Actually, I would topstitch like she did on the front, with the seam allowances upward, so that water wouldn't pool in the seam line.....it provides a better runoff. I'm an old awning seamstress.

I live in Florida and we have a screened in Patio. You can imagine the dirt and dust that comes in as we dont have glass enclosures. The size is big enough for one chair.

What is the reason for using darts to shape the front, instead of shaping it fitting to the end panels?

Darts makes the job of patterning easier. It is just faster.

How do I know how much material I need

An outdoor furniture chair that is built to accommodate one occupant will generally require about 3 yards of a 60” wide fabric to make an outdoor furniture cover for that one chair. However, for more accurate calculations it is best to measure all sides of the chair and then roughly sketch rectangular panels (that are required for your furniture) that will nest (fit) inside a rough sketch drawing of your choice fabric’s width. Try to nest as many panels inside the rough sketch of your fabric as possible, when all panels are fit inside the width of your fabric add up the overall length of the fabric used.

Although functional, she sure made a lot of extra work for herself putting all those darts in there.. She needed to just lay a piece of material over the span, trace it out, make the side pieces add a front and back panel and sew a hem for the cord. It's nice nevertheless.
