How to Make a Motorcycle fender (Part 4):
Wray starts off by shrinking the rear of the fender where the ducktail is using the torch and a body hammer. Once he has the ducktail where he wants it to be, Wray takes the panel to the planishing hammer and planishes the shrunk area. He noticed the peak in the front is a little off so he brings the fender to the english wheel and removes the peak and then marks the correct location back onto the fender. He brings the fender to the tipping wheel, using low pressure in the beginning and slowly increasing it as he moves further along. Once this is complete Wray decides to have the fender come to a point in the front and back, grinds away excess material and voila.

I was kind of wondering about that - the initial rolling video made it look like the line was crooked - turns out that's because it was.

That fender would work nicely on a pre-WWII sports car, something with skinny tyres on wire wheels.

Looking good. Great Job. I'm doing fenders on a trailer while watching you. They are looking good but hard to do in one piece on the English wheel. I have a planishing hammer but the fenders are too big to manage so I'm getting it done with a dolley and slapper. My next dual axle trailer I'm going to do them in pieces and weld them together. Still learning at 70 years old. Thank you for all your help.

Thank you for your channel and sharing your skills with the world. Between you, Lazze and Ron (the first three I would think of) there is so much info to learn how to do it yourself. Thank you. I was wondering if there was a part 5 made that finished off the fender? That would be great. This is what is sparking up my interest again in sheetmetal forming!

Wray, did you ever do anything else with this fender? This video series spurred me to start buying body tools and machines. I need to build a fender just like that for a '67 Triumph Bonneville chopper I am building for my Father... and then a rear to match! Incredible work. I always kinda knew what went into this, but never to this level of detail. Watching you walk through the process really turned the light on. Thanks so much!

Hey Wrey. Cool videos. Just a thought...there are nearly 500k Honda CT 90 and CT 70 (Trail) owners out there. I'll bet if you make a cool front flareed fender like what you made, and give it away (to a lucky subscriber) you would hit an easy 100k views in 1 month, probably huge boost in subscriptions. Tires are size 17. Just a thought. You hooked me in with your moded English Wheel from Harbor Freight. Loved watching your series on that fender. You're an amazing crafts man. BTW...Great camera work cameraman!

Thanks for the great info as always. You being the man behind making so many machines, have you ever experimented with making an electric planishing hammer from a electric hammer drill? Do you think it would hit too hard? Thanks again, Love the videos

Excellent series on making a motorcycle mudguard exactly just what I need to know I have a '50s British motorcycle and need to make a fender with ducktail, centre line and edge bead in a single piece. Would there be a problem to make the shape then the ducktail then the centre peak then a side flange, the peak line and finally the edge bead?

What do you think about a aluminum speed boat project? Kind of like the "bat boat" lots of curves . That way you can use all these shaping projects for a common purpose?🤔 Plus it would be COOL !

Why is there no sense in have a bowl stump or a gradual depth shrinking stump? And how does a shrinking facilitator take its place? I understand it how it would be useful in a production sense if you are making a lot of the same part but would it not get time consuming to make different one for almost every different panel that comes in?

Hey Wray, I have a couple of 2.5' lengths of dock bull rail that I would like to use as stumps but they are softwood (fir). Will that work okay? Also, what is that rubber electrical tape looking stuff you line the stumps with?
@proshaper
@proshaper 3 жыл бұрын
You can also make the shrinking facilitator out of end grain short wood scraps. The rubber coating protects the wood and holds the panels. The rubber coating has a self adhesive on the back , it is called EPDM. You will find it at your local roofing supplier.

Wray, is that 19 gauge mild steel? Looking really nice. My assistant and I want to build Cycle Karts (we have a lot of enthusiasts in our area). I want to build a Voisin (no compound curves) and he wants a Kart with cycle fenders. I'm not diabetic but I have the same issue. At first when I started getting it, I just thought my feet were asleep so I'd take off my boots and rub them and they were better. But then it began to not go away and early on extreme pain in waves. Now just numb toes and balls of my feet. Idiopathic and no viable treatment.
