After spending the day trying to remove a rusted and damaged windlass on the Hatteras Yacht, we head back to the land house. I show how we made a 15 inch chart plotter / navigation screen for only $125 and an old cell phone.

Speaking from experience, it's always a heart stopping moment when you discover wet, rotting plywood anywhere on your boat. I had to rebuild both of the lazarette hatches in the floor of my cockpit deck last year. However, at least I'll never find any rot there again after the repairs, thanks to the miracle of Coosa board.

Hopefully it is not too bad. I hope to find out this weekend, if I can get the rest of the windlass removed.

@@tryingnottosink9107 I sincerely hope you have better luck than I did. When I first bought my boat ten years ago, I too found the loose bolts on the windless. The surveyor had totally missed seeing any problem with it, but when I took it apart, I found lots of problems. Water had gotten down both the bolt holes and under the cat head and into the actual hole in the deck the windless drive comes up through. It had rotted an area of my bow deck of about 3 square feet. Even worse, it had gotten into the back end of my bow pulpit and rotted the aft six inches of it too. The pulpit had to be removed, disassembled and have the entire core replaced. I was sad for weeks after that bill. Oh well, having a big yard bill is still better than going to set your anchor and having your pulpit break loose from the hull...lol. Had a friend that had that happen in the Bahamas. Yikes!

Your trip into the bow reminded me of having to work on a 5.5 meter (transmitting) satellite dish. The "hub" was about the size of a 55 gallon drum, and it was me, a squirrel cage blower to keep the feed from freezing, the transmitter and the amplifier for the receiver. Oh, and a very greasy chain that would always jump off the sprocket if you tried to move it when it was iced up. Ten minutes to put the chain back once you finally got up in there...

Great idea about using your phones gps abilities. You could probably use it without wifi too. Just download the maps you need to your phone and the gps does not need wifi to work, however , with wifi it may be more accurate. Realize that all gps on phones are not equal, depending on how many satellites your phone will compare determines your accuracy. When I use to travel all over the world as an airline pilot I would use a global mapping app, such as cities to go, and use the phone without wifi or cell data to not get lost in the big cities of the world, Paris, London, Beijing, Hong Kong, etc.

Well the boat runs in Beglium, which ist jaust near my home. Anyhow I would like to write to you today, as I had nearly the same idea as you had with the monitor. BUT I didn't like the need to touch the small mobile surface for settings or Apps to open. After searching and trying a lot I found a solution that does it all-in-one!!! It is the "V7 L156TCH-1G 15.6" USB-C Portable Touch Screen Monitor". It has all the features you told us about PLUS the possibility to touch the large screen to use all mobile functions. So it is a true display mirror of my mobile. and that ist really the best I ever saw as solution. Ed, your wifi on the boat can be solved by T-Mobile. Ask about their 100gb data plan for $50 monthly. It is 5G and they will sell you a 5G mifi (Inseego) for 50% off. You’ll have great service anywhere you can get T-Mobile service.

Awesome idea, however, the phone needs to have service to run the app, current?
@tryingnottosink91073 жыл бұрын
No need. The maps are downloaded to the phone and GPS does not require service.

100 dollars or so, you can get a brand new Amazon fire hd... ten minutes later have it hacked to android format. Easy KZfaq search, granted not your 15" screen but still nice, could always beam the screen to a larger tv.

Can you.get stainless steel chains and save all the rust problem
@tryingnottosink91073 жыл бұрын
The chains are stainless. It was the mounting plates and bolts that rusted.

Check also BBN Marine OS for raspberry pi4. Many free and opensource boat software packages preinstalled and preconfigured.

Why is this the wrong video?
@crazypeoplearoundtheworld3042 ай бұрын
I saw you a few years ago, and watched some of your early videos. I don't know if it's because you were a politician before or something else, but you did then and still currently give off strong creep vibes. I hope you never end up in a slip next to me. I've never yet been wrong about these feelings. I'd be curious how estranged you are from your family. Almost be willing to bet they are embarrassed to be related to you.

Only thing I see is your old phone don’t you have to have that phone active on an account. I’m thinking about the same type of thing I would like 2 chart plotter screens.
@tryingnottosink91072 жыл бұрын
The phone does not have to be active. I just hook it up to wifi if I need to download something.

Hi Ed, Love your videos. I do have to wonder why a guy who owns a 65 foot Hatteras, is not using real marine electronics. iPads and cheap screens from Amazon attached to an old phone may work on a sunny day are not the best solution for a boat. There is a reason why quality MFDs from the major bands cost so much more. They work always, in all weather. Cutting cost on electronics seems penny wise and pound foolish. I presume you carry full paper charts as a back up to your rube Goldberg set up.
@tryingnottosink91073 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind, I still have two Furunos on the boat. They work fine. One reason I can get away with tablets is that my flybridge is enclosed. I never have a problem with weather or sunlight. I do have paper charts onboard, but I am almost never out of sight of land, so I do not worry too much. And, I like the redundancy. I currently have 3 tablets, 2 smart phones, and two Furunos on board. All are capable of navigation, sonar and AIS. The Furunos handle the radar. And, I am cheap. Still, you might see me switch over some day. I have been offered steep discounts from a major brand to install their system and do a video about it.

Don't you just hate "mystery parts"? Is it a makeshift spacer, because there was play in the capstan? was it supposed to go up inside the capstan (not likely, I think)? Can you get a schematic for that windlass? www.galleymaid.com/galley-maid-windlass.html They might sill have one.

I have a parts drawling. I think it was supposed to be on the shaft below the wildcat but who knows. Once I get the whole thing apart I might be able to figure it out.

1 problem you didn't address is that your phone needs to be charging too.. if it can't be charged wireless you will need to disconnect the screen to charge the phone..

No. The phone sits on a wireless charger and is continuously charged.
