In this one, I am prepping for the Renaissance festival by making a slew of conch and shell horns! the size and type of shell used will make the sound vary quite a bit, and I thought it would be interesting to demonstrate just how different each shell can sound! I hope you enjoy and will make sure to have another one out soon!

Out of all the videos on making conchshell horns, you are the only one who shows what the hole is supposed to look like. Thank you! My son & I were able to make me a horn.

I grew up on the East Coast of VA, VA Beach, VA. we always had conchs around our home, typically conchs are not found in VA as I know it. Ours came from places farther south. Today I live in West Texas on a recent visit back East we brought back about 4 or 5 conchs. I am going to challenge one of the conchs to be my Donor as a musical instrument to annoy my neighbors that have no clue to the wonderful sound from a Conch! Thank you for sharing your talent. 😁🛫

I have some conch shells in my room- and the temptation is palpable... Also anything handmade from shell or otherwise is very renaissance- if you imagine you are a traveler near the sea

Conch shells are always blown in the morning and evening in every place in India, it's a sacred sound in Hinduism.

In Hawaii they are blown at sunset. Also a sacred sound.

If you are making Shell pendants, you might enjoy checking out my video on "making rings from fragile shells" as the process definitely applies to pendants as well, and can really open up some opportunities for some beautiful jewelry using shells that would not normally be usable! 😊

Theo, I found your video to be extremely helpful! I have a Triton shell that I dove for in the Bahamas over 40 years ago, and it never blew as well as some conchs that I used. It is irreplaceable, and I don't want to screw it up!It is over a foot long with the tip of the spiral removed, and the outer lip is as delicate as fine china. The coloring is superb, a find of a lifetime, at least for me! I think the rotary tool is the way to go, there is a lot more of the columella ( I Wikied that!) left in mine than in your horns. Thank you so much for sharing your skills! Ha, 10:20, that's a Triton right there!

I borrowed a Dremel tool and ground it down, it worked! I can get the middle note easily, but I have to work at the lower note. My lips have become flabby.

Since you're a Ren-Fair guy, you might dig the reason why the tip is suppose to be cut where it is. Historically, the reason they are cut between the third and forth spiral is because that's where you need to cut the shell to release the whole conch animal from the shell in one piece when harvesting the meat.

On the contrary, this will be very intresting video! I made a conchorn out of a shell very similar in shape and size. It is much cleaner though. I'd love to see what you do with it. Now that I have a Dremel and lots of burs and bits. I want to see the possibilities! Thanks for all these wonderful videos that you shared ! Yep! mine is just like your second one. When I made horn out of it, I didn't have Dremel. I used Hacksaw and files. Oh, I was hoping that you would carve that shell too !!

Do you not need to wear a respirator when carving shells? I thought you should. Am I wrong? Great vid and beautiful sound. Havagudun my friend.

Definitely need to always wear a respirator with shells; even more so than rocks! Don't worry though, i have mine on this one!😄 just hard to see past my hat sometimes, but you can see that i am wearing it at 7:56 👍thanks so much for watching!

Theo I cut one conch, it's extremely hard to blow. I cut another one but cut it down to far. I used the dremel diamond cut off bit. It kept getting caught in the spiral. What would you do with a whole big conch shell minus the tip?

Can the same be done with the small conch shells? Like the ones as big as your fingers?

You absolutely can do it with smaller shells! I have made several with three inch long Spider conchs, and they sound awesome; almost a whistle. I am not sure though how small you would be able to go and still maintain the sound. Great question!

@@RogueT-Rex8468 you're probably on the right track! To get the sound properly, you have to hold your lips tightly together and force air through, almost like you would for a trumpet. The smaller the shell, the tighter your lips have to be. It can take some practice but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it! I demonstrate how to at the end of the video, and it's the same concept for a smaller shell, just tighter and requiring more air. Hope that helps!

I have a horn that I found on the road. It has a thick layer of I don't know what, but someone said I could convert it to a horn that plays. I would have to grind off the ugly stuff on the outside, and then polish it to look good. It looks like the horn of a sheep? Rough!

Thanks. I'm a newbie here. Can you also do a video on how to actually create the sound with your mouth? Is there anything particular to do shaping or vibrating the lips, or voicing at all, or do you just blow it like blowing a fire? Cheers

I’d assume it’s like playing a brass instrument so if so you would have to tighten the corners of your mouth and make the center relaxed so that your lips buzz when you’re blowing into the shell. Hope that helped
