This is a video about how to make a magic wand on a wood lathe. This wand is inspired by the Harry Potter books and movies and the wider wizarding world. In this quick tutorial I show how to go from a block of wood (walnut), to a finished wand for your fun and enjoyment.
I start out by mounting a piece of black walnut between centers on the wood lathe. The blank is about 1 x 1 x 14 inches in length. I proceed to round the block of wood using a spindle roughing gauge starting on the end and moving from high point to low point toward the center. With a pencil I mark the location of the handle. Then using a spindle gouge I proceed to shape the wand end of the wood on the tailstock side. The handle is shaped with a 3/8" spindle gouge and brought down on the sides with a small skew chisel. I mark out some lines and burn them in with a wire burner. These are to define the detail we will put on the handle for grips. For a hand-carved look I carve a random series of flats and edges on the wand near the tip. I make a burn stipple pattern between the lines on the handle with a wood burning tool. To complete it I coat it with three coats of spray lacquer.
Now It's time to test its' magical properties!

You should! If you don’t want to put the carved facets on the end with a chisel, you can always sand them in as well! 😃

Love your ideas and how your present the tutorial. I have another idea similar to the wand. During my tour in the USMC I noticed a few officers carrying a bullet tipped stick while in dress uniform. Was not regulation, but at times I would see it. If I remember correctly it was referred to as a swagger stick. It consisted of a turned hard wood tipped with a 30 cal bullet. One end was the tip of the bullet and the other was the casing. Not sure of the length, but it seemed to be about 12 to 14 inches, round and tapered to fit the bullet tip and the casing at the other end. It was custom made so the size of the bullet. diameter of the wood and it's length would be up to the designer . It was commonly used as a pointer. I hope you can picture what I'm trying to describe. If you are interested let me know and perhaps you could develop a tutorial. I would like to try making this myself but I don't have the resources to try it.

Yeah it’s always a lot easier when the lathe is holding it for you. Especially if you can lock the spindle.

Beautiful wand! Do you have any advice for someone wanting to get into woodturning? I really want to try it, but lathes can be so expensive that I'm not sure what to go with.
@Geiserwoodturner

Thanks! My best advice is to find a woodturner in your area an see if you can try it out. If you are in the US check out the American Association of Woodturners to find chapters in your area. As far as lathes go … the more you learn about them you will know what is good and what you like about them. Check out my video on “What lathe should I buy”. It’s not specific to certain brands but talks a lot about features to help you decide.

So when I did the chisel part all mine did was skip or take out big chunks. Most I was able to do was round it a little bit to make finger spots
@Geiserwoodturner
@Geiserwoodturner 2 жыл бұрын
It can be different depending on the hardness of the wood. Try a freshly sharpened chisel with the bevel down. You actually do only take off little bits at a time until you get to your desired depth. You can also try using a sander to put facets in it so it looks hand carved. Hope that helps.

Nice wand! quite simple but beautiful design. The burnt parts of the handle makes the wand pop. Well done. Sir is that an Australophetecus figurine in your woodturning toolrack behind you? (05:39 ) Greettings from Germany.

Thank you! This wand is one of my favorites and I hope it is being put to good use!😁 As for my figurine ...... (you are the first to mention something about it!) Some think that he is the North American version of Gigantopithecus. Either way he is legendary and hard to see. He leaves much evidence walking around my shop leaving giant footprints in the sawdust! ❤️🇩🇪
