This emergency filter is something you can build in a survival situation if you don't have anything else. Since this filter is not made out of activated charcoal it is only good for filtering out sediments. It won't filter out Giardia or any sort of bacteria and viruses. Only boiling makes your water safe to drink.

I'm amazed that many people who reply seemed to not have listened to what Lilly said. This is a SURVIVAL situation being demonstrated and Lilly clearly stated that boiling is best and that this filter she constructed is "better than nothing". So I suggest that if one does not want to get caught in a similar situation always be sure you have your personal Lifestraw Filter with you.

I agree with you @ 6:17...The charcoal is great for removing much of the bad smell from the water as well. Another trick we do is after filtering & boiling the water, is add some crushed pine needles in your boiled water ..the pine needles is not only vit c , but the oils have an affect on micro organisms. You can do what many Water Treatment plants do, (UVGI) just by leave your water to sit out in the sun , using the Uv rays as a disinfection to kill microbes as well. Good Vid ..Cheers ;-))
@tvkiii
@tvkiii 9 жыл бұрын
That's true, and a good point. However, if the sun she no shine...she don't help much. Water plants use charcoal in times of bad taste and odor. As when the water is turning ove4 in the spring and fall. I'm a water plant operator for 34 years.

Sodium hypochlorite for disenfecting. Alum for coagulation. Caustic soda in liquid form for ph control. Calgon for making the water softer to help the pipes. Various polymers to assist the alum for better coagulation. A pre polymer fed at the lake near the intake to aid the coagulation. Carbon when needed. We drag bags of Copper Sulfate behind boats in the spring and fall when the lake turns over to assist with algae control. Fluoride that was cut by the state of North Carolina from 10 ppm to 5 ppm. Our filters are huge anthracite and or sand and gravel.

GOOD VIDEO ! One other trick, which provides a "quick & easy" filter in emergency situations. Simply remove your shirt, place it over a container, and slowly pour water into it. The shirt fabric will filter out large particles of sand, dirt, leaves, etc. You will still have to boil your water, to kill bacteria & amoeba. However, this method is faster than a smaller filter, if you need water right away.

Hello Lily. I really liked your water purification method. Your skills in the woods may be a little more advanced than mine. I always carried purification tablets. Sometimes i even swallowed a little grit from sandy water that I did not take time to filter properly. I figured a little grit was added minerals and fiber that my insides would thank me for. Besides, i never got sick in the Rocky Mountains.

Hi Lilly sorry if I comment this one a little late but I didn't know you 4 years ago. The bamboo is not necessary at all, you can have the same result with only the bottle. You make the filter in the top part of the bottle without the bamboo and you will be fine.

Nice and neat, you can also dig down to the water table and fill the hole with Grass and compress the grass and the water that filters to the surface is relatively clean, yours is much better , but the other will suffice if you don't happen to have a Bamboo tube or Charcoal on you.

This is a good method BUT you should avoid using the same container to both collect the dirty water and to receive the clean water because this will result in a recontamination of the water.

Also an alternative is If the bamboo was to big for the head of the bottle, you could of slightly heat the bottle head and then fit that bamboo in immediately, the heat cause the plastic to expand. And also you could boil water in bamboo, don't worry, the bamboo won't burn cause of the water.....its a win win.

Hi Lilly, Great tutorial with important stuff! Used a commercial waterfilter with ceramic/carbon filter cartridge during my last tour. Really wet weather conditions. That filter was blocked after every 500ml and the filter cartrigde need to be cleaned. Finally, I decided just to boil the dirty and polluted water from the creeks, which works fine. Now, I know a workaround how to purify before boiling ;-) ATB. Franz, bugikraxn.

Water, after you filter it, can be boiled in the plastic bottle. Actually you can boil water in a paper cup. So long as the fire stays below the water level in the container IT WILL NOT BURN OR MELT. All the heat from the fire is directed into water and will not harm the container. Test it out. Fill a paper or plastic cup with water and set in or on hot coals or grill. It works.

One thing that you could do to boil that water in that plastic bottle is to use really hot rocks, and just put them into the bottle. You might ruin the bottle if you're not careful, but it's an option.

hi ~ you could substitute the bamboo for a big bit elder. you can work out the centre because its quite soft and pithy. Also some tall plants dry out, with sticks that are hollow
@vancass1326
@vancass1326 7 жыл бұрын
you should be able to use thistle, cattail, or other safe plants where it's pith removed so that it is an appropriate tube and. use it's "fluff" as a replacement for cotton and add the charcoal as described, and since cattail generally grows in marshes you have access to water.
