*Don't put salt in it* - it'll break to sodium and to *chlorine gas* (thtle yellowish-greenish shade of the water 5:25) If you want to get *pure hydrogen* , use *baking soda* instead. ☺😊 In any case - great video 👍

With salt as the electrolyte, you're also creating sodium hypochlorite, highly toxic. Also, the second bottle needs to be filled higher otherwise it's basically a giant bomb. With HOD (hydrogen on demand) systems, there are no resivoir which would become a point to detonate if the system were to suffer a backflash. With that crucible being glass, you've basically made a grenade, fill that bottle higher and make the tube to which the hydrogen flows out much shorter to prevent any dire situations.

Buzz LightBeer That's right but some of the chlorine escapes the cell. In addition to that, it also creates hypochlorous acid (HClO) which is a nasty oxidizer. It further reacts with the NaOH formed in solution to make NaClO aka bleach which is safer and you can find a purpose for it lol.

Notice that even if you use non chloride electrolyte, the gas you get in your bottle is not exactly hydrogen but a stoechiometric mix of dioxygen and dihydrogen (1 part over two). So it could explode in the bottle by itself if you give it the condition...

Just a little precision! This type of electrolysis produces H2 (cathode) and O2 (anode), so it's not pure H2 at the end of the circuit. I understand that the bottle of pure water filters O2 (until saturation) but after that a mix of both gases goes through the tube. As long as I remember this type also produces chlorine gas wich can be harmfull.

this is NOT an hydrogen generator. to get the hydrogen thou need to isolate both side. this is an HHO gas generator(brown's gas) with chlorine in it. NEVER accumulate this gas it is very dangerous. you can activate it with 12v in a car and run the gas right into the air intake and save alot on gasoline but thou need to change the metal used in the generator. go with stainless steel because the oxygen side will oxide in minutes. the best is 7 stainless plates with a neutral one between the + & - . more than that will be to much for nothing, it will not produce more gas and less than that will produce heat and you dont want that.

well the oxygen is mixed with hydrogen in the bottle and if someone were to try and use that as a kind of an torch it might light the inside of the bottle and i guess in the worst case may cause the (possibly already fractured) bottle to explode and cause some serious damage to someone who is not being careful

just fyi that gold coating on those screws is either cadmium or zinc dichromate, either of which is super toxic and heating either makes some nasty gasses that you don't want to be breathing. you'll probably survive this time, but don't make a habit out of it, and maybe don't tell your million viewers that it's safe. the chlorine gas everyone is talking about is jack shit compared to that cadmium coating. don't heat the stuff and don't grind it off. the only safe way to remove it is acid, or find some stainless screws instead.

Your cell is making chlorine mixed with the hydrogen. This is a very explosive mixture, and if a spark occurs inside the bottle, the bottle could be shattered by the explosion. You need separate gas collectors over the cathodes/anodes to keep the 2 gases separate. If you use sodium sulfate instead of salt, you will have less corrosion of the cell and you will get oxygen mixed with the hydrogen instead of chlorine.

You forgot a word in the title - how to NOT make,,,, Soldering is bad, the iron is to small to heater the solder enough to make safe connections on the screws, The soldering has to be shiny not dull like yours. Diameter of the wire is to small and using saltwater is just idiotic. For your simple water electrolysis is normal water enough.

And also what happens to Na ? Also, I've tried this, and noticed that one of the electrodes reduces in size, is it also taking part in rxn ? What the hell is happening there ?? Plz explain anyone. Thnx

H2O is broken into H2 and O2 . At the same time salt (NaCl) is broken into Na and Cl2. Na quickly reacts with H2O to make NaOH and more H2, so is never really generated. The result is a mixture of H2, O2 and Cl2. You cant really see the chlorine though, because it is too diluted. The anode (the dissolving electrode) reacts with oxygen and chlorine to form that greenish-brownish thing floating in the jar (probably iron oxide and chloride)

Seeing a lot of wrong comments on the products here. To clear things up: 1- HCl or chlorine gas isn't really produced. Instead electrolysis of brine produces sodium chlorate and hypochlorate (bleach). In situ, the generated chlorine will react with hydroxide and sodium. If you want to make NaOH solution and chlorine gas, the electrodes need to be separated by a semi-permeable membrane. Only the combustion of H2 and Cl2 will yield HCl from the previously mentioned method.

I mean 5:58 and you're effectively blown apart. And in general: 1. you must be an idiot to make this kinda stuff out of the glass 2. This one-way valve is bullshit 3. Don't light up hose containing h and o in the best to explode proportions. I'd not recomend you to do this even with pure h but mixture with o - youre deadman.

i was just smart enough to add one so it wasn't the actual generator that blew up.if i didn't add the extra tank the ending would have been a lot different :)

firstly, it's not a hydrogen generator, but two-hydrogen-oxygen generator, and the resulting gas mixture is highly explosive, so beware. (perhaps there is a much less oxygen-to-hydrogen ratio due to the following...) secondly, normal screws will rust quite quickly; for electro-hydrolysis you would want to use platinum electrodes, so they don't react with the oxygen produced. cheers!

The bubbles are filled not only with Hydrogen but also with Oxygen (2 :1 by count of atoms & 2 : 16 by weight) and the mixture of gases is very much explosive. All viewers are requested to take preventive measures while preparing the mixture of the said gases.

Pls people, be wise, dont do this. The produced hydrogen is worthless and cannot be used to drive anything (as stuff that uses hydrogen, selden to never uses the plain gas), it will cost more electricity to make hydrogen then you'll ever get energy out of it, and doing it in the way as done in this movie, is just plain right dangerous. First off, all those solderings are bad. You can't solder on those screws. You can see the wire is enveloped in solder, but not soldered. Furthermore, when he switches on, there's 4 A running. He's lucky nothing happened then. The used wiring in combination with bad solder joints, could have caused enough heat or even spark/flames to light the hydrogen. Last but not least; the way he drills a hole in that cap, is asking for trouble. In short: DONT DO THIS. And if you want to make hydrogen, fine, but NOT IN THIS WAY. Do NOT reproduce anything out of this movie.
