Hey just a suggestion overall, at the end of your videos you should add up the price that it took to make the thing that you made. Just so that we can be like "oh cool that's pretty cheap", or "oh snap that's expensive". Just to get an idea. But thank you!! I love your videos!

Gerrit Sluyter Well if you calculate time, materials, and tools, this is probably a $3-4000 board. If you subtract the tools (because you already own them), and value your time at $25/hr for a day (8 hrs), then this board was about $250 ($200 in labor, $40 in trucks + wheels, $10 in griptape + hardware). You could get a better complete longboard on Amazon for 60 bucks, but hey it was about the journey, not the destination.

But it’s not about the cost but the creation. If everything was down to cost, you’d never invest in these projects. Most things cost less if bought in a store. But if it’s handcrafted, that’s something else. The tools you invest in should be for multiple projects. I’ve built 10 planters, 10 bird boxes, two book shelves and a dining room table. Next project is a longboard. Now I’ve probably spend $500 on tools and $100 on screws and fittings with still lots left over. That’s a lot of money for one project but what I’ve created so far is maybe +$500 in value. Obviously you have to account for time spent but also think of the new skills you’ve picked up, and going back to what I said earlier, “it’s your creation”. Do it for the love too. And build up your tools over time. I started with a hand saw, electric drill. I learnt how to put things together. Simple things. As you develop, naturally you want to improve and so will your tools.

I really like that you do these projects for the sheer joy of creating and building, and don't get too caught up on perfection or the minutia of each task. Manual work is wildly under-appreciated in our society, especially as we have computers either printing or milling more and more objects for us, so I appreciate that you're reminding people that they can try something on their own and learn and master new skills. Awesome.

That was fun, thanks. For that stripe, my guess is cherry. As for the grip-tape, polyurethane and play sand would've been a great alternative. I used that process on a swing seat in my back yard, and it works wonderfully. Sorry to be a youtube know-it-all ;)

actually, it's a fairly common thickness for DIY boards, 3/4". A lot of people use birch plywood to make their own boards, which generally comes in that thickness.

I Like To Make Stuff Oh, :3 Next time could stack thinner piece's of Baltic birch. about 3-4 layers of it glued into a single piece should give you some flex and will more than likely last longer.

***** yeah, absolutely! I definitely plan on making a ply board in the future. A friend and I are going to try to make some forms too, so the board has some shape to it, but that's a whole process that I need to understand a little better before trying it.

im sure you already knew it but there is a reason why longboards are not made from massive hardwood. If you cruise along Californian roads its not a big deal ... but if you mishandle it or jump onto it in a wrong way its gonna break. Its beautiful to do it like this, but know the forces ... and what to use it for (Boards that are layered are about 100% stronger, they flex more etc...)

I'm really glad you've left some of your earlier videos online. For one, it shows how far you've come as a presenter and how comfortable you've come in front of the camera. But more importantly to me, it shows what you can do when you've got limited tools compared to what you have now and what you can do with them. I'm hoping to start making my own KZfaq videos soon, and videos like this showing where you started from compared to where you are now are brilliant! Not sure if you ever read the comments on your older posts, but I think this video now means I've watched everything you've posted! I've just started downloading the podcasts you've done and really looking forward to listening to them! Love the content, and can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Haha I actually love this all the references to some one that does skate haha. I'm a sponsored long boarder and some of my best boards are the ones I make because you can make it how you want it... Within reason that is. Good job on scoring the wheels and trucks off Amazon that's all you really need for a first board and if your not going ham. Nice work bud love the vids keep it up.

I make longboards. I go the more traditional route of making them with baltic birch plywood so that they last long. But that board is great for casual riders (and a lot cheaper). And i found it really funny because I use, literally, the exact same trucks and wheels set from amazon. They are really good. Nice job.

+Jx3 Productions I would say cedar would be too soft to make a usable product. Possibly you could make a sandwich of wood with cedar on the outside like a veneer with hardwood on the inside. But hey who am I to dictate what you do. Best of luck.

Cuba Chattyman actually its a different krriented kingpin rather than it being on the bolt it gives you a better turning angle and i would defifnitely recomend itfor any longboarder

thanks for inspiring me to make 2 of my own board. I got a hand carved one in california, it was amazing, the grip on the top was just carvings in the wood sticking out at different heights to make a really cool design in the shape of an native american with a head-dress, in which got ran over by a car, so I looked up videos, found this, and a couple months later finally found the courage to start making them.

Pretty sure you put the trucks on backwards, the king pin is usually on the inside.

+islandonlinenews These are rkp's (reverse kingpin trucks), they work differently than tkp's (traditional kingpin trucks) which are the one's you are thinking of.

Actually on a Longboards alot of the time the trucks are supposed to be that way with the king pin facing outward

Thank you so much for this video! I wanted to get a longboard for a costume I needed , and in Israel stuff like that is stupidly expensive, your video totally saved me! Although I don't have the equipment and skills to build it but I think I can figure it out
