Hair " jewelry" seems to be the latest trend and since it's so easy to make your own wire barrettes I thought I would make a tutorial so everyone can enjoy the trend inexpensively. I suggest between a 12-14 gauge wire, anything less than that may be too flimsy. You can dress up the barrettes with beads or leave them plain. I used about 2 feet of 10 gauge wire for the round barrette, 1/2 foot of 22 gauge wire and a 10mm snowflake bead for a 2.5 inch in diameter barrette. I used 1.5 foot of 10 gauge wire for the scroll barrette that was about 2.5 inches in length both barrettes have a 4 inch long stick.
If you want to learn how to make a soldered wire frame for a barrette or shawl pin here's the link : • How to Make a DIY Sold...

Hi Denise I just subscribed to your channel, this looks so fun. But since I am SO WAY NEW to this could you start with your supplies like any special hammer and is that a stainless piece that you are hammering on? Where would I get these basics?? I know silly questions but I would like to start a new HOBBY! lol like I need a new one haha! anyway I think you covered the size gauge of wires? I need a shopping list and if you have a fave place to order from vs Hob Lobby or Michael's that would be lovely! I am retired and can go into Vegas to shop but if you get your stuff online that would be even better! Thank you in advance and this is exactly what I wanted to make as I am crocheting ( mine are boho and hippie as I cannot follow a pattern to save myself, BUT I love the free form and I wanted something nice to hold up one side) so this will work perfectly! (shawl pin!!!! ) I never knew they existed until now!!!!! :) Also I sell out of a vintage store, have a booth and have made two shawls already, they are large with wooden beads and I have just found my ceramic beads I made WAY back in the day ( lololol 1968!!!) Thank you again for your great video! You explain very well to someone that is just starting out! Love it! Kat

+Kat Ritorto I can feel your excitement from here, and I completely get it. There's nothing better than finding a new hobby and I absolutely love free form, that's my preferred style too. I usually shop on line but will occasionally shop at Michaels if they have good coupons. My favorite places to buy tools and supplies are artbeads.com or beadaholique.com, I usually choose based on the best prices and they both offer percents off that you will receive alerts for if you sign up on their email list. I've made a list of my favorite tools at kit.com and provide links to Amazon so you can check out what I suggest and also the approximate prices. It's just a guide really and I suggest that you shop around to get the best prices. Here's the link. kit.com/denisemathew/getting-started-making-wire-jewelry Also I've heard that aluminum wire is good for making shawl pins(Michaels have this in a 16-18 gauge )so you might want to keep that in mind when you are looking. I used artistic wire in the tutorial but it's very stiff to work with, aluminum is much more pliable but the choice is yours. Hope this helps and thanks for all your kind words and also for subscribing, All the best in 2017, Denise

Is the wire you're using half hard or dead soft. I looked on amazon and there are so many options I was confused. Love your tutorial. Great job!!
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 6 жыл бұрын
+Jennifer Roberts for a project like this where you want the piece to be very stiff a half hard is good, aluminum wire works ok too. But for most other projects dead soft is really the best all purpose wire. Keep in mind that the harder the wire, like half hard, the less wiggle room you have for bending and shaping so it's easier to snap the wire if you over work it. I have a tutorial on wire and what each type is good for projects here if you're interested kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9Clh5ufys3ImZ8.html. Hope this helps. 😊

When you said the stick was now "wire hardened" what did you mean by that? Thanks for this tutorial.... Its beautiful!
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 8 жыл бұрын
The stick is the straight piece that goes through the circle clip part and wire hardened means that the wire is harder than it was in the beginning and will not bend easily when you're wearing the pin. I hope this helps 😊 Denise

is this wire dead soft or half hard? thanks

You can use either, dead soft needs a little more hammering to wire harden and half hard will need less hammering. Hope this helps 😊

I can't tell what kind of wire to use can you tell me? I have some that I got at a craft store and it looks like it would work it's in colors.
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 3 жыл бұрын
As long as it’s stiff and heavy enough to hold hair or a scarf it’s fine. If the wire is too flimsy it won’t keep its shape. Usually a 10-14 gauge wire is good.

@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 7 жыл бұрын
+thelmarrie I think 16 gauge will be ok if you hammer it well to wire harden it, the only thing I suggest is that aluminum wire would probably be too flimsy in 16 gauge but most other types of wire should be perfectly good. Hope this helps, 😊

For a shawl or scarf pin, is there a way to make the pin pointy or sharp enough to pierce delicate fabric?
@DeniseMathew
@DeniseMathew 7 жыл бұрын
+Jane Thomas if you use a jewelry file, or just a regular file you should be able to get a pretty good point. To make it go quicker you can also cut the tip of the wire at an angle so it's pointed then finish it with a file. Hope this helps 😊

Once you've clipped and filed the end onto a rough point, rotate it while striking it with your hammer using a lateral drawing or pushing motion that will elongate the pin, decreasing its thickness while increasong its length.
