A couple of observations...1. dont glue a craft stick to the bottom of a tile to level it. The moisture from the grout will rot it eventually if its outside and it will pop off. She didnt say sanded/nonsanded, but if its outside you need to use sanded or it wont hold up. If you want to make your own instead buying the stepping stone, use ready mix MORTAR not concrete unless you want the rough finish (follow mortar instructions to mix). Line any mold you use with plastic wrap and nonstick spray and it will come right out. Then you just embed your pieces into the mortar and dont have to deal with the glue...sometimes you dont even have to grout if you dont want to have to do that. There are tons of options
@TheEmrotti
@TheEmrotti 6 жыл бұрын
yes, I do the mortar option, but it is kind of hard to place the design on top of it. With the glued option, is more controlled. you can perfectly make the design on top of the stepping stone and take your time to glue it and once the glue dries, you put the grout. With the mortar, I have to make the design on the table and move it to the container with the mortar, IMO, the mortar dries too fast so I have only a few minutes to do this, so its never perfect to move the design from the table to the shape with mortar. You could also do the mortar option, dry it in a circular shape, maybe embedded some pieces and later finished it with the other pieces glued on the top. a combination of both techniques.

Great Video but I would like to offer a few suggestions: Quick set and sanded grout is best for outdoor use. You would need to cover the entire backside of each piece with the quick set. The pieces would otherwise absorb the moisture from the concrete stone as it is porous and will absorb and hold moisture. You can also use a bit more of the quick set on the one side of a piece that would have a gap, therefore eliminating the need for the piece of craft stick that would probably rot and cause that piece to come off

Whew!! I love it! I am looking for a Grandmother/mother's Day present to do with my kids. They will be watching this before we do anything! I love the idea of garage sales for their unique plate to use. I also really appreciate that it does not seem like a too complicated process. Thank you for keeping the video short, sweet, and to the point.

If you want to glue and grout the embellishments in, you just need to pick pieces that can withstand the grouting process and weather the elements. Keep in the mind that with the sanded grout, plastic pieces can sometimes get roughed up through the grouting process.

True that buying mosaic stepping stone kits might be a little more expensive than the method that you demonstrate. However, by 'embedding' the tesserae or casting them into the mortar as it sets, you make a unit that has much more integrity, structurally. This means that you can expect the stepping stone to last for a very long time, withstanding frosts outdoors. With my kits, the mould provided is re-usable so people can learn the method and then make a full set of stepping stones for their garden or community space.

The technique are describing is often how they make stepping stones that come in the kits you find in the craft store. That technique is not considered "mosaic" and is not grouted. The pieces are only embedded. You have a lot more control of the exact placement of the design when you do mosaic in the traditional manner with gluing and then grouting.
