a Gulfstream driver in a future vlog.

Wow, another outstanding video. I don't know where the time goes. That was the quickest 25 minutes I have experienced all week. You and Brad really click together in the front office. So much valuable information to be a successful contract pilot like yourself, and Brad. Love the radio chatter as always, and I thank you once again for not double timing the audio, lol I hate that. Have a wonderful day.

You need to do a deeper dive where you tell everyone how to achieve the type ratings as an independent. You’re probably going to have to pay for your own type rating (unless you leave a previous job that paid for a type) and then your own recurrent training and then also be sure to file your taxes properly at the end of the year because you’re independent contractor. All super important things to realize before trying to get into this kind of thing. Do you get KCM as a full time contract pilot? I would assume so just never had to think about that since I’ve always been able to do it on the side and my full time gig pays for recurring and takes care of KCM and stuff. Always a good video. Nice landing.

thats $750,000 a year for contract pilots, assuming they fly every day.. so if an owner just paid someone $250,000 a year to be their sole pilot, they are mkaing out pretty well, and the pilot is too, especially if they dont fly all the time.

This makes me wish I had gone to CA. in the 80's. I was fresh out of the Air Force(not as a pilot) and had been in pilot training before and during my military time. I really think now that people in California would've been more helpful than where I was at that time in helping me make it as a pilot. California was ahead of most of the country back in those years and it seems like you could get more training time in with the good weather in Southern California. All of this is a moot point now 40 years later, but I wish we could go back in time and make changes in our lives so we could live our dreams instead of sitting around thinking about what could've been. I would be ready to retire in a few years or maybe I could be retired right now, just missed out on a lot of adventures not going when I could have.

its nothing like airline flying...much much more demanding flying, uncontrolled airports, bad weather, gps approaches, no approach lights, 14 hours on 10 hours off and thats if you're at the best fractional place, otherwise you have no duty time limits... ect. Private jet pilots should be making $1,000,000 a year at least for that job.

Well, Joaoalves, see if you can stay in touch with Owen here. If you want to transition ove to corporate business jet flying. At least, hopefully, you will be able to make your own schedule from referrals what flights you what to fly. Instead of flying with 200 or 300 passengers in the back of the cabin you would be flying with possibly 10 or 12 passengers in the and one ir two corporate Flight Attendants. Yes, there will be pros and cons but it is what you said that you want to transition to. Again, stay in contact with Owen and his friend here as well.

I want to thank Owen for sharing his passion to fly. And if other pilots want to go from commercial airline to corporate business jets then so be it. There is a lot of travel on the corporate side of the Aviation business. And so since Owen shares his knowledge and has a lot of pilot friends who also fly on a contract corporate pilot free schedule then why not. There are other corporate pilot jobs as well. A commercial pilot my go over to a charter or a client fractional ownership company like Netjets or Flexjets and others. So, there are other ways to enjoy flying and maintaining some great income. Flying a Gulfstream or Bombardier or a Cessna aircraft is not a bad thing at all. There are some great owners out there who need pilots to fly their aircraft. So, yes, Joaoalver has to do some research and ask around to many different pilots to her a good understanding as to how to transition over to Corporate Business Jets.
