Biochar is a FANTASTIC way to amend your soil! Use it to increase the amount of nitrogen your plants uptake, retain moisture, and neutralize the PH. It is a game-changer on the homestead!

I have been looking for a 30 gallon barrel to make a kiln for all the branches that fall from our trees. Any recommendations on where to find one?

Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are your best bets! We bought ours for $30 each. I do recommend you buy them with the lock rings if you're trying to make a biochar kiln, so that the top properly seals the air inside. Good luck and thanks for watching!

on the top total how many holes. will the number matter. is it 16 mm holes? in the bottom how many triangles? in the bottom lid is there any holes?

We did 1/2", which is about 12.5mm. 16 mm should be fine as well though. We had about 20 holes around the top of the barrel, but it's more about getting the right amount of air flow. You may find after a few test burns that you need to drill more holes. Hope you give it a try!

Can you use a covered metal paint bucket in a barrel

That is a great idea! A scaled-down version would be a 35 gallon barrel and the covered 1 gallon metal paint bucket inside of it. Just be sure that you discard the char from the first burn, or until any residual paint is burned off the bucket. Good luck!

can the bottom holes be round instead of tringle shape?

Yes they can be round! We did triangles because they're easier to cut out.

Yeah but the AG residues need to be free of plastic so your biochar is not contaminated with dioxins, right?

What AG residues are you referring to? We are sourcing wood from trees on our property so there wouldn't be any AG residues.

Make sure that you "CHARGE" the Biochar before you use it in your garden otherwise, it will just pull the beneficial goodness out of your soil in an effort to charge itself....
