Awesome! I would do this if I wanted to save space for my compost pile. My grandpa always had a good sized area near the garden for composting. It wasnt even a heap, just flat ground. He left a shovel near it. We would go outside, scoop a portion of dirt out, then drop all the scraps from dinner in the hole and cover it up. Every couple weeks he would till the area. He had the same compost area for 40 years and that was the richest soil I have ever personally seen!

i've been procrastinating on doing this because I was thinking I'd need drainage pipe and caps because that's all I've seen people using. It never occurred to me to just use discarded containers with lids. Now I have a reason to clean all the empty peanut butter jars in my fridge. Thanks!
@dominicdeluca6378Ай бұрын
I have an open jar of peanut butter in my cabinet from before your comment and it's still good. No need to refrigerate.

Nice tip! Helps with the kitchen waste during summertime, i have no problem filling my bins 😂. This would give me some extra place. Most garden waste i throw down as mulch unless its some kind of weed with seeda or the tendency to reroot itself.

if you have a large raised bed, you can use 5 gal buckets from Home Depot. They sell lids for them as well.
@martinjakob90813 жыл бұрын
@@KhangStarr Sadly we don't have Home Depot over here in Switzerland😅 But I have access to 15l food grade buckets. Sadly only with snap on lid, screw would be better i guess. But they are free. Also perfect kratky material

Do you have worms composting in the buckets and spreading it throughout the raised garden bed or do you have to scoop it out and spread yourself?
@diannemarcinizyn21995 ай бұрын
This is exactly what I came looking for so thank you! I’m just starting my first garden. Do you ever remove the compost to spread it or does it simply move out of the bottom and into the bed? Thanks!!

Thanks again for sharing your ideas and experience, I have a question though, since it is gonna be a plastic container, can one use something not so transparent as the one on your video? Like protein powder 3L container which is black or blue ? it's kind of foodsafe ...
@KhangStarr3 жыл бұрын
Yes, definitely. The protein powder container will actually work better.

I put one coffee can worm bed in a 4x8 raised bed last year. When I turned the soil this spring, there was so much worm casting under the surface near that worm bed that it glistened in the sun.

coffee can?
@jmakc35413 ай бұрын
@@thegreatest3651 "Can." The 33.9oz plastic Folgers containers with a snap-on lid. I just drill 1/2" holes all thru them, de-burr the holes, bury them 7/8 deep and then make layered compost beds inside with peat moss, shredded paper/cardboard, coffee grinds and bio refuse. Dump a couple containers of red wigglers on top and close it up. Works like a charm and they don't need much refuse to thrive. Did 3 of them this year in same bed.

Hi Khang Do you just keep adding or at some point do you empty? How do you spread the compost across the bed? Or is that not necessary?
@mylena30863 жыл бұрын
I asked myself the same question
@redtobertshateshandles3 жыл бұрын
No need. The peppers roots will reach out.
@daviddixon28723 жыл бұрын
So does that mean this method is only appropriate for growing peppers and you wouldn’t use this for a lettuce bed, for example?

@KhangStarr7 күн бұрын
Every once in a while you need to water the container. Keeping moisture in there helps break down the material faster.

Noticed that some of the compost containers are in containers (lol). When do you add worms into those containers, or are you just relying on it composting down?
@KhangStarr3 жыл бұрын
It's tough to add worms to containers in Texas as it gets too hot and the soil dries out too quickly. It works well in my raised beds.
@evilroyslade249111 ай бұрын
A benefit not mentioned is the worms are in with your plants and that will also condition the soil around the plastic container.
