Hi Chuck, Just wanted to drop you a note that using this video as a guide, I built a 20M Moxon of my own (and your rotor as well). Put it up for the first time today at about 12 feet and when I hooked my radio up, I thought something was wrong. My noise dropped to about an S1 or S2 (normally an S5). I thought I screwed something up. Spun the antenna east and scanned 20 meters, the first station I heard almost blew me out of my chair (Spain which I have never heard stations from on my EFHW before). I can't wait to get this up to 30 feet and tuned to transmit (SWR about 2.3 at 14.300, but I can get it lower). Thanks so much for this video, its helped me tremendously. 73

Thanks for the sharing your design and getting it documented Chuck. This antenna is on my list of builds! I had to laugh hearing the dog bark and reading seven takes (been there) ... the hazards of being a KZfaqr! LOL. 73.

Ha! The looks at the end over the dog barking are priceless! The antenna looks pretty interesting. I think I'd have to use a trailer hitch install on my Kia Nero. But, I'm easily confused, and it looks a little involved to set up. LoL Right now, my POTA set up is a 20 or 40 meter hamstick on a tri-mag mount on the roof of the Nero. It's a nice quick and easy setup. I can even drive with it. I did seven counties for an SSB contest a while ago. 73

The Moxon is a great portable antenna with gain. It can be made with multiple but a little harder maybe than a Hexbeam. You can also build them with more elements 3 and 4 aren't too bad especially for 10m. Thanks for the comment, I don't remember the ending lol.

Great demo. Re adding another band to it, the reports I've read mostly said that at least one band should be skipped if multi-banding a Moxon; e.g. build it for 20m & 15M or 12M, not 20M & 17M, (or 15M & 10M, not 15M & 12M, etc.) because otherwise they will interact. Also, some say that the elements for the two bands should not be nested, but separated vertically by a few inches, but one fellow had the feedpoint impedances turn out well by nesting the beams but moving the higher frequency band Moxon forward of center so the driven element of the higher frequerncy band antenna is closer to the director of the lower frequency band Moxon. Nesting them resulted in the higher frequency band Moxon losing about .8 dB in forward gain, but flattened the F/B ratio on that smaller Moxon above 30 dB across the entire band, increasing the front-to side ratio of the higher frequency band Moxon, as well. He also found that he could feed the 20/15M nested Moxons on 17M via a tuner with gain over a diople and more than 15dB F/B. Not bad! I built one for 20M last year with the same type of hub but am about to replace it with one built out of spare Yagi parts, as the winter here in MT wasn't too gentle on the lightweight version. Nice video. You're going to have quite a pile-up on your next pota with this. With the sunspots starting to rise I might get inspired to build one for 10 meters. It would only be a bit bigger than your 6 meter one and a small rotor would make it a lightening bolt thrower. Thanks for the inspiration. Oh. And the reaction to the dog was funny as all get to. Lol. 🐕

Hey thanks for the comment Colin, yea the bands are getting better and I will try to add 15 and 10 meter at a later date it should make for a great POTA and DX antenna. I had worked on a antenna like yours before I had seen how you worked it out. I was using a fishing line spooler off amazon and a chalk box with copper fishing line as a pull out counter poise , your setup is much cleaner and simpler! Thanks for watching.

Pat, I can measure mine when I have a chance but if you use different wire your lengths may be different but close. the calculator will get you close also.

Brent , glad you liked the video. POTA doesn't have to break the bank, once you have a antenna, radio and a mast or a tree to hang the antenna your there except for power. Look at my 2 videos on battery boxes for power, to keep price down you can use a lead acid battery especially on POTA since you will have your vehicle close or at the activation and change to a lithium later if you want. Then find a park and activate!

@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures yes the antenna and power doesn’t worry me. Just have to figure out a good portable Hf rig. Don’t think I want to haul my TS-590SG portable unless I mounted it in my truck. I might get tempted with a smaller rig sometime. I do look forward to operating at some parks in any case.

@@brentjohnson6654 , The Yaesu FT891 is about as goos as it gets for a compact portable radio with 100 watts and fairly cheap for a new radio. A lot of good choices if you want to go qrp. I take my FT991A a lot for POTA and camping it's light and has 2m/70cm also.

Before the Moxon antenna there was the ABQ 2 element beam designed by Fred Caton VK2ABQ it was square moxon antenna is based on this antenna how do i know this iknew the designer of the ABQ which was the predecessor of the moxon it worked a treat i had one up for many years worked the world not bad for a wire beam that looked like a clothes hoist it was more square than Moxon.

Yes and I took the ends out. The 7.2m ones work better becuse you don't have to use the ends.

didn't know what a moxom antenna was, this was cool. It looks a lot like a single element hexbeam. How would this differ than a hexbeam, performance etc? Why is this and hexbeams always pulled up instead of letting them arc down like an umbrella and then just lift it a little higher? This was an awesome video and a great build. Sorry about the neighbors dog. :-D

Thump, I think this and the Hex are pretty close in performance, the moxon is 2 element also just a different shape. And for portable it uses less supports. Arching it up gets you a little more height you can let it go down like a umbrella , not sure if the mast would interact or not though, some just lay it flat if you supports are strong enough. mdg ski, yes thats what i am using. I put a link above in the description of ones like I purchased 7.2m. Get your length and take the smaller joints out and save them.

You should seriously consider switching to open feed line. Yes a little more bulky but eliminating coax losses will greatly increase you 10/20w signal. Plus it make a great vid check out the Toad Harbor fb page or you tube the vid. Simple as ribbed electric fence isolators a spool of wire and sum wire ties 😉 like the moxon Ant KC3ONO

Most of the time I will have 100 watts and I can do more with a vehicle close by. But actually that was the plan eventually try some maybe 300 ohm feedline , I have made it before for a "speaker wire antenna " basically space the wire the same width of 300 ohm with wire ties and small tubing. I will check out your suggestion and see how TH did it. Thanks for watching !

@@KK6USYHamRadioAdventures stay away from those pre made ladder lines unless you have old real copper twin Tv line. Most of the pre made stuff is stainless with a dusting of copper. Use #10 or 12 solid core copper Thhn coated. You ll be surprised how much coax sucks ur signal. I usually work 160m so every W is worth it 😉 KC3ONO

I already have some lined up for a cobweb antenna I want to build and feel confident with 3/4 at the bracket reduced to 1/2 for that setup. Didn’t know if you gave it much thought since you mentioned needing a more HD version. Good video, cheers 73

@13:33 it's ruff being famous when everyone wants in on the action. I just found your channel and this antenna is exactly what I wanted to mess around with. what length are the poles? are you using all the pole sections or did buy longer poles and remove the flimsy tip section?

I have the 7.2m poles from Ebay and take the lst3-5 sections out. Better to buy poles too long otherwise like you say they are too weak. Thanks for the comment and for watching! It's a great antenna.

They are 7.2 off ebay I think there is a link in the description to some like the ones I have. I don't use the ends , that's why the longer poles so they are strong enough. Thanks for watching!

You use the Moxon calculator, and then adjust likr yu would a dipole. The Moxon is usually wide banded so the calculater should get you close. Just give yourself a little extra wire incase your short.
