My putty-knife knife is not very batonable, but it’s a fire maker in every other respect. I’ve shown in the video Linked below that its spine will give up good sparks and ignite char materials. In another video Linked below it cut, shaved, scraped, and withstood light batonning while I fashioned a bow drill set out of Virginia Pine. And in today’s video, it absolutely burned the woods up! It Ferro Rod ignited Tulip Poplar Bark to ignite a branches fire.
I found some fatwood and the knife easily processed it into shavings and scrapings before raking fire from the Ferro Rod for their ignition to start another branches fire.
It also did a lot of pruning along the way, lopping off quite a few branches and saw briars with great ease. Come watch the humble little homemade putty-knife knife outperform all expectations!

Hi David! I was delighted to see another video featuring the putty knife. I am assuming we are likely to see full flower from the Mullein over the next couple of days.

Boy, I like that little putty knife. It it might be humble and it's not the stoutest knife, but it's a great cutter, whittler, scraper and sparker ... and it sharpens back up in a jiffy!! --- Mr. Mullein Plant is getting tall and is growing pretty yellow plumes in his bonnet!

👍👍👍 Good Morning David .. it's always a pleasure watching your posts. 'Setting the Forest on Fire' .. 😁. Here in Switzerland, the Authorities do not have much of a sense of humour regarding, with eye-watering fines the order of the day 😳. During Fire Ban periods, they even have Helicopter Patrols overhead equipped with what I am lead to believe, 'Heat Sensing' Hardware. Thus, I shall leave it to you and watch from a safe place 😁. Yep, 'home-grown sfuff' can, and does often give one great pleasure and satisfaction in their use. Thanks for the share .. and until your next, take care .. Now, if the rain lets up (very wet here), I can get out later into my adjacent forest and harvest some detritus left behind by the Forestry Services, for drying on my Flat (Apartment in USA-speak 😏) Balcony.

I always like watching your videos. If I can't start a fire by now, I'm a dummy. That's a skill that can save a life, whether for warmth, light,cooking or just comfort. Being lost in the wilderness is much better with a fire. It's like having a home base.

I'm thinking the lanyard hole could make a decent bearing block as it's made of brass

There's a lot of drag around that circumference. More than a pointed spindle in a bearing block.

I remember in welding school my instructor had me heat my chipping hammer up red hot with a torch and then quench it in cold water to harden it. You could tell it was hardened when a file would just skate over it. Wonder if you could do that to the putty knife knife edge?
@DavidWestBgood2ppl
@DavidWestBgood2ppl 2 ай бұрын
Hardening like that makes it brittle. It's too thin to be brittle. I've come to like it just as it is. The razor's edge goes away quickly, but not that great working. It's long lasting and durable.

I cringe watching you kneel in those leaves....here in north Alabama chiggers are bad. Worse in pine straw but just as bad in leaf litter. Apparently you don't have a chigger problem in south carolina!
