#appliedarchaeometallurgy #ancientmetallurgy It is toolmaking time. Probably one of the most rewarding activities every craftsman indulges in - as it helps him to economize on production time, without sacrificing the quality of his product.
This is about the production of a special tool for the spigot or tap makers of the late Middle Ages. No one knows this tool from finds, nor do the sources tell us anything about it. But there are contemporary pictures. These are the basis for this reconstruction.
Archaeometallurgy is more than just finding out from which mine a particular metal may have come from, or how iron was made from bog ore. It does really encompass quite a lot of aspects of a metal craft. Also, a reconstruction of a process or a tool should not only work in theoretically! So, only writing about it is not enough (: This is why I have this channel: My archaeological reconstruction should work in real life as well!

Thanks for the insight into your techniques. Quite nice to see how you work with brass. As former "Goldschmied" I appreciate such techniques to create your own tools even more.

Many thanks for your kind words; and yes making your own specialised tools is a reward in itself!

Thanks! It is a matter of perspective, the tool you see in the film is a reconstruciton from the sources we have. There are no (identified) reamers as yet in the archaological record. But there are large reamers in the from dunf founding. I will make a video on that in the future (gunn founding and boring)

Du kannst so ein Werkzeug herstellen. Das ganze gleicht einem Bleistifftanspitzer. Du hättest ja auch schon das Werkzeug dass innere des neuen Werkzeugs plan zu senken.

If I may ask did you make that giant and incredibly corse file?

@ArchaeometallurgieDe 2 жыл бұрын
Well, no. Unfortunately I do not have the machine to make these. We call them Armfeile "arm file" and they are excellent for roughing.

whatabout brazing the wedge into place
@ArchaeometallurgieDe
@ArchaeometallurgieDe 5 жыл бұрын
As the wedge is needed to lock the blade in place it would not make so much sense. And if your brazed the blade in place, you'd anneal the the blade and lose its hardness. It it was HSS you could do that. However in the 15th century there is not yet HSS, even it is a rather old fashioned material today (;
