I noticed this has been been posted 4 years ago and we'll I'm just now seeing it and I have a question about the diffusers. If your diffuser didn't protrude from the face of the board would that help with the bleed over and lower your overall cost?

Awesome! I wish I had one of these as a kid for pickup games Another thing you could do to brighten up the team names/hide the unlit bulbs is have a horizontal separator between the team names and numbers. More of the light from the strip would be reflected up and away from the numbers

Oh, this does bring some memories, when back in the day I had this project (just on a circuit simulator, all software, no actual hardware other than the pc itself) where we could do whatever as long as it met some goals. As a part of it, I end up with an array of, I think, eight symbols (i.e., letters, numbers) but, instead of a 3x5, they were sixteen segment displays each. I had to code them myself, solving a Karnaugh map for each letter, map and extra symbol (I guess I did something around 40 of them total). The idea was more or less the same as here, but at lower level (logic gates, etc., instead of programming). These projects really make me want to go and make something... I don't know what, but something.

Bob, I have a tool that works wonderfully for exactly the repetitive hole drilling. it's kind of a "portable drill press". it's called a Portalign and it attaches a hand drill to make the job easier. if you search "Portalign", you'll find several different drill guides like it. they even have depth stops. Hope this helps!

@Iliketomakestuff

Depends on the battery and load (number of LEDs) really, but if you have a decently sized LiPo, it'd work for a couple of hours probably.

Excellent project Bob, I've been thinking about something like this for my nieces and nephews and their new basketball court. To have an even bigger contrast and a more pleaseruable expericene for the viewers u can have a yellow color to make up the numbers but the lights that would be "off" could instead shine purple which is a contrast color to yellow. Just an idea that I thought of. Ur insane at making ideas come to real life, gj man.

Hey I'm not Bob and I like the stuff Bob makes! And I love this one! I have two small variations in mind: 1) make the LED "cups" shape transition from round to square to get a "pixel" look. it might be the final nerdy touch (you already put in 3d print, Bluetooth, arduino, it's more than enough for an average nerd!) 2) use plexiglass bars for the LED instead of cups. you should have a polished side surface to act as a light guide, polished bottom face (LED side) and textured front face. this works for sure if LED and light guide size are roughly the same, as in LEDs in user interfaces. So you might consider building a more compact version of the board reusing your current LEDs.

Ours would sit on the scorers table and it would be much more reliable if there were just physical buttons on the back of the scoreboard. I might be able to figure it out too, but it would take some research!!

I'm about to embark on building my own version of this over the weekend. Have the electronics figured out for my customization. What's I'd love to know that are some more details about the woodworking. Any chance you can get us the layout/spacing of the circles? I'm forgoing BT and using arcade buttons for ease of use by others during an actual sporting event. Making second box that can be used with (quick connect, already wired) to display countdown clock. Will have start/stop and potentiometer to set the time. Would love to know the spacing, will help a lot!

Hey Bob love your channel! was wondering if you counter sunk the LED lights flush to the board would you have had the same problem with the light bouncing off each other. keep up the great work you do Bob. P.S could you build a Bluetooth car kit that connects phone/tablet to cars that don't have Bluetooth ability.

Great work! Actually in the process of making one of our own. Although instead of using the arduino 101 we are just implementing simple buttons with the arduino uno. Any guidance on how to convert this code form using a bluetooth library to a simple buttons?

When gluing led matrices I found black hot glue works beautifully to prevent light infiltrations

You could make a wooden collet to be larger in diameter than back of drill . Collet slips between drill and drill bit secured behind drill head. That way it stops exactly at your wooden spacer stop mechanically

Would changing the color help with the contrast? Say red for the "on" led and green for the "off" led.

Good stuff. I was thinking you were going to resolve the contrast issue by programming the non illuminated LEDs to be a contrasting colour. (e.g. numbers in yellow and contrast in blue.)

I made a similar score sign and having the lens actually recessed in the "cup" worked best. I had similar problems with my tests, sunlight made the lens all glow...
