Thank you for explaining the sewing terms while you did this! Like how to do a back stitch, or basting, or front stitch. I’ve sewn for years but I never had “formal training” and when I read books I get confused when they try to explain it but it still doesn’t make sense. Seeing it and watching someone do it really helps! Thanks so much!

Just watched Justine talk about coming trends for fall and winter of 2019/2020. I don't like any of it. Silly and more like costumes than real clothes. But I have thought of making myself a cloak. A real cloak, to actually wear, out of warm and luxurious fabrics, not as part of a Halloween costume.

If this was already answered, apologies however what is the reasoning behind cutting two pieces for hood and cloak in place of cutting on a fold? Would that work the same or does the seam placement affect how it drapes?
@KattLover5412
@KattLover5412 3 жыл бұрын
It allows you to save fabric. as your hood pieces can fit within the folded square you used to cut out your cloak, though i dont think they showed that in the video. It probubly also affects the drape though

@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 5 жыл бұрын
It's probably the fabric weight that causing this. If it's part of a whole costume, you can sew velcro on the inside and then have the other side of the velcro on your garment underneath. It might make it a little easier then trying to use pins.

Loved the way you did this! If I wanted to do a fancy buckle instead of the ribbon for a costume I'm making, how would I be able to attach that to my cloak? Also, where do you get the interfacing for your projects? I've tried looking at Joanns, but couldn't find it, or looked in the wrong section. Thanks!
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 4 жыл бұрын
yeah, I pick up my interfacing from Joann's. If your fabric is good enough weight, you might be able to skip it. You can definitely do a buckle instead. I'd just top stitch or hand sew it on top. good luck!

Perfect Timing! I have all the materials I need for a cloak, and making my own pattern, but can't find a single tutorial for sewing all the pieces. I have been watching multiple videos and trying to take notes from each - exhausting. My design has a few more embellishments than yours, but I am also using brocade that I just love to pieces. However, I decided to put my brocade on the outside fabric because I thought it would be a bit too scratchy for the inside. (I have sensitive skin.) How does your cloak feel with the brocade on the inside when wearing it? I'm going to wear out my replay button with this tutorial! I planned to start yesterday, but glad I waited now, because I can usually follow your tutorials straight through. I also love that you are using edge stitching (your understitching) as most videos are not. This weekend will be great for getting this done. Thanks to you and this tutorial!
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 жыл бұрын
+chesh kat I'm so glad you're enjoying our tutorial. I think the understitching and edge stitching really does help. Yes, it's kind of a pain and time consuming, since an adult size cape is really large but it really makes it easier to fold the lining and keep it on the inside and just looks nicer. My brocade is more satin-y so it makes for a nice lining. There are different types of brocade and I'm sure yours will look fabulous as the main fabric. Please post a pic on our fb wall when you finish. :D
@cheshkat6321
@cheshkat6321 8 жыл бұрын
+Professor Pincushion I made a mini cloak so I could practice without ruining my pretty brocade fabric. Finished it today but trying to decide on which buttons to use - I love large buttons more than ties. I'm a button addict. Now I feel much more confident about cutting the brocade fabric for my cape - with different big buttons. I've probably watched this video 30 times, since I've only been sewing since July. BTW, thanks for the tutorial on hand sewing a buttonhole! Didn't want to change my cloak idea for smaller buttons. I don't have facebook, but I'll let you know how the big cloak turns out. With this video, I'm sure it will be just as great as my practice cloak that I can't wait to wear tomorrow. The understitching transforms it to look professional so I really took my time doing it. I'm very proud of it!

@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 5 жыл бұрын
To make it easier on yourself, you should create your pattern and then take it with you to the fabric store. It really depends on the width of the fabric and that way the cutting table can help you get exactly the amount that you need.
@jesss.5260
@jesss.5260 5 жыл бұрын
You want yours to be about your height but have to account for it going over your shoulders and such. So measure your shoulder height and add about a foot, that's how wide your semi circle will be
@KattLover5412
@KattLover5412 3 жыл бұрын
You need atleast double that in length. The way I made mine was by using the fabrics width (which was something like 44 in my case) and just got 44x88 for my fabric. In yardage, you can do the math for it. Thats the minimum, get larger if you want a super large hood or to have a bunch extra. I found another tutorial that helped me get that.

How can i measure the hood part for kids? Great video btw! I like the steps you made
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 6 жыл бұрын
The bottom of the hood needs to correspond with the same measurement as the neckline of the cape. For the height of the hood, just take the height of head times 1 1/2. The width of the hood can be the length of the side of the head plus 3 or 4 inches. The only measurement that needs to be exact is the bottom of the hood to the neckline of the cape because those two pieces fit together. The other two measurements are not as crucial because the hood is meant to drape and not be fitted around the head. Good luck! :)

Nicely done. It's been ages sense I made a cloak. I probably would do it different but to some extent that's preference. IE I'd make 2 cloaks 1 with the lining and one without. Then stitch them together pillowcase style, turn and top stitch. Also I'm a fan of closures instead of ribbon. A frog looks 900% cooler in my opinion.

@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 жыл бұрын
+gal ben ezra I would have a friend help you get your length measurement. That's the best way to get an accurate length. You don't have to do a lining but you'll have raw edges all around. You can either hem or finish the raw edges, or leave them raw if you're working with a fabric that doesn't fray. good luck! :)

WOW - I have understood most of what you said in the assemble part. BUT may I ask a question pls, I have a form of Parkinson and sewing the last seam (lining hood to 1/2" seam) is going to prove quite difficult because I shake so. It took me 3 days to take notes of 14mins. Do you/would you know of another way to do the very last seam? I realize it is an easy stitch for most but my left hand has a mind of his own! lol Thanks for thinking for me. Yes, I am a beginner at all of this! How hard would it be to make a cape that buttons on? Is that hard??? (For me at least) Thank you for all the tutorials. I look forward to learning. Many Blessings, Eve

do you mean the hand stitching part? There are a couple of options for you. You can just go ahead and sew that part with the sewing machine. But if you do this, make sure your bobbin thread color, really matches the outside fabric of your cloak because the stitches will go through both layers. Another option, is using fusible bonding, like stitch witchery or steam-a-seam. You can find this in the notions department and it comes on a small roll. You put it between two layers of fabric and then use your iron to melt the bonding web and it will basically glue the fabric layers together. It's a no-sew option and a little neater to use than fabric glue. I hope this helps and good luck! :)

Hi!!! I'm making a jacket that has a hood front piece. I made myself one with fleece blankets, came out pretty good. Now I'm making one for my daughter and I'm putting in a fur lining for the hood front piece. Any suggestions on sewing with fake fur? this hood tutorial was super helpful, BTW.

nice!!! I've sewn with faux fur a few times and it's not too bad unless you count being super messy as being bad. I would recommend using a walking foot, if you don't have one, hand baste the pieces together first before doing a seam. It's kind of like working with velvet in that things can shift because of the pile. To hide the seamline on the right side, after you finish doing a seam, look at the right side and use a straight pin to pull at the fur strands out of the seam. This will make things look more blended. good luck! :D

Can you swap the ribbon for buttons to clasp it together? like instead of it being open in the middle it's clasped to the side near the collar bone?

+shelby roberts yes, you can use any type of fastener you choose. If you want something nicer, you can use a frog fastener.

is it possible to be worn in reverse as well, with the 'lining' worn on the exterior? I want to make a versatile cloak :)

yup, as long as you don't do a fastener that's completely on one side, it should be reversible since it's all finished. :) If you make one, please post a pic on our fb wall :D

I cut the 4 hood pieces in the fabric however they don't match up as they are the same shape... I followed your video but didn't realise I needed to cut the pattern both ways. Did I miss that instruction??? Or am I just stupid.

The way you attached the hood would that work if you wanted to do a straight collar on the cloak. I wanted to do a mandarin style collar.

hmmm....was your fabric wrinkly when you pinned and cut them out. If you're using the same pattern for both, then the issue is usually with pinning and cutting. :(

If I needed to shorten the hood (ie-make it smaller) how would I do that?
@rcredmon
@rcredmon 2 жыл бұрын
Since nobody has answered you, and since I have done just that same thing a little while ago, I'll see if I can help. I started by laying my cloak out flat, and making sure my hood was nice and lined up and flat. Then I took a cheap Amazon cloak that had a smaller hood and traced that onto the cloak... I ended up cutting off about four inches of the top. Then I turned it inside out, and stitched it. Then I pressed the stitch and hand sewed the hem into the lining of the hood. Using a whip stitch. I wasn't concerned with getting the entirety of the inside all perfect... Just the first few inches inside. Hope that helps.

Would you recommend this pattern for a leather cloak with a fabric lining? If not, what would be a good pattern?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 7 жыл бұрын
It's not really the pattern that I get concerned about but rather what your sewing machine can handle. A lot of home sewing machines don't handle sewing leather well. If you have a heavy duty or industrial sewing machine than you can use this pattern. If you have a regular consumer sewing machine, maybe consider using a faux suede type fabric instead of leather. I've definitely seen them in my local Joann's and it'll be easier and more forgiving to work with :)

How many yards of fabric did you use for this?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty short but I think it was about 3 yards. I can't remember if I used all of it or I had extra. This was a year ago so my memory on yardage is a little fuzzy. If you make your pattern, I would take it with you to the fabric store so you can get a more accurate amount.

Starting at 4:50, is that what others call stitch in the ditch? Because I am confused on this part. I see how to do it, thankfully you showed it, but other tutorials say stitch in the ditch and then don't show what they did.
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 7 жыл бұрын
The technique I show at this step is called understitching, which is different than stitch-in-the-ditch. Stitch in the ditch is when you sew exactly in the seamline so when you finish, you shouldn't be able to see your stitches at all. I use this technique in our How to Sew a Block Quilt and it's a common quilting technique. It allows you to sew layers together but it won't be noticeable on the right side of your project. Understitching, on the other hand, the stitches are sewn next to the seamline, usually on the side considered the lining. It's purpose is to help with turning the lining over to it's correct side so it's easier to do an edge stitch. It's not going to kill your project if you skip the understitch, but you'll notice the lining will be a little less cooperative to work with and the edge won't seem as crisp. I hope that helps! :) Please post a pic when you finish your cloak!

+When you scroll too far on someone's phone The Hooded Cloak Pattern tutorial is the precursor to this tutorial. When you draft your cloak, you have the option to use your measurements and have it be as long as you wish. The smaller cloak does fit me, it's just short so that the whole thing can be seen on camera. The assembly steps, as demonstrated in this tutorial will be the same regardless if you do a full length cloak or a short one. If you haven't gone through our hooded cloak pattern tutorial, you can watch it here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7yjZah2m9rLk6s.html Hope that helps clear things up.

Not really no, when I did measure mine at 54 inches and then proceeded to cut it following these directions, I ended up with only half the length. In other words I wasted fabric, which is very unappealing.
