cool! I did a DIY reamer using cheap Lowes 'tool steel'... pretty much did what you did, but I run mine on my lathe, for making Uilleann pipe chanters(sub-amateur/hobbyist))

Oh cool! Cutting tool steel with tool steel sounds hard so I guess it’s good one was cheap. Have you made any chanters with it yet?

That's sweet. I was looking into conical reamers but they seem to be pretty heavily engineered. I know traditional flat reamers are used a lot in flute making. Do you think having two cutting edges on each side would be excessive?

Thanks! When I was using this one, it had a tendency to bind up if I went too aggressive with it. Steady controlled turns with gentle downward pressure and frequently clearing of chips seemed to be the way to go. So I would think that two edges would be even more likely to bind up and require even gentler pressure and I think it might just be more aggravating to use. I never tried a two edge reamer but I suspect that if they worked better they’d be the norm.

Were you able to make a playable chanter with this tool?

Yes! I think. My biggest problem is that I don’t really play bagpipes so when I run into trouble playing, I don’t know if it’s trouble with the chanter, the reed or the user. I also made the chanter so it has the same fingering as Native American Style Flute, which adds another layer of complexity. Here’s a video: kzfaq.infogXtPz-YYL5Y?si=cLYAUsRvLpLvU4iV Please excuse the terrible fake Irish accent. I probably had one too many Guinness when I posted that video haha.

@@lucassoutherton hard to know from a video but it may be just your reed being finicky, or it could be due to the wall thickness of the chanter. I want to try making a highland pipes chanter in Bb out of locust wood, but I'm dreading buying one chanter just to cut it down the middle and copy the profile.
