Thank You Dave Canterbury for the video last night on this knife build. I watched it 3 times before transforming my putty knife into an extremely sharp, good batoning, and great scraping knife. Even though the edge retention is very poor, overall, it’s an incredible emergency knife. Please find the LINK to David Canterbury’s video below. Also, do follow my LINKS below Like And SUBSCRIBE. Looking at old cutlery makers videos, I think they skip heat treatment and just hammered the knives in shape and hardness. So if the metal is too soft, hammer it like a scythe

Sometimes we see channels coming out with similar subject matter all near the same time, and each acts as if they originated it. It is the mark of character when a man gives credit to the channel he got the idea from. I keep a thin blade putty knife in the kitchen. I rounded the corners off a wee bit so that won't dig in. I scrape cast iron cookwear with it. Use it to separate frozen bread slices. Very useful.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl

I'm with you on that. Usually they take someone else's idea or topic, put a little twist on it, and then call it their own. How fragile is your ego if you can't even say, "I got a great idea or technique from X Channel. Here's my version or demonstration of it."

Great video and very noble to give Dave the shout out, IMHO. People should know that a coarse grinding stone will be less likely to burn the temper out of your blade than a fine stone. I had it reversed in my own head for a long time and that's why I mention it here. Do all the shaping that you can with a coarse wheel and then maybe move to a fine file for the finish work before the actual "sharpening" phase on a wet stone.

I’ve done the same, old hickory by Ontario knife company. Sad they just closed theirs doors. I’ve bought their factory second butcher knives for like $6, and made some nice camp knives with them. I think replacing the wooden handles makes it nicer in the hand too. All the mountain men back in the frontier days, were most likely using big butcher knives as their edc, as opposed to the Bowie knife we assume they had.

Sounds like a good rainy day project. Personally, I do not trust my angle grinder enough to try it on something like making a knife blade. I’ll have to go with my belt sander to get the putty knife to the shape that works best for me. Your finished project turned out very nicely. Thanks for sharing.

👍👍👍 .. nice 😊. The Man knows! 👍. Unroll the electrical cord extension reel completely to eliminate the danger of an 'Induced Magnetic Field' and possible subsequent electric cable overheating under Load 😊. A nice little Project. I suppose that, in the absence of the appropriate electrical grinding tools, if one has enough spare time / idle hands, a hack saw and files/s would suffice. Treat as an 'ongoing project' (akin to 'whittling') to counter 'boredom' aka 'Mull Time' 😏. Thanks for sharing David, take care ..

AC current alternates polarity so it cannot induce a magnetic current, therefore no need to unroll unless you just enjoy it. If it was DC, such as a welding lead, then that would be true.
@thomasmusso1147
@thomasmusso1147 Ай бұрын
@@justme7478 I don't think so. Quote: "The magnetic field produced by an alternating current is not canceled out because the changing magnetic field induces an EMF that sustains the magnetic field. This phenomenon is fundamental to the operation of devices like transformers and motors that rely on electromagnetic induction to function properly." Go research it. If not so, at the very least, look up photos of melted cable on extension reels .. plenty out there.

G'day from "down under" David, just goes to show what can be done with very little and one of the inherent beauties is you can choose any blade shape. I did do one of these back in the day ...... 30 years ago ; ). And as an electrical apprentice we did one as a wire stripping knife out of a power hacksaw blade, though we did have to blow a hole for the second rivet with an arc welding rod. I also did do several "file" knives too, though in fairness I had access to an industrial surface grinder and oven back then. I do now have a modest "store bought" cutting tool collection, though I did buy a tramo machete specifically for modification in much the same way, ....... just on a larger scale ; ) and I've also converted an ol' felling axe head into a Hudson Bay job with custom handle, ....just because ; ) Btw; we all get our inspiration from somewhere and I respect that you gave Dave C the acknowledgement in this instance, ..... mind you, he probably got that from somewhere else too ; ) Anyway, great work mate !!!. Cheers Duke.

Wait, razor sharp is soft metal? That doesn't sound right. Straight razors & filet knives are usually MUCH harder than Bushcraft and camp knives.

When it only takes a few passes on the stone to razor sharpen it and only a few cuts to dull it, it's soft metal.

Some will argue but judgement day will take care of the rest. And for that I feel sorry for those individuals. Can you imagine if everyone on earth loved God and Christ as much as they love us? None of this would be happening and the United States would be the strongest and most loving country in the world. Can you imagine what the powers to be could get done while serving God and following his word. Just imagine. This whole situation is sad when you really think about it. Evil can only take control if you allow it and stray away from the word of God.

Putty knives are made of dangerous material, should not be ground. That's what pops said. You don't appear to have a mask on. You are dangerous.

What is the dangerous material in a putty knife that should not be ground? My putty knives are too thin and flexible for a bush knife. I’d want a thicker more rigid spine. I make them from files and saw blades.

I don't watch or support Canterbury in any way. Not only is he a known lier, he is a shady business practitioner and steals othwr people's ideas in order to make money off of them and he spreads false information about his subject matter. He is auite knowledgeable but I can not support such a shady sheister.

After my mentor Gundog 5, I've learned most of what I know about firemaking and bushcraft from him. I'll always appreciate him for that. By your own self righteous standards, YOU... and indeed I are also liars and shady shysters.
