How To Make A Folding Cedar Lawn Chair
Kentucky stick chair, I made this folding lawn chair out of Cedar. Here are the measurements if you'd like to make one. This is a fun woodworking project that can be done in a day. The chair folds up for easy storage during the winter.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Shortly after KZfaq started, I was looking for a howto video for duck calls, with no results I decided to make my own video. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

The first time I saw one of these was in Belize on my honeymoon in May this year. Can't wait to put one together for an anniversary gift! We cut down a cedar tree a few months before the wedding and had the trunk milled, so I'll be able to use some of that lumber in the build. It should make for a great gift! Thanks for the tutorial.

I made one of these today. As I am a student, it was kind of a budget build - handsaw, a sheet of sand paper and cheap planks. It did, however, turn out pretty cool, which I guess goes to show that a good design outweighs fancy stuff : )

this is a great design. i had to go to 1/4" holes to make the seat and back pieces fan out properly. if you cut the rod with a dremel metal cutting wheel, the threads will allow a nut to easily start over the cut so you don't have to deal with all that excess rod. i used lock nuts. mine is cherry which is pretty but heavy. next one will be cedar. thanks for another fun project.

Very nice Carl, I've been making this style of chair for about 20 years. I have my own little tweeks. I use Douglas fir or red wood. Unless you get lucky and find some really good Cedar, I found it to be too weak. I like a taller back and use rope instead of allthread. I also make a a small chair for kids. Again very nice work!

Carl: I cannot emphasize enough the proper dimensions of the wood. My local box store had what they called 1 inch cedar but was actually 3/4 inch thickness. (note to self-check before buying.) I was anxious so I bought it. After following all the steps I sat in it in my shop. I broke the chair and bruised my ego. There probably isn't a recommended max weight rating but at almost 250 lbs, I really should have shopped for 5/4 or true 1 inch material. I am pondering on how much effort it will take to sit higher off the ground. I may just remake the broken 40" pieces.

+Richard Bennett Right?! just isn't what it used to be! Maybe make the front legs a littler thicker too.

Great looking chair Carl ! I was going to make a couple of adirondack chairs for the deck in my garden this summer but now you've given me a second option!! I do like the way they fold which would make them better for storage through the winter! Hmmm decisions decisions!?!? Great video Carl thanks for posting and keep up the good work, Trev
