"Hats are made the same way... they all have to be shaped, trimmed and sewn by hand". In this video, milliner Philip Ian Wright provides a passionate and fascinating insight into the process of how to make a hat. No matter the shape, decade, style or fashion, the methods of hat-making are the same today as they have been for hundreds of years. You can buy one of Philip's wonderful hats from his site www.philipwrighthats.co.uk

I was most impressed by the seamstress doing all the sawing. Those perfect straight lines are not easy to do in such tight space. Amazing workmanship.

It was an absolute pleasure working with Philip Ian Wright to produce this film. Hopefully it conveys his passion for hats and the wonderland that is his factory. It has certainly rubbed off on our now-hat-wearing crew!

I have to say, this was the most relaxing education I have ever sat through. I learned so much in so little time. I just looked at the time and wished there was more left. Thank you for sharing some of your information on hats. I know there is a life time of knowledge you have. Hoping for another video. Thank you.

These hats are absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for the tour as it was very personal for me as I know it was for you to let us see such a personal side of you in your business. The care you took for each individual hat brought to mind ,one who cares for babies ,children molding them ,it was so lovely the way you interacted with the people almost brought tears to my eyes ,Like you really cared for them .Again ,Thank You ! And I pray that you know how blessed you are and that you use your talents to glorify God rather than yourself.Although I never felt for one moment watching this video that you glorified yourself or put yourself on a pedestal.

Wow! He is definitely a Master at his craft!!! I never imagined the intense scrutiny and objectivism involved in making hats. I now completely appreciate the difference in custom made vs. off the rack (sale) hats. I could watch him do this all day, day after day. And his accent is exhilarating as well.

Thank you so much for letting us have a little glimpse into the process of making such lovely designer hats. Its been truly inspiring and if I can't make my hat from scratch for my daughter's wedding, I have at least been inspired to buy a plain but well fitting hat and embellish/customise it myself to go with my mother of the bride outfit!

Loved this video and watching Philip trying on the various hats! The complicated machinery involved in the steps of production were very intriguing, along with the explantation of materials, styling and embellishments. I loved the comment that the way a hat turns out is not going to be exactly as another because, "they're not twins, they're cousins."

Thank you for such a wonderful insight to hat making. What a wonderful insight you have given us into your fabulous world of hat making. As a home sewist I wanted to see if it could be possible for me to try and make hats, now and again to go with the outfits I make. Making me realize that you would be the person with the "perfect eye" to know what suits a person's face shape, frame, the outfit they will be wearing and also reflect their personality. What a fabulous range of talents you and your team have. Clearly passionate about your art. Thank you so much.

Excellent description of what works and what doesn't for hats based upon the individual.....I'm just getting into hats myself and this is excellent input....Thank you Phillip! Seeing that a short military or non haired person (like myself) looks far better in a smaller brim.....never realized that before but awesome input...Thanks!!!

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this video, I was looking for how to make my own sunhat, and did absorb some relevant info, though not the overall instructions I'm looking for, but this was riveting! My other half mentioned Panamas all roll up the other day, (I had no idea they were supposed to) so I was able to update his info and tell him most don't and why some very expensive ones can :). Thanks for this, I really appreciate good hats now...

But just to back it up...Buy crin and ribbon that is approx 1cm wide (and the same width ribbon and crin (Randall Ribbons Luton)...Then on a flat bed...machine the crin to the ribbon...Hand sew the button or top of crown...then on the continue to sew the ribbon (backed by the crin) on the straw braid machine over lapping the edge...It is quite an art to guage the crown circumference then turn for the side band of the crown

Hi Rich...The hat I am wearing is called the "Snatch Trilby"...well that is what I named the shape...I wear it to the back of my head so that when people speak to me they speak to my face..and then I never take it off...I am 5ft 7"...If you are taller then you would possibly need the "Ian Trilby" so that is in proportion to your height...You can see both on my web site ...We can make it for you....or make it out of a paper panama and then hand-paint it..Regards..Philip
