A few thoughts. Thought 1, is if the blades were vertical, the bubbles would flow to the top faster. By separating from your plates, your plates once again come in contact with your electrolyte and can begin making the next bubble. Second thought is about voltage efficiency. The ideal voltage is between 2 and 2.5 volts, as you drop down below that voltage the production drops off. As you raise above ideal, you still get more bubbles, but, in addition, more heat is produced. The further away from ideal, give you less and less efficiency. If you have 5 volt source, you should use a neutral plate (plenty of google explanations). So, plate 1 is positive, plate 2 is not attached to anything, plate 3 is negative, then repeat. The 5 volt total difference is broken down to two separate segments of 2.5 volts. Obviously your goal is not to make the most effective industrial grade tool, but, with very minor tweaks to your design you can improve efficiency. Since there are fewer connections, its actually slightly less work as a side benefit.
@DwightWilbanks
@DwightWilbanks 7 жыл бұрын
3rd thought is about safety. Flow the bubbles through an additional container, so in the event of an explosion that does travel up your tube, the explosion will be contained before entering your bigger container with potentially more hydrogen and oxygen in them. 4th, place the metal plates at the bottom of the water. Will eliminate the need to refill as often.

You should NEVER do that using a glass container: you'll end up with an explosive mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in that container, so you have quite an important likelihood of a backfire that will make the container explode. If it is made of glass, the explosion will cause glass shrapnel, which can be deadly. (a colleague of mine took a glass shrapnel to the throat a few months ago, and almost died of what was otherwise a very minor explosion) Plastic is much safer for this.
@itzmistz
@itzmistz 8 жыл бұрын
wouldn't the backfire be contained inside the plastic bottle? I don't see any way it would make it all the way to the glass jar
@piranha031091
@piranha031091 8 жыл бұрын
Itzmist the bit of silicone tubing going to the glass jar passes right through the big hydrogen/oxygen bubble in the plastic bottle. If that detonate, I wouldn't trust too much that weak silicone tubing to resist it and keep its content from detonating too. And placing explosive mixtures in glass containers in general is a bad idea. Backfire is only one way this can go wrong, there's also the risk of having a short between the electrodes, etc...

he added salt, so instead of hydrogen+oxygen it makes hydrogen+chlorine gas+sodium-hydroxide. The second stage converts the chlorine gas into hydrochloric acid and the sodium-hydroxide will heat the water. It's why the water looks so yellow in the introduction. Outside of drinking the water, pouring it on your eyes, or huffing the minute amount of chlorine gas that escapes, handling the razor blades are the most dangerous part.
@piranha031091

Shadi2 Making chlorine as the majoritary product of your electrolysis requires pretty much saturated NaCl. Regardless, hydrogen & chlorine is just as explosive as hydrogen & oxygen.

I would make it to generate the hydrogen and oxygen to separate sections to be mixed at the tip. - Just like a real oxy/acetylene torch. Sodium carbonate might be better electrolyte. I thought of making a setup with the carbons from batteries such that the container would float and when certain amount of gas is generated the carbons would be lifted out of the electrolyte. The weight of the containers would provide pressure .... etc. Your setup could blow up pretty easily.

Thanks man. I've been looking for a good scaled down model of this to build. It's a weird science because technically, you could have stuck the metal rod at the end directly into the power supply to make it glow red. It's making large amounts that we need. Can you now use a 12 volt bicycle pump to compress the hydrogen into a container, for use say, on in small motors or explosions ?

1. What you are generating is a mixtureo use of H2 + 02 in a 2:1 voluminar ratio. 2.For pure Hydrogen gas, you have to use a bottle with caustic soda solution into which aluminium pieces are added. This arrangement will work giving good volumes of gas at low pressure. However, be careful to avoid flame. Once I had an explosion, when I was experimenting as a kid. The bottle burst and corrosive alkali was splattered around the house. The Aluminium gets converted into a highly viscous gelatinous salt called sodium-meta-aluminate. 3. I wish you come up with a design that separates the cathode and anode using some membrane that can withstand temperatures of 100 degrees + because at higher currents the water heats up as well. 4. You must not put a great deal of salt in the water. A pinch of salt in 1 litre is more than sufficient for conduction. If you use more salt, you are actually generating Hydrogen along with chlorine at the anode. The water will turn alkaline as the sodium ions will react with water to form NaOH. The chlorine will generate at anode and corrode the electrode. So you have to use carbon electrodes.

Washing soda can also be used and it's much safer than NaOH or KOH. Especially if the solution is hot. Hot caustic soda solution literally obliterates anything organic almost instantly.

yes your absolutely correct I use to do the same thing. use plastic soda bottle fill half way with water and carefully using funnel put in 1 tbls lye or sodium hydroxide it may get warm so have a bath of cold water on hand to cool it off then crumple up small pieces of aluminum foil about 10 put them all in then make sure the lip of the bottle is clean and dry stretch balloon over neck and watch it inflate with hydrogen you may want to hold the Ballon neck till inflated. it is a good idea to blow up the Ballon beforehand to stretch it.

well,it's not. It's a hydrogen and chlorine generator. The solution in the first jar where the blade stack is in is salt water, the electrolysis generates mixture of hydrogen and chlorine gas. While in the tall bottle the chlorine gas dissolves and reacts with water, leave only hydrogen gas to the needle. Without the water bottle in the middle, the whole thing would explode.

Awesome work. This is inspirational for me to make something like that. Would be great to make a soldering iron for using in soldering microchips or as a hot air gun that does not directly connect to electricity. Adding too much salt will make your flash-arrestor (clean water bottle) build up HCl eventually. There is clearly Sodium colloidals that would be making NaOH on your electrolysis jar. A drop of lime or vinegar instead would also help the electrolysis while slowing any discoloration due to waste chemical build up - since those are organic acids; which are slow to react since they are large molecules. Just my two cents.. Simply, I think you have put a little too much salt to the jar.

This is not a safe setup. It generates hydrogen & oxygen together. In the wrong concentration hydrogen & oxygen together is extremely explosive. Fair enough if you want to generate hydrogen, but you need to do it with an apparatus that separates the hydrogen & oxygen. Mixing the two is stupid in the extreme...
@denism8494

that is what the second bottle is for. The gas bubbles through the liquid and if the hydrogen explodes and goes up the tube it does not go right into where it is being produced, but instead is stopped at the second water bottle.

I made something similar back in 2009-early 2010 for a junior high science project, the thing is that back in the day info about hydrogen plants, energy and generators was scarce, you can do the exact same thing with a plastic mayonnaise jar and cap instead of a glass and metal one (it's cheaper and decays slower), as a source of electrolysis I plugged a car battery into two graphite rods (carbon bars are better but also more expensive), in the case of the sealant I noticed that hot glue, wood glue and other silicone materials decay a lot faster (especially because of the salt), so my dad suggested a stronger compound that resist oxidation and exposure to salt, so we ended up using "scuba goo" a compound that resist salt, water, oxidation, pressure and even hydrocarbons like gasoline. in case you're wondering what we used as a pipe to acumulate the gas, we used a small cooper gas tubbing.

+Anderson Pyaban incorrect. Neat hydrogen can't power an internal combustion engine or electricity generator it's used as a secondary fuel to make the mixture of gas and atomised fuel in the cylinder more volatile. This means engines can run leaner and still run at a healthy rate of complete combustion.

the water in the bottle does not filter the chlorine gas.. you still get chlorine gas mixed with the hydrogen, which is why I would never ever use tablesalt for that.. use some baking soda instead to provide electrolytes for the bubbling solution.. much safer and absolutely no more hassle than using salt

Dont store it if made using this method. This method produces hydrogen and oxigen (HHO, two dihydrogen molecules and one dioxigen molecule from two water molecules) to store it you would need a electrolysis cell with the anode and cathode separated, then run the hydrogen and oxigen through a catalytic convertor to make the small amounts of the other gass (oxigen in the hydrogen hose, hydrogen in the oxigen hose) react and form water, then run the gasses throught a dessicator (Silica gel, CaCl2, NaOH, etc) to remove the water and then you can safelly compress it. This is because water cant be compressed, so it would mess up your tank, and if you let the hydrogen and oxigen in the same tank, they can react causing an explosdion. Also if you use NaCl, if the voltage is too high, you will generate Cl2, something you do not want to happen, so using NaOH is better.

hydrogen by itself cant explode! H2 ---> H2 | 2 H2 + 02 --> 2 H2O you cant burn (oxidize) anything without oxygen. the 33% of oxygen in the gas mixture helps the reaction to go faster, than with the oxygen in the air. of course it explodes, because hydrogen is highly flamable. why do you think he lets the gas mixture run through water before burning it? it is only the velocity of the gas and the "nozzle" wich keeps the flame from going inside the tube and the bottle :)

Do you know how to avoid explosions in plastic bottle? I think to add one hole in bottle that closes and opens. When I will finish my work, I will just open it and air will go inside bottle what will itself shut down fire... What do you think?

Made one of these for my highschool science fair about six years ago. It worked, yes. However my principle wasn't too fond of the idea of having a hydrogen bomb in his cafeteria.......I was almost expelled to say the least >.< I made another one for a county fair demonstration two years ago. At the end, I explained why you shouldn't make one and engaged a pre-created short in the system and it exploded violently enough that the metal shed it was in exploded and the windows on a minivan 100ft away shattered. Don't make one unless you want to die or know EXACTLY what you're doing.
6 жыл бұрын
Well hydrogen bomb works on different principles -- here you get "Brown gas" which although an explosive but has nothing even close to "hydrogen bomb". "Hydrogen bomb" requires to squeeze atoms so close that starts "fusion reaction" which is very volatile produces temperatures close to the center of the sun and releases enormous amount of energy.

kael starwynd I am 15 years old and a similar thing happened to me, I was making this with glass jars, and I knew that you shouldn't have much space between the level of water and the top of the jar of the bubbler so that there wouldn't be much gas in there in case that the fire gets inside the bubbler (I had about a centimeter of space) , but when I fired the flame, at first it worked for a few seconds but then the flame got in the bubbler and that little bit of gas that was in there was enough to blow the sealed metal top of the jar off with a loud BANG and bend it! my mom rushed in screaming and said every single curse word that she knows of, but I was ok. THANKFULLY I didn't have much gas in the top of the bubbler, otherwise the glass jar could've exploded shattering glass everywhere... I'm not going to make this again until I recover from this traumatic experience, and until I learn more about this setup.
