Part 0 of a series in which I guide you through the overall process of creating a 3D virtual avatar starting from nothing for use in VRM applications and VRChat, using Blender and Unity. First we go over the pros and cons of Live2D vs. 3D programs like Blender or VRoid, and give some general warnings before diving in.

How I became an MMD modeler, THAT.... And the difficult to keep track of from model style to model style rules that EVERY OTHER MODELER slaps onto their models. 🙄 Got sick of it, decided to gain the ability to make my own rules. 🤷😁

If you have a pretty simple character design, using the newer versions of Vroid (which is free) is actually super easy and takes a lot of the work out of making a 3D model. I took maybe a day or two to make a model in old Vroid, didn't like how it looked, but then when new Vroid came out I tried again (started brand new but re-used some of the textures I made previously, like the clothes) and in 1 day I had a model I loved and that worked immediately as a Vtuber model in Vseeface without any extra work! My character isn't too complicated though, all I want to do now is animate the animal ear accessory to move with expressions if I can, which is why I'm here..
@Ayxiachan
@Ayxiachan 2 жыл бұрын
The new vroid is amazing! The most recent update with importing and exporting custom items is going to be so so useful too (getting the parameters right was always annoying!). It will be a game changer for me when it includes more body shape adjustments. I can't make things like legs and stomachs curvy enough right now imo. But it has reignited an urge in my to abandon my facecam content creation for vtubing haha

One of the first things I tell new modelers: Your first model is going to be absolute TRASH the sooner you accept that the better off you'll be and the sooner you can focus on using it as a bench mark for making your next model better. Do something that will take few to no physics to require to function. (You don't need to deal with that on top of everything else.) And lastly, focus on your rigging ability over everything else. If you have a trash model but your rigging is beautiful, in my experience people don't tend to care about such technicalities due to modeling and texturing skills are kinda impossible to not improve over time. 🤷😜

Another con to 3d is, that realtime rendering requires a certain pc performance, which can result in bad 3d game performance when done both. This can be the case if you have a bad gpu or the game you play is badly optimized (eg.Apex Legends)

Out of all the bullshit I've looked through for getting an idea of how to do this shit this video is probably the one to actually catch my attention. It covers some basic info in the introductory shit. Even covers the pros and cons of 2D and 3D stuff. Forewarns about the time consumption and openly points out their own mistakes with shit that are seen IN THE VIDEO as well. Great job and I'll most likely continue watching through this series because of these things.

I think I can afford to commission a 3D model but as an artist myself, I want it to look as close as humanly possible to my reference sheets and add my own touches, so I decided to make it myself. So far I got nearly the base model done after 2 months, granted, I have a full time job and some playtime. Even though this is my first time using Blender at all I am very thankful for the tutorials I found, I am genuinely surprised I am still at it at this point. I was gonna do the donut thing first but I got too ambitious and impatient, but still committed to take my time on it despite that. A long journey for sure, adding texture paint is next which I am going to enjoy the most for sure, I love coloring! Ya'll got this, I find it fascinating how I was looking at minecraft graphics for tens of hours start taking shape and bringing my character to life. This all started when someone told me I can't just jump in to it and should take it easy by retouching pre-made models, my motivation is from defiance lol

as someone already comfortable with blender and trying to weigh my options, I think Cubism 2d seems really time consuming to learn. If you already have the basics of blender - sculpt, retopo, texture... it seems like you're golden. The part that's always messing me up is how to export and getting everything right when leaving blender. there doesn't seem to be any simple solution, that's the point in the pipeline where I keep getting stuck.

I know! Since I suck at drawing I'll make a full 3D model in Blender, take a screen shot of it from the front, print out the image and just trace over it with my drawing tablet! That way I don't have to spend years developing my drawing skills to draw a 2D model from scratch and can essentially have both a 2D and 3D model to work with depending on the scenario! Of course I would have to rig both models if I wanted to use both but that's fine. I can learn rigging.
