Calcium carbonate for human consumption is a large molecule which is not absorbable by plants. Also if you have a good PH in your soil it will raise that value - you don’t want that. Calcium for plants is readily available as calcium sulfate. You’ll have negative effects on plants using human vitamin D and calcium and zero affect from using it as a foliar spray. If you want your plants to get calcium use, Gypsum (calcium sulfate). If you want to raise PH, add calcium carbonate to your soil by using garden lime; garden lime is for raising the PH of the soil and is not an effective way of making calcium available to your plants. The proper way to supplement calcium is by adding gypsum (calcium sulfate) or using a liquid supplement such as, Cal-Mag, or similar brand. When using liquid supplements one must adjust the PH of the liquid in order to get optimal availability of the nutrients. Do not do what this person is suggesting.

That's what i was thinkung. We can barely use ca carbonate and it seems shes more interested how much water than concentration rstio of mg/ ml??? Even with fine food processing the CA needs to be broken down to be bioavailable. Ive been experimenting with pure calcium citrate which im sure will raise the ph but adding a little vitamin c to make sure it does. Put in soil with mag sulfate. Didn't want to risk burning leaves. But going to try folier next and adding maybe some more mag sulfate and maybe msm

@@91210paige calcium carbonate is a large molecule which is not soluble to plant roots and garden lime is calcium carbonate (Tums). You waste your time and money and you replied without reading. Calcium carbonate is only useful to raise soil PH. Five years later your plants might consume some.

@arlarl5122 2 жыл бұрын
@@91210paige want to know why Tums reduces stomach acidity? Because it’s very basic and raises the PH of stomach fluid thus neutralizing the acid. And that’s all it’s good for. And in case you are unaware: tomatoes flourish in acidic soil and lime is not conducive to an acidic environment. Blossom end rot is caused by alkaline conditions which make calcium unavailable - AKA too much lime in the soil.
@DrCorvid

I react wood ashes with vinegar to neutralize the pH. The process also yields acetate minerals, arguably among the best forms of mineral supplementation for foliar feeding. Calcium is about 50% of wood ashes, so you can get lots of calcium in the foliar feed. This kind of feeding is also pretty much germ-free; you can get it on you or even eat it on your food without worrying about an e-coli infection.

Use lime, just a bit around the plant once a week, raises Ph, amazing results....got this tip from a jersey Farmer back in 1980....he grew tomatoes from 1946-1986. Also add sand to your soil, look up Freehold loam, that is the perfect soil for tomatoes. good luck !

@TCSwizz2
@TCSwizz2 6 жыл бұрын
Calcium is calcium no matter how you look at it but the calcium compound found in human supplements is different than what your plants need and is really unusable as for as plant absorption goes. You should also be adding any type of calcium amendments to your soil and not the leaves as plants don’t absorb calcium through their leaves. Forget any ideas you may have of using human calcium supplements and forget about making any kind of foliar spray. Stick to all natural sources of calcium such as bone meal (which is also good source of phosphorus), eggshells, seaweed or garden lime to name a few and be sure to either add it directly to the soil the year BEFORE you plant or by making a liquid solution and using it to water your soil once per month before fruit set and no more than once per week after fruit sets. Use the soil amendment method if you want to “set it and forget it” or the liquid method if you like to frequently mix up a solution to water your soil with. I prefer to set it and forget it.

Its for preventing blossom end rot. Calcium carbonate is not immediately bioavailable to plants and has to be broken down before being taken up by plants, accordingly not the best choice for foliar spray. Try using calcium nitrate as a foliar spray For potted plants, try using expired Tums as Calcium Cabonate instead that you have crushed which will break down and help the plant. Cheaper than gel caps!

Outa ThisWorld - I wasn't at all convinced by this video for many reasons. First she mis-pronounced "tomatoes" at the beginning and didn't even bother to edit it out. Secondly the dosage she suggests seems to have just been made up randomly by her and thirdly from what I've heard calcium should be given as a dressing not as a foliar spray. She calls her trowel a "little shovel." Also egg shells just don't work. Thanks for _your_ advice!

Not only is calcium carbonate useless to plants as it is not water soluble, calcium is a non-mobile micronutrient. That means if you spray it on the leaves it's going to stay in the leaves. If you need to add calcium, dissolve some eggshells in vinegar for 48hrs, ensure the vinegar has dissolved all the shells it can, then add this at a ratio of 1/2tsp per gallon of water. Water the mixture in normally. You've created calcium acetate by reacting acetic acid with calcium carbonate.

I am trying "Hi Yield" calcium nitrate ( i panicked! ) which my 'trusted' garden center carries for less than Walmart, etc. I guess I did something right, because 72 hrs. later...no blossom end rot at this point. This my 2nd amateur year of container gardening. Years ago (approx. 10) I gardened, scratch that 'farmed' a 1/2 block 'garden for my great-aunt(RIP) and she had me eventually tending 30 tomatoes, 5 X 10 okra, white asparagus, blackberries, 3 apple trees, greens (various), potatoes (various), onions(various), horseradish, radishes, peppers, beans ( pole, bush, crowder peas, purple hull peas-which we traveled 80 miles into Oklahoma to get "...the ones she had to have..." and I'm getting tired just trying to remember all including flowers. This was "in-town" of 10,000 population and my 'pay' was locals stopping by to take pictures and trying to buy our producst at 'harvest', but we just shared and I learned from my 80+ years from auntie, 'how-to-garden'. All that said, container gardening is truly a 'learning experience'. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Why buy expensive human grade supplements when the garden centers have magnesium and calcium in bulk for a tenth of the price . Dont spray in the morning unless its very very early , its better to do it at night /evening so the nutrients get the time to get absorbed before the water evaporates in the morning sun, misting plants with sun out can/will burn them.

Well, for me, that was a waste of money. I tried cutting the gel-caps open and squirting the inside into warm (almost boiling) water and it never dissolved or broke down. It became an almost clay like blob. I also tried just dropping a couple in a cup of cold water to sit for 24 hours and, again, the casing broke apart but the inside turned into a clay like substance. I verified that my calcium capsules are "gelcaps", but this was a fail. I have now ordered something that is a ready-to-use spray that says it will help blossom rot. As a footnote - this video is a few years old, so I will assume the manufacturer has changed the formula for the inside gel.

Well, personally i simply apply rabbit urine. It's rich in nitrogen and calcium. So powerful is rabbit urine that you need to dilute with water using a ratio of 1:5, otherwise you will scotch the plants. Rabbit urine is also good because its a natural way of fertilizing your plants, an excellent option for organic farming enthusiasts. As it is 100% natural, there is no waiting people from day of application to first harvest date - you can even harvest soon after applying it. Another advantage of rabbit urine is that it also works as an insecticide. The strong smell that it produces while applying it and its sour and burning sensation kills garden pests such as aphids.
