Part 1 of a series in which I guide you through the overall process of creating a 3D virtual avatar starting from nothing for use in VRM applications and VRChat, using Blender and Unity. Here we go over character design, along with the proper way to create reference images to model over.

Maybe try using a character creator or just a rough sketch as a reference and then hire somebody to draw the rest?

@@Disheartthorn Where would you say your struggle with clothing lean towards? For me it might be my indecisiveness leading to a lack of action. Even though I know of a few outfit choices I enjoy I still don't go about finding a middle ground among them nor designing a look/feel for each and seeing which I like best once layed out.

I can't draw a straight line to save my life, so I just found a couple characters with similar shapes of all the bodyparts to make a weird frankenstein's monster of t-posing fragments to make my reference.

made a "V-tuber-ish" thing last year without knowing about what V-tubers are or the entire scene, planing to make it a more common thing arround halloween for my demon to just show up and decided to go the Vtuber rought, unlike the "literally animating any movement myself" route wich took hours for just one 10 min video xD love your style so far in these tutorials! speech pattern/voice and character wise :)

I have created a pixel art based avatar, and individually made each part, would this program work well with that or would it look a little off because of the warping techniques? Or is there a animation option where I can switch the sprite to have open/half-open/ closed mouth for example.

Sorry for the random question, but does anybody know what size the image should be? I have a really blurry memory of watching a bit of this series a year back or so and I remember having to eventually import a reference imagine into whatever software you plan on using (blender in my case).. aaaand I have no idea what a reasonable image size is.
