Here is a video explaining close-up magic mats and explaining how you can go about making your own in order to save a bunch of money! Regular close-up magic mats cost anywhere from 30 dollars and up.
Feel free to post a video response of a close-up mat you made, whether you made it the same way I did or your own way. We'd all love to see different ways and ideas of going about making one!
Enjoy...

I improvised becuase I don't have a DIY store anywhere near me, so I simply put a cutting board into an old plain pillow case and sealed it off, and it works amazingly :]

i have some sponge based carpet under my table, which is covered with a green paterned base. For a mat, you can just by a sheet of neoprene, it is very grippy so won't slip on most surfaces and cards fan realy well over it, also it rolls up so it's easy to carry

@LCer Excellent advice. I actually thought of that, but was in a rush to get out of the store. I did however just put an extra piece of felt underneath of it, for that very reason, which seems to work well. I am going to out today to invest in a new close-up mat, probably a 14" X 18" Trevor Duffy if they have them in stock!

Mine is high quality solid wood, spray glued a thin but dense piece of foam to it, covered the foam in the best velvet I could find, stapled it down, and glued a high quality piece of felt to the bottom. Corners were rounded on the wood before all that was done. I've made a few, and sold some. My favorite is 12"-24"

@iloveshadowmaster felt is a type of material usually used in card tables and for a good reason...it is usually just perfect. A good example why smooth surfaces are bad for table tricks or poker is because it is much harder to pick up the cards (especially that last card)

@booyahshaka91 Thanks for the comment! That's a pretty good price. How big is it and how much did it cost? I am going to pick up another "real" close-up mat, but it's prob gunna run me 30 bucks because I buy it from my local magic shop!

as he said, velvet, or other fabrics like that. Personally, I recomend you just play around. I have one made out of silk! Works like a dream.

@hrtuvchrome I didn't put rubber on the bottom because I couldn't find it at the time! My old close-up mat, one I bought from the magic shop a long time ago is flexible and has a non-slip bottom, which is awesome. However, this design actually doesn't slide at all because it is much heavier than a regular mat, so it's not that much of a problem in this case. Thank for commenting and for the suggestions! :-)

Thank you for the video! But, how it ould be, if you put first some sponge under the black, so you can grab the cards more easily?

I think of this too and I made mine before actually imagining there was someone who could become with my idea too, I glued felt to a checkerboard I had (: but since I thought that was kind of a bad looking mat I bought one 1 week after I made my own

"More sleeker" ?? Wood is "from a tree" ?? Felt came "in a bag" ?? Amazing. Thanks for stretching this to almost seven minutes, instead of just saying "felt glued to plywood".

this is pointless and not very good as it doesn't look good and it doesn't work making it yourself is fine but don't make it out of bad materials and you need padding that is the whole point of a mat so it makes it easier to pick up cards and to keep them clean
