This is easily the most beginner friendly breakdown of Roll20 that I've seen so far! Pleeeaaase do the version from a DM's perspective. Both campaigns that I'm in have started using Roll20 while we play remotely, but we just use our D&D Beyond character sheets that are open in another tab. It's already made and it's really simple to just toggle over. But one for the DMs who are new to using Roll20 that's as accessible as this one was would be such a huge help!

You can actually use a chrome extension called "Beyond20" which links your DnD Beyond character sheet to Roll20. You could directly roll on your attacks on DnD Beyond that way.

@@ashutoshmohapatra7320 I know for sure some of us won't want to download something when we can just move to the very next tab, hahaha. If we planned on staying a digital campaign, maybe, but I think we'd all rather just move to the next tab to use the layout we're most familiar with for now. But that's cool that that exists! Also, all of us use real dice. Rolling digital dice is way less fun and really takes away from the experience for us.

Love the vid, but I have to say charactermancer can be very helpful, despite its flaws, here's an example: youre making a half-orc barbarian, simply go to the charactermancer, pick halforc, then pick barbarian. it'll automatically present you with the race features anf skill profeciency choices of the class (choosing from a drop down box). On the equipment tab if you choose to start with class starting equipment it also gives you the choices. If the other tabs are unnecessary after that, simply finish using the charactermancer, and whatever you have input before is already in the sheet. -Rage? check -Battle axe & javelins? Check -Relentless endurance? Check -Brutal Critical? Check -Halforc profeciency with intimidation? Check -any other profeciencies you chose? Check each with their description (if applies) and in the correct place, hell even the starting pack of your choice and the equipment within it. Sure it isn't amazing without buying more content but it saves you from manually inputting the menial basic stuff.

This is going to help so many people :D You the best! As a preference, I still use the charactermancer before editing manually (to save time + effort). Especially if creating a caster. you can drag stuff from the compendium onto a character sheet. so search for searing ray -> drag -> it'll auto-populate the spell (or the item, proficiency, etc). This is great cause it'll also populate attacks / ac+initiative calculations, which helps for new players.

If you do own all the content character mancer is really nice. I use it as a DM to keep my infrequent PCs sheets leveled. It's also really nice if you want to whip up a NPC with PC levels, or if you want to experiment with optimization and leveling through different builds. That and the drag and drop MM is really what keeps me on roll20 as a DM. Dynamic lighting is neat too, and adds a lot to dungeon exploration. You can also drag and drag every mundane item, which is really nice for weapons and armor. I think all the magic items outside of XGE are in there too.

When you are putting an attack cantrip like Fire Bolt on your sheet, be sure to change the level progression under the attack section of the spell to be “Cantrip Dice”. That way it will auto roll multiple damage dice when you reach the appropriate level. Use “cantrip beam”for eldritch blast only.

If anyone is shopping for different virtual tabletops, Roll20 is, I think, pretty easily the best free option and probably the best option if you are using modules. That said, if you're running a homebrew campaign of any kind and don't mind throwing down a one-time $50, Foundry is vastly better and I absolutely recommend it.

Me and my friends use dnd beyond and owlbear rodeo for the maps. If we found this out earlier we could have used this. Although 2 of the players only uses smartphones, I don't know how mobile phone friendly roll 20 is compared to dnd beyond. And we managed to finish a full campaign with two of us only using phones. In our next campaign we pooled in some cash so our dm can unlock races\subclasses\feats and share the content among the party.

Armour class is not actually calculated manually, it's calculated automatically based on your dex if you have no armour, and if you use items from the compendium which give you armour class then it will incorporate that. There are options in the options tab for changing how all of this works so that you can have automatic tracking of Unarmored Defense or similar things.

Hints: - For macros that use your char stats, hover over the field of the stat to get the name of the modifier (for example, hover the mouse pointer over the AC number and a small popup with @{ac} will appear, wich you can use instead of a number with a macro), you do need to have the token of the character on the field and have it selected - You can drag stuff from the feature list (third tab above chat) to the sheet to add it - You can make sheets for NPCs and companions, check the settings to select the proper settings

Heres a little trick - advanced but not pro - that I use as a DM. If you make a character sheet and set it so that only you can see it, but add multiple players to give them editing privileges. What happens is that no one (except you) can do things on the sheet, BUT all of the players listed on it can still receive Whispers (used by putting in a '/w' command and typing in the name of the sheet) and send whispers to the sheet. Why would you do this? Well, you can name the sheet something like "Common" or "Elven" or something else like that, and then give everyone who can speak that language editing privileges. Now instead of having to ask every time someone says something in another language "ok so who speaks Abyssal?" and then individually whispering each player who confirms and hoping that no one missed it, you can just '/w Abyssal' and everyone relevant gets the message, and you can just say 'the NPC says something in a guttural language' for everyone. It takes a bit of time to set up, and you have to make sure to give yourself editing privileges too so that way when players whisper in it to have conversations with each other or NPCs in their other languages you can actually see it. But it's really fun and makes it easier for people to engage with having a ton of languages, or very specific and rare ones! (I died inside when one of my players announced they were taking Flail Snail as a language.)
