Flat cap tutorial I put together to help with the construction of my flat cap pattern. This pattern is meant to be sewn with a 3/8" seam allowance which is already included in the pattern measurements.
The brim inserts and sweatband material are also available in my shop.
For this pattern and more leatherworking classes, supplies, tools, patterns, and art. Go to:
www.tonyallenbernier.com/
Some of which may also be found at:
www.etsy.com/shop/TonyAllenBe...
I started to sew the fold in the back when I do a one size fits all, After the sweatband is in and folded to the inside I put a line of stitches about 3/8" up across the back while I stretch that section out, it helps the cap look cleaner when you have the excess material from the bunching. I only do that on the one size fits all caps that have that style in the back. I'll put a picture of this up in my Etsy listing for the pattern.
When I make the large size it usually sits somewhere in the 7-3/8 to 7-5/8 US (A) range. Which is 22-3/4" to 24-1/2" head circumference.
When I make the Medium size it's usually fits around 6-7/8 to 7-1/8 US (A) sizes. Which is a 22 1/8" to 23" head circumference.
If you'd like to see more of my work I have a lot of pictures and albums on my Facebook page. / leatherworkerupholsterer

Hey brother you have gotten so much better at teaching and explaining you work as you do it. I would appreciate it if you re did this hat video using leather this time. I am a very visual learner and I know it would help me a lot seeing it done with leather. That way you could also explain your leather choices. Thank you in advance.

Thanks, Thats a good idea. I'll give it some thought. In the mean time to help out I would suggest going with a 2oz chrome tan. Make sure the direction with the most stretch goes in the same direction mentioned for the fabric version on the pattern printout.

Went and bought 24 clips too. Brilliant idea. If I can return some knowledge, instead of using the block of wood, try a strong magnet as a seam allowance guide. I purchased them from Lowe's for a few dollars. I also use one to hold my top and bobbin thread when starting a seam.

Great tutorials. Your machine seems so powerful to so easily over the visor/Peak. First, what type of machine is that, ..and secondly, what material do you use for your visor inset?
@TonyAllenBernier
@TonyAllenBernier 6 жыл бұрын
It's an industrial machine, meant for upholstery. The brand is Rex. I believe it's like 80 years old or something. The plastic I usually use is HDPE. But a slightly thinner cutting board material runs through the machine better.

Dude, great video!!! I liked the way you called attention to working the fabric as if one is a sculptor shaping the form of the hat - Bravo! The bad news is yer machine makes the most hideous sound I've ever heard on a sewing machine yet. I'm game and am purchasing your pattern. :D

Good evening Tony, I purchased your pattern a couple weeks ago and am now getting to sewing it. What length of stitch are you using or recommend?
@TonyAllenBernier
@TonyAllenBernier 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, It really depends on the size of thread i use. I go pretty wide when using a thick thread. I would suggest doing a small test piece to see what you like. You could make sure your sewing machine is dialed in at the same time.

No I don't. But I think if you pick one up and bend it a bit you shouldn't have a problem deciding whether or not it will work. Something else I thought would make good insert material are those self healing cutting mats you can get at the hobby shop.

Wonderful video, it has been very helpful and informative. We have bought your pattern and are now ready to make a leather cap! I'd like to make one kind suggestion though... your sewing machine clutch motor is so loud that it is very distracting. An industrial sewing machine servo motor has almost no sound, is extremely easy to install, makes industrial sewing a dream and can be purchased through Amazon for only around $100. You have a very special talent for making sewing videos and this would make your videos so much better. Just a suggestion. The very best to you!

How do you size the cap? I wear a larger hat 6-7/8 will this be large enough?
@TonyAllenBernier
@TonyAllenBernier 5 жыл бұрын
The etsy listing gives you the rough size for the middle/medium pattern line. Due to sewing techniques and material used it may not be right on the nose. If you do the larger of the three lines you should be good. I also suggest other ways to adjust size. Might be a good idea to go a little big then stretch the elastic sweatband so that is fits just right.

Hi Rita. If you select 100% or actual size in your print settings (it may say something else but similar. It all depends on your print software). It should print out so you can tape the parts together. If your print software isn't working for you OfficeDepot or a similar store can print it off on one big sheet. Thanks Rita. Tony

@TonyAllenBernier
@TonyAllenBernier 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Suzy, yes I make them in leather. I find its better to use a 1-2oz chrome tan. If it gets to thick it starts to look funny. But some prefer the "Thick" look. Yup you could sew it by hand. It would be a challenge! But could definitely be done.
