Step by step instructions on how to make a reusable face mask with an added filter pocket and wire to shape the mask around the nose area.
Perfect for protection against the current Coronavirus!
- No paper pattern or face mask needed to make this.
You will need:
1) fabric (38cm x 19cm) + 20cm extra for binding edges (more or less).
You can use an old shirt/dress etc. if you don’t have fabric readily available.
2) elastic (any will do) around 50cm needed.
3) a piece of wire - any size from around 10cm - 17cm.
(any closed with no sharp edges will be suitable, the wire I used in this video is a “twist tie” wire from a food packaging)
*if the wire you have has raw sharp edges cover the edges with a casing, for example glue gun the ends or turn them under using a plier.
A sewing machine is needed and an iron.
(Or if you have a lot of patience you could hand sew it all!)
Let’s get sewing!
Be a kind neighbor and make one for an elderly or vulnerable person, or just be self aware and start by making yourself one!
May you all stay in the best health and let’s wear our masks and beat off this Coronavirus!

I like this type of facemask .so far it’s my favourite. You explain everything very well. I’m a novice when it comes to sewing but I could follow your instructions very easily.I would love to see how to add another layer inside though. As three layers seem to be the recommendation. Maybe an updated video ......please

Hi Brenda!! Apologies for my late reply and firstly thank you for your kind feedback on my video! I am happy it could be of assistance! Yes it’s hard to know how many layers to add with the face mask for optimum protection, but from using the face masks a lot more now (UK Covid rules now) I think any more layers would be far too hot and make it hard to breath, even with cotton fabric! But with the added option of adding a filter inside in this face mask you can add as many extra layers as you like which is kind of a happy medium :D Please do subscribe to my channel and I would love your feedback on more of my videos! I am sorry but I am so confused on the part of part 4:41 on this video, do I sew on each side of the opening or just one side? Do I sew on each side of the opening or just the right side? Help I like this tutorial and I want to do it right Thank you Nellie
@allthingsmumlifeUK
@allthingsmumlifeUK 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Apologies for my delayed reply! Ok, so to clarify the steps at 4:41: Firstly, Yes you sew on each side of the opening. The point in sewing on both sides is to keep the edges on both side securely down and in place as these edges are on the top of the face mask and need to be securely finished. If you look at minute 4:53 you will see I have sewn the top stitch on the left hand side and I am doing the same on the right side of the opening (the opposite side). And then at 5:00 I show you how it should look and both sides have been top stitched :D I hope that is clear!??? And please do let me know if you need any further clarification! Kind Regards to you, MrsHomeMakerUK

Hi Cathi! I am so sorry for my late reply! I have only just seen your comment!! You need to push the underside out of the way of the topside, you do this at the start and as you sew along, also if you have a sewing machine with a removable table/arm then take that off to help push the underside out of the way. Was that clear? I hope that helps! Kind Regards, MrsHomeMakerUK

Please don’t forget to subscribe to my channel for more content just like this!! In terms of taking 2 inches off both sides I think perhaps that was in response to a lady asking to size down the mask for a super tiny human (toddler size) but yes 2cm off each side is more accurate for a kid age size, again it all depends on the size of the head of the child so a little trial and error is needed :)) Warm Regards, MrsHomeMakerUK

Hello and apologies for my delayed reply, what type of fabric are you using, as cotton (even when doubled up should be fine). OK so my advice is when you start sewing use the 'wheel' (that moved your needle down into place) of your sewing machine to make stitches and once it is around 1cm in from the edge then continue sewing by using your sewing machine foot, sometimes some sewing machines are a little sensitive by the edge of a fabric and thus require you to start off by using the wheel and then using the sewing machine foot. I hope that was clear? let me know!! MrsHomeMakerUK
@mrsbenn1
@mrsbenn1 4 жыл бұрын
@Eunhye Lee: Your machine may require 'stitching tension' adjustment. Instructions to do so should be in your Sewing Machine manual. Hope this helps. *Tip: Sometimes even lengthening the stitch helps. Just ensure you back stitch though.

I know this is going to sound gross, but some people are using those pantey liners inside the pocket. Seems gross I know but they are unused.

Im sorry, am I truly the only one so stupid I can't figure out what the actual fresh hell is going on at 5:05 ? Has anyone actually sewn directly along w this video? What shes saying versus what shss showingas a result doesnt exist. She says to sew a straight vertical line from top to bottom...then shows an item with totally separate layer that arent sewn together at all. ?????? :(

Hi! I am sorry you are confused by the video/step.. perhaps I can clarify.. Around 5:05 this is the “top stitching” it is just a process to finish the edge and not sew all the layers completely together. Hope that helps? Sorry for my late reply! Take care wherever you are in the world 🌟

Between 4:41 and 4:45. You show, and say, with words,and your fingers, to sew straight down on folded fabric. And then you show, and point, at an item that is clearly NOT sewn with the two halves folded. wtf? You said to sew it folded but then show it sewn unfolded and a magical result that doesnot come from the actual instructions you gave.:/

I think I see where the confusion has occurred.. when I first point and show and say make sure it’s folded straight I mean to get it straight first but then you will see when I’m at the sewing machine I have it unfolded like previously when I was pointing. The idea is to flatten the fabric to rid it of creases etc. and then at the machine sew each edge that face the hole/opening separately. Hope that helped??

To put it simply I should have pointed at the edge and then opened it out and pointed at the same edge on both sides to show you where you will sew when at the machine. Apologies!
