Jenny when I decided to buy my first sewing machine from the Viking Sewing Gallery six years ago I had no idea how to quilt or cut fabrics. I got on KZfaq to see how I could do my new hobby and there you were. I have watched all your episodes and you my sweet friend taught me how to quilt. My mama was a quilter and dress maker for our family. I was born in 1964 so I knew it was a must for women to sew. My sweet mama tried to get me interested in sewing but I loved playing in the dirt more. I love to grow vegetables and flowers. My precious mom passed away in 1995 at the age of 55 due to breast cancer. My teacher was no longer here and I was 31 years old, lost and broken from her passing. She would be proud today to see my beautiful quilts and dresses. Thank you so much for being my role model and helping to guide me in the right direction. I too have a odd disposition with rulers and reading them. I have to see you do it first and then I can follow along. Your Triple plays are so much enjoyed. You and your girls are the best of the best. I so appreciate all of you!!

I love the concept of "picnic quilt." Quilts are to be used, washed, and loved. Yet, we are our own worst critics, so thanks for reminding us that probably only other quilters would examine our quilts to look for mistakes. Family and good friends will just love them.

Oh I do love a nice quilt to picnic on. I've never understood why people don't use their quilts for that. I agree, not an heirloom, but we like to sit on nice things. If you use busy fabrics you won't even notice any food stains. I love putting a quilt on the table with a piece of glass on top. They are just so welcoming to me. Thanks for posting.

Jenny, all I can say is that your tutorials about quilting have taught me far more in life than just quilting ... Over the years (and I've been with you from the very beginning!), you've provided me with words to live by. I was raised with a lot of "perfectionism" and gosh, does that just suck the life and fun out of so many things -- quilting included! It's not to say to be sloppy or cut corners, but rather to just make the best you can of what you've got -- even if that means fabric cut slightly imperfectly! :-) And, "Finished is better than perfect!!" You've become a dear voice in my life and I can't tell you how thankful I am to "have been able to meet you" -- even if across the internet airwaves. Biggest hugs to you. @MissouriQuiltCo

Thank you so much for being REAL!! I so appreciate "it is ok not to be perfect." Perfect makes it not enjoyable to sew. I try hard to do a good job, but every project is not flawless, BUT THEY ARE FINISHED.

Really appreciate the tips and tricks for when things are slightly wrong and how to accommodate them. Also “ it’s a picnic blanket “ is very freeing in forgiving yourself . It’s the making and loving the process that helps you achieve better and better results.

I love that Jenny shows how things don't have to be perfect. As a new quilter, I try so hard and still end up with less-than-perfect cutting/blocks. This took a lot of the worry out of it for me. And this quilt is so cheery, love the fabric.

Exactly. A couple years ago i brought a quilt to my long arm quilter and she suggested i put it in a show. I said “I appreciate it, but no thank you. My quilts are utilitarian - made to be cuddly and loved”. This is a hobby and i do it for fun, not a frustration.

Thank you, Jenny, for your relaxed attitude towards quilt making. I read that it was the practice of many of our ancestors to purposely include a mistake in every quilt made because none of us are perfect, so our quilts shouldn't be either. Love that outlook of enjoying the process and not getting uptight about the mistakes. Eleanor Burns always says about small mistakes, "Hang em high and let em fly!"

Jenny, I have followed you for MANY years and love your attitude! However, a couple of years ago I was watching an RV channel I frequented and I was SO surprised when she introduced you as a fellow camper she had just met! I was delighted to see how you took your featherweight and fitted your sewing into your relaxing camping vacation! Someday, if the Lord doesn't come back first, I hope to do the same. Yes! I always try to make my blocks as perfect as possible but I try not to stress when they aren’t. I think of the Amish. I’ve heard that those dear women always intentionally put an imperfection in their quilt because only God is perfect. I don’t have to worry about intentional imperfections. My quilt have enough without trying. 😊

I am beg/int quilter and have been watching you for awhile. Thank you girls for teaching us. Mine are *far*from perfect. But the receivers are delighted to have them. Anything handmade is from the heart and made with love. I have even received outgrown baby clothes and been asked to make medium sized baby quilts that the parents have as a reminder of their child and then can be passed down to their child when they have children of their own as a generational quilt. Those I leave a white patch on the back for names/dates to be added as passed down. Again, many thanks.

Great! Be careful you will be addicted. If you can collect small scraps, you must watch videos on “crumb “ quilts..most fun you will ever have sewing quilt tops. So easy, totally relaxing, no points, you will not want to stop sewing. It’s sad that beginners can’t do crumb quilts because you need years of collecting those scraps and beginners don’t have that stash to work with. If you haven’t tried crumbs yet, (Jenny did do a tutorial) but reply back and I’ll tell you whose tutorial I liked best.(KH)

@@Thepiecemaker hi! I get excited and go on and on too much about this..but I first learned by watching Darlene Michaud (5 yrs ago video) learning the ideas. Then watched every video on KZfaq and you will some learn your own way. Roxanne Ritter called hers a trash quilt. The lady on “Mostly quilts” did some on crumbs, but she took too much time thinking . Don’t do that.😂 Teresa DownUnder , she actually took time to press seams open.my best advice is to not go smaller than 1 1/2” pieces. You will soon learn what to watch for…too many seams together, too close to the block edge.and most important, make your stitches SMALL. So with all that cutting, the seams don’t come apart. Kay …have fun!

I love the idea of a picnic quilt! First you can practice on those points if that is important to you and also practice a scant quarter inch seam. Best of all you can throw it on the ground and have a fun time!! ❤it

I’m really envious of,people,who have places to go for picnics! I grew up and lived for many years in Phoenix, AZ where it’s hotter than yiu know where in the summer - how about over 110degrees Almost every day for months!!! And there wasn’t a park anywhere near our neighborhood - pretty pathetic! So my family didn’t do picnics - at all😧😧😧😧😧. But this is a very cute quilt for just about any time and sure would make a fun quilt for children!!! Thanks again for another wonderful tutorial and quilt😀😀😀😀😀😀

Love this quilt. Also, I never thought of using a panel on the back. Brilliant! I have a number of panels I don’t know what to do with. Will look at putting them on the back of some of my quilts. There is something about labeling a quilt a picnic quilt. It really does give permission to get it dirty. Many thanks for all your wise advice.

I know your trying to sell coordinate layer cakes but with some of these quilts of late the would be so perfect as scrappy stash busters. A lot of us collect leftover 2.5 inch squares and this would be a great way to use them with other leftovers. It would even be a great triple play if you each did a pattern only using stash scraps that were not crumbs but normal sized scraps.

Great quilt! This is one I will have to make. I’m one of those who would start with 5 1/2” squares. When cutting the side strips I would cut each one slightly wider then square up to the correct size. I’d also sew the triangles with the 4 patch on top to help me not to stretch the bias of the triangle. As you can tell, I’m one who needs all the forgiveness a block has to offer. 😂

A couple of months ago I made a quilt that has huge 19 inch blocks that are set on point. Since I had 6 blocks left over after completing the top, I used 5 of them in the backing. I bordered each of them and then staggered them on the back. I added more wider borders around the outside of the blocks in different colors, so it's sort of color blocked. The entire quilt was challenging to make, but it's all ready for me to quilt on my home machine. I love to try different techniques when making quilts and if a family member falls in love with it, I usually gift that quilt to them. I really like this picnic quilt, so I need to make one!
