You just found the best solution to our BBQ issue! We did some pretty big work around the house that required us to destroy our garden, so we can't invest on a BBQ this year. This seems like the best option! Thank youuuu

I did it!! Charcoals grey, today I did a pack of pre marinade chilli chicken skewers. This was my first barbecue in my house. I will do it every day till I am better at it. Then I'm going to get my cast iron grate. Thanks Chef John.

Thanks to you Chef John again! I have been practising using your Brick Hibachi grill, even if I wasn't cooking. I have got the heat distribution physics right by now. Today I followed a recipe how to grill sardines Portuguese style ( with the heads on). I want to thank you from the depths of my heart for making this video. I have enjoyed what I probably wouldn't have enjoyed with an expensive kettle charcoal grill costing in excess of £200.00. Thank you once again.

If you want it to be more than "temporary" spend the money for fire rated bricks. They will hold up. General bricks will crack, flake, and eventually fall apart from the heating and cooling. Use general bricks to make it waist high, then use fire bricks to make the BBQ pit.
@rostharan10 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! so informative, I'll be doing a bit more research and do that.

Ash from charcoals and from hardwood ash, are a good source of potassium (potash) for your plants (about 3% P). As a very alkaline material, ash can also balance your soil pH if its becoming more acidic. You can also use charcoal / hardwood ash as a soap-making ingredient, or even as a basic soap on its own with water. :)

Not too long ago (a couple of weeks ago), I cleared out my backyard from months of neglect and overgrown weeds. Now, I have space to try and make my own brick grill! Thanks for the inspiration, Chef John! (I admit though that I really would want to put in an outdoor, wood-fired brick oven for making authentic Neapolitan pizzas someday.) Btw, I don't think ash from burning a store-bought brand of charcoal is safe/ideal for your soil (much less for whatever you have growing there), especially when you consider that they can be chock-full of crazy chemicals/synthetic catalysts. However, if it's ash from burning "natural wood charcoal", then yeah, it should be okay.

Thanks chef John! I heat my house with a wood burning stove and have often thought it would be great to simply scoop out some glowing embers for a quick grilling. However I never attempted this because my thinking was to place the embers in my Weber kettle grill which I knew was too big to make the plan efficient. I could only scoop out so many embers and run them outside while still keeping the fire roaring inside. Now seeing this video I know my instant wood fired grill can become a reality very easily! I have an old pot to carry the hot embers, an old grill grate, and old bricks so I can be in business in 5 minutes. I cant believe I did not think of this myself, but then again I did think to watch your video, so I'm not totally stupid after all.

Hi Chef John. This is such a great idea. One thing I'd like to point out about the ashes. If you use commercial charcoal briquettes, the ashes are BAD for soil because there are additives in the charcoal that are not good for plants. However, natural wood charcoal is a different story. The ashes from natural wood charcoal is great!
