In this new series titled Sustainable Home, we will take you through a series of videos on how to build a sustainable home. At Aanandaa, we are building an innovative and creative home, which is as sustainable as possible. We have explored several construction technologies and designs to ensure we have the most natural, resilient and energy efficient home.
In this video, Manisha, Jitesh and Narayanji take you through an overview of how to make a Catalan Vault/ Catalan Dome, its benefits and aesthetics. Drone footage of the dome construction gives you an aerial view of the dome, bringing to life the process.
The Rohtak Domes team led by Naranyaji is a talented crew that can built vaults, domes and jack arches without any steel or shuttering. The domes are made only with brick and cement, and stay in place because of the angle they are placed at. The roof is quite magical and miraculous in its structure and design.
Sustainable architecture at Aanandaa is directed by Ar. Jitesh Malik from Studio Aureole. The integral design practice at their studio combines a commitment to environmental sensitivity with a contemporary design language and a pedagogical process. At Aananda, Jitesh creatively contextualised a diverse range of sustainable practices to collaboratively work towards an aesthetically enriching experience.
Studio Aureole team: Prabhjot, Richa, Mandav, Harshita and Tanvi
Collaborators/Experts: Lallan, Ashumi, Malvika (Mlime), Narayanji 9896485304 (Rohtak Domes)
To know more about Studio Aureole see www.studioaureole.com or email art.jitesh@gmail.com
In this episode, we take you through Rammed Earth Construction. Our entire home is made of Rammed Earth, and in this episode, Manisha and JItesh will explain the step by step process of making a rammed earth wall.

Egyptian architecture Hasan Fathy describes another traditional domes in his book “ Gourna; a tale of two villages “ he used to build the roofs of the houses in his project in 1940s using ancient Egyptian methods and only using natural materials without cement. His buildings are still there and preserved.

Beautiful! just one suggestion, instead of cement use slaked lime, (When quick lime reacts with water it produces lime water or slaked lime. CaO + H2O → Ca(OH)2 The more you keep it dipped under water like 15 to 30 days its bonding properties increases many fold and old Fort walls and roofs are made this way, still standing today best example of test of time. And its more eco/environmental friendly Thanks

You are absolutely right. And we have used slated lime in most of the construction. We have a lime tank built on site. However, the Rohtak domes artisans do not work with Lime because it takes time to set.

Most rammed earth walls have a concrete "cap". It serves the same purpose as the top plate on a stick frame structure, and it gives you an easy way to install the lag bolts that will hold the roof on, you just insert them into the wet concrete and try to make sure that they're standing up straight.

@@pragneshparekh7652 thanks. To clarify - I had retired some three years back and am researching independently about climate change. It is a major and real problem, and yes, we are the reason. I have an organic farm. Is it healthy and better? Yes. Is it sustainable? No. Most of the things we do everyday, all of us, have negative impact. I am no judge because I am part of the problem. But, we are the solutions too. I will not appreciate my fault when I know it is wrong. I watch Aanandaa videos around 45 to 60 minutes everyday as I learn from them and trying to shift my organic farm into a permaculture farm. I will still watch their videos. I will visit them (if they allow after my anger :D) and learn more on how they do thousands of things better than me and where I can do things differently. My concern is tagging a concrete roof to the topic of sustainable housing because it is not. Absolutely not. Cement is a read bad thing. If one has to use (I have it in my place) I would not call it sustainable. One can be emotional about wars, politics, movies, so can one be about climate change. I would want all to be emotional about climate change because it is a bigger problem than anything else. That is why my outburst. I am not usually like this, sorry. And to add, sustainable building materials are present everywhere, older than current ones, cheaper too, NOT TOUGH TO MAKE. Probably, much easier than making the actual "choice" of building using natural materials. We can switch 100% not in much time. Maybe our current ways of life make it tough to make that choice. I still will look up to them for number of other things. 90% of my watched history is theirs. :D

I understand that sometimes you have to use it and sometimes we cannot avoid, but in that case, please do not promote it as 'sustainable'. @@farmaanandaa sorry, there are far better and sustainable alternates to roofing than cement. I understand, it is a journey but a few factors are a big no. CEMENT SHALL NEVER BE TERMED SUSTAINABLE, THIS IS MY PROBLEM. AND IT IS AN EMOTIONAL ISSUE FOR ME. Cement is a big driver to climate change, like a big big one. Calling it sustainable can never be and shall not be justified. I know you use it sometimes when you do not find alternate. I understand that. But, please understand my point. This was a roofing structure by choice and calling it sustainable is my only problem. In terms of longevity as well, natural structures built before cement still stand tall across the world. Cement has a limited lifespan.

10 tons doesn't seem realistic. Does someone know the load a dome that size can bear?
