This is a tutorial that shows how to make a crab and lobster pot. I make two different types, a parlour pot and a two entrance pot.

I don't need to know how to make a lobster pot, but I remembered as a child helping my uncle, who fished in Anglesey, make these, and since he passed I wanted to remember for a minute and this took me right back; thank you!

Thanks for this video John. I think we've forgotten a lot of our old skills and it's great (for me at least) to see that some of us keep them up. Good work bro. In Australia, we are regulated by size of mesh depending on what we are trapping. You are quite right about making smaller meshes for different sized catches. Live bait traps (poddies, mullet) are totally different to crab/lobster traps but the skill in making them has been shown in your video. Even down to making prawn nets etc. Very enjoyable to watch after a weekend of drunkenness and no fishing !. lol Thanks for your efforts.

Nomad - No problem at all mate. Glad you enjoyed the video. In an area in the north east there is a byelaw where you must have a small rigid plastic “escape hatch” in the pot to allow small lobsters to escape. Fingers crossed for some good weather for you. Tight lines mate. 👍🏻🎣🦞🦀

@@TheFishLocker Can't wait to see the results of a job well done mate! My lads mad keen on crab netting and such just now and so it'd be a great thing to build together and deploy up here in the Scottish Highlands from our kayaks. He's developed a love of velvet swimmer crab of late after seeing both Smash Fishing and Troj's Fishing do catch and cook on their channels previously, so some awesome pots would undoubtedly be an excellent development in his fishing for sure. His uncle used to be a Dublin Bay Prawn fisherman and we've one of his old pots, so it'd be amazing to deploy it with some we've built ourselves. Very best of luck with the pots and the channel, cracking stuff!
@TheFishLocker
@TheFishLocker 5 жыл бұрын
J W - That sounds like a fantastic father-son activity. If you are after velvets aswel you could try making the pot and mesh’s quite small, smaller base, thinner tubing and shorter lengths. The prawn/langoustine pot you have already will have tiny mesh’s and likely hard rings in the spouts I imagine - to stop bigger crabs/lobsters getting in. Velvets taste sweeter than normal edible crabs but can be a handful. Best of luck. I can’t wait to see how you get on. 😊👍🏻🦞🦀🦐

Hi John, Great channel. I’ve made a couple of pots, not as good as yours but looking forward to trying them out when I can next get down to the boat. I fish in West Sussex and they are very hot on fitting escape hatches so I’ve adapted your design by adding a steel bar I had in the garage 45cm above the base at one end supported in the middle by a bit of the water pipe. Also saw your video re joining a string together, excellent. Really enjoy watching you, especially as I live too far from the boat so haven’t been able to get out this year.. all the best Ian

we do our creel eyes the same way except the other way around. it means the bottom is nice and tight and the top loose so once the lobster goes in the top lifts up and then drops back down after that way there's no way out! or if he sits on top off the eye he does not escape. your pots fish very well though.tight lines

God dam it John I'm going to give it a go. With a bit of practice the net building will get easier I reckon. One thought was to drill holes on the bent rods to let out air, or am I over thinking it. Also maybe a metal base, bolts and nuts instead of tacks. Where would I get the twine and needles? Great vid i realy enjoyed that one.

KWIM REAPER m - A steel base and frame would be perfect and serve to give added weight for sinking the pot. So if you can weld or know a blacksmith etc that would be perfect. This is simply how traditional pots from my home area are made. Some folks pour cement into the tubes to help with extra weight. I may pour sand in them and put a small bung in them. We’ll see how far I can be bothered to go.haha. The net tying is something that I really enjoy and once you get into it and find a rhythm it’s quite pleasurable. But best to practice first. I would google your nearest chandlers or simply ask some local fishermen. You can buy them all off eBay but they are usually cheaper from the local chandlers. 👍🏻🎣😉

I could have pulled out a better trap from my A$🤣 Just joking. You shared some serious skills for free. The store bought traps I have are more like a pile of cords and zipties holding together than crab pots now. I let mine soak for 48 hrs and most times I have healthy crab with as many as 30's to a trap when packed full of dead chicken. I'm not a big timer ,just lucked out on the place I found to crab fish. I'm just before sleep if this didn't make sense. I will be a subscriber and hopefully pick up on more of your shared knowledge. Many happy 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 to you sir.

Peter Attfield - In the north east coastal area you require what I called a limited shellfish permit. It is free but you must request one from the fisheries committee. I also believe you will need to fit an escape gap in the pot - which is a local byelaw. There is no limit on mesh size as far as I know. 😉👍🏻🎣🦞🦀

Hi John and the Fish Locker Team. Love your channel. I have made the pots in your video and have used them from the beach checking them at low water and have had some very good results with them. I am now looking at buying a boat with my brother to fish off shore and also to shoot a few pots. Have you done a video on how to rig a fleet of 5/6 pots or can you point me in the direction of a website that might. I have a few questions like :- Do I need to add additional weights to hold the start and end of the line to hold the pots in place (in addition to weights already in pots). Do I need a certain buoy and does it need to have my boat name on etc. Do i need a license to put out pots? Are there areas I am not allowed to put them? Are there any tips on not upsetting local commercial crab fishermen? Many thanks, Scott (from Norfolk)
@TheFishLocker

- Hi Scott. I have done a video showing how to rig and run a fleet. Its in the small boat owner playlist and the crab pot playlist. Almost all of the questions you ask are explained in the video. Hi I am looking to do this and prior to starting I have been reading the bye laws in my area (Northumberland). A new regulation is that all pots must be fitted with escape gaps of a particular size.
