Flash dormer apron. We used to put our own in as we roofed. Not as good as that. But they worked. All the roofers did a lot of lead work. I am a Carpenter. And we did as well. For a dormer the apron was straight off the roll. Dressed in and window in. Not as fancy as that.

hi Stu awesome videos, I have learnt so much since watching your vids, could you explain how you sealed the overlap of the 3 pieces of lead on the window cill, thanks grahame

I assume you’re talking about the window trays. These are flat lapped. You can’t weld the join as it makes the lead too long. And the lead will split as it expands and contracts over time. The window is fitted with the sill rebated so no water can track back underneath. The window frame is also sealed with a think bead of sealant.

Just a question Stuart how come you lap weld instead of butt weld? It would make it thinner to get under the slate? Is a butt weld better in your opinion? Thanks 😎

I lap weld because it’s the way I was taught to do it. I’ve worked with so many lead workers over the years. And I’ve never actually met another lead worker that butt welds. I don’t think one is more better than the other. But you just have to do the one you find the easiest.

How do you guys rate the size of your lead?, For instance, Here in the States if it's 2 1/2 pounds per square foot it's known as 2 1/2 pounder,is yours heavier?

Our lead goes up in codes. Typically from code 3. To code 8. Code 5 for example is 2.24mm thick. And weights 25.4 Kg per square meter

Very interesting how it is done.....For years to busy "Hash Bash and Draw the Cash" to wait around or see how some of the lead is worked... Well done..... Hope you took in a sample of lead to your Physiotherapist to give him a sample of the lead weight you are lifting (may give him a shot of lifting the lead without getting a hernia).
