Too cool. In the middle of building my first CNC router. Watching KZfaq while waiting on parts delivery. I’ve watched video’s on how to wire a prob (store bought) to my arduino CNC shield. I think I’ve got that figured out. Now, after watching this video, I realize I’ve wasted $10 on a prob. Saved this one to my KZfaq library and it will be one of my first projects. Thanks and please keep making them. The more I watch the more I realize how much I need to learn. Having a blast in the process. Wish me luck.

Thank you for watching my videos and congratulations on building your CNC. I made this touch plate after pricing the store bought one and got a little sticker shock. I made this one from materials already on hand. I would say that just about anyone with a shop would have the necessary material to make this on as well as the touch plate for just the z axis.

Simply Excellent! Writing your own G-code macro instead of using a widget gives you a better understanding of how everything works. It is also important to be sure your spindle is not grounded to the machine frame and is insulated. I ended up using non-conducting washers and some heat shrink on the bolts to isolate the spindle mount and make this work.

Howdy Another great video. I'm going to try this method as I was thinking on buying one. I will try this first. Where did you get the G code to write the script? Also I couldn't help but notice that at 13:51 in the video you have a breakdown of the New Carve cost and something next to it. Were you comparing cost of 2 machines? Thanks again for doing these very informative vids.

Thank you very much. I wrote the g-code myszelf. Over the past month I have studied everything I could find and learned about g-code. I then wrote the z axis and used it with the z probe. Next, I wrote one line and tested each section, just a little bit at a time. A couple of things I learned, I forgot to add half the thickness of the bit. OOOpppppssss, that sign was not supposed to be in the video. I am considering a video on comparing the New Carve by CNC4newbie to the XCarve by Inventables.

I really enjoy watching your videos; they are so informative. I have one question that came to mind while watching the video. You mentioned that you forgot to subtract 1/2 the width of the bit in the macro. Do you have to modify the macro as you change the bit diameter? For example, going from a 1/8” end mill for one project and then to a 1/16” for another project. Thank you . Reg
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop 4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. I use the 1/8" bit the most. Once I probe the three axis it is set. I can change to any bit I need and just z and continue.

@makerdoc5702

@@PawPawsWorkShop Although if you want to start with something other than the 1/8" you would have to edit the macro presumably. In theory you could adjust this in your g-code if the system knew the loaded tool (not sure if GRBL does at this point in the job). But for instance on my Tormach you could write the gcode to use the currently loaded tool and it could do the math parametrically off the tool offset table in the milling machine. Of course on most milling machines the probe is the active part and the plate is the workpiece (which is mechanical not electrical), in which case your "tool" is always the probe which is always the same diameter.

Do you have any knowledge regarding compatibility of a spring loaded z-axis touch plate that can be used on the Xcarve? I am not sure if you can use for example the mach3 touch plate (spring loaded) on the xcarve cnc machine? It actually sucks with the provided brass touch plate from inventables due to damaging the sensitive 15° V-bits tip during the z-axis zero process.
@PawPawsWorkShop
@PawPawsWorkShop Жыл бұрын
I have not experience with Mach 3 or the spring loaded touch plate. If you are damaging the bit you might try doing the z manually with paper

Well nice ,but always clamp that alligator clip to the tool not to the Collet nut , because it is painted, that can block current flow and you may have problems....

Great video. I was totally cringing when you started the probing sequence and you can hear some creaking and the router tilted slight, I was thinking OMG your Z-axis guide rails had detached from the mounting plate, but then realized that creaking was your chair and the camera was tilting ever so slowly... It's like watching 5-axis probing for the first time...

Outstanding craftsmanship the aluminum covered MDF touch pad is beautiful. When you were using the edge of the MDF as a break I was wondering how are you going reference X and Y axis then I saw you place it on the edge of you’re stock. Then in the G code offset .500 for X and Y and then .270 for Z. I am really liking the idea of having a CNC machine. Thank you for another wonderful video. 😁🛫

Thank you very much. Don't forget to add the .5" and half the thickness of the bit which is .625". I hope that you will consider at some point of getting a CNC. It has really changed my shop and the types of projects that I can do. It doesn't have to break the bank.

Yes, you have to go into the advanced setting and change the plate thickness or you can just use UGS and zero the machine, then start easel and run your project. When going through the Easel checklist select manual and the select x,y 0 and continue. Carve as normal

all newbie need remember, NOT use router to spindle, worst option what have, less torque and noisy lot. bearing not live long, not has plan used cnc machine, worst bearings. same cost buy REAL cnc spindle etc, 800W air cooled ER 16 spindle has more torque than 1900W router, and lot lot lot silent use. real spindle ER16 cost 100-120$ only whit power supply and all collects. same about or cheape than worst router cost.
