In this Bonsai video we show you how to make a Giant Dawn Redwood Bonsai Forest. Bonsai Forests are a little different to a regular Bonsai as they involve more than one tree.
Hi everyone! We are back with another fun video with my good friend Attila Csintalan! Building a giant Bonsai Forest may seem a bit "advanced" as there is so many elements to the planting. But don't worry we've got you covered! We break down each stage to make it super easy to understand, even for Bonsai beginners! 🌿
While theoretically any species of tree can be used for a forest planting, there are some species that are much more suited to this style than others. I encourage experimentation to see which species you think would work best or even to develop new ideas! Some suitable species for Bonsai forests include Japanese Larch, Japanese Maples, Pine, and in our case, the beautiful and ancient Dawn Redwood. Generally, forest plantings are created with an odd number of trees, as this results in a sense of natural asymmetry. However, this is only a guideline, and ultimately, it's down to personal preference as it is your planting after all!
The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia Glyptostroboides) is a fantastic pick for Bonsai Forests. Its delicate leaves and branches scale down perfectly for Bonsai, letting you craft intricate details. Plus, it grows fast, so you can build that dense forest look relatively quick. As a deciduous tree, it adds a neat seasonal twist, turning from lush green to autumn gold. The reddish-brown trunk and unique bark give it that natural, aged vibe that suits Bonsai. This living fossil's historical significance adds an intriguing layer to its presence, making it a historically and aesthetically valuable addition to Bonsai Forests.

I think you and Attila work well together and bring out the best in each other. Working on your own on a forest of any size is difficult you just need more hands. I did an aspen forest for hubby's Christmas prezzie last year. I think it was 15 trees. I trimmed it and put the cuttings in water so I have one too now. Keep growing.xx

Great job guys your a good team. Not sure what your climate is there but one tip we use is to use muck to build up the edges and create a solid border to hold soil in. Muck is basically even parts of long fibersphagnum, akadama dust, and shredded clay, mixed with water to create a sticky muck consistency. One other tip when planning these big plantings your usually growing out the material, so each season I would repot the trees flattening out the root ball a bit more each season, it really makes getting the root down on the slab and close together much easier when assembling. Again stunning forest looking forward to watching it progress!

I've made a few slabs for my attempts at a forest planting. I still can't find the trees I love. The sealer coating on cement slabs or pots,I thought was my great one-of-a-kind idea's haha guess not. Hey it works great just seal the wholes after drilling cuz here in Michigan's weather water then ice will get into pours and crack and weaken the cement. One slab I used very lightweight re-bar which worked great if u have the tools to cut it. Another one I used a single peice of chicken fence and cut it just short of the end size and the other slab I used like u did the sheet-rock joint tape.. all 3 held up great being outside in michigan fir 3 years but honestly the unbreakable one is the one I used thin re-bar it seriously was knocked over and barley chipped the cement..

Thank you so much for your video. So perfectly explained!!! One question. How do you keep the birds from pecking and stealing the moss from these forests? I made one using your method, and within 3 days, the whole soil area was assaulted and foraged by birds and all the moss thrown aside. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks again.

Ahh noo! I have had this problem with my spaghnum moss on the surface of some of my pots but not very often. One effective method is to use bird netting or mesh to cover your Bonsai. Ensure that the netting is secured firmly to prevent birds from getting underneath. You could also employ visual deterrents such as reflective tape, old CDs, or scarecrows, which create visual disturbances that birds find unsettling. Another option is to use bird repellent sprays or gels that have odors or tastes that birds dislike. I hope this helps you with this problem!

I’m in the Pacific Northwest British Columbia canada. So would be very costly to ship if they could be imported.

Great job, but I noticed one tree in the middle with a badly distorted trunk compared to the others. It takes away from the overall composition of the group, but otherwise, nice job..

ngl maybe its just the video, but these seem to be to much 'in a straight line' for my eye, but then each their own, do whatever you like, there are no mistakes.
