Wow that was really impressive! I've never worked with fiberglass before but this is exactly what I was looking for. If I attempted a one piece front end like this as my first fiberglass project would I be way in over my head, or do you think it's doable? haha

At this moment I’m happy that I found your Chanel 3years from part 1 of this video 😅 Nevertheless great job. Question is how much weight saving you got in kg in comparison to metal/plastic front?

Are you applying the same resin for the Kevlar material? Thank you so much for making all of your videos! I actually wish they were a little bit slower... try not to fast forward so fast LOL. Fantastic workmanship! Keep up the great work!

I hate to keep pestering you. Okay. I’m building a Mustang. You have sent my mind running with using fiberglass and Kevlar as structural pieces. The Mustang was beat to hell and the rockers on both sides crushed. After a lot of hours with a slide hammer I’ve got one side back in shape. I put down two layers of 7 ounce Kevlar from front to back wrapped around that rocker. In your opinion is that enough? It certainly feels strong.

Music police aside, glad to see you and the family are at least upright and breathing! Hoping the bush fires subside soon bill, it’s beyond unfortunate the gov isn’t making fighting them easy. Quick question about your layup process on the front end: (I apologize if you answered this in the video as I know how much you like to repeat yourself) when laying the carbon and Kevlar into the fiberglass component, do you use an epoxy resin for the carbon/Kevlar and then GP polyester resin for the fiberglass? Or all GP resin throughout the entire layup? Thank for all you do teaching us sir, you’re a legend 👌
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 4 жыл бұрын
One of the myths in the composite lay up world is that you can ONLY use poly resins with fiberglass cloth, and that you can ONLY use epoxy resins with carbon fiber or Kevlar. Normally that is what you use for each, but on some jobs you CAN mix those products. When laying up the fiberglass in this front clip I use poly resins, but to get the greatest strength between that lay up and the Kevlar reinforcing the two materials need to be wet laid as one, so the Kevlar gets laid into and is saturated with the poly resin of that main lay up. I could have done the same with the carbon fiber feature panels, but for greatest surface clarity there I chose to use epoxy resin on those features because paint wasn't going over them and using poly resin would have left discoloration. So in those spots I laid up the CF and let it set. Then I over laid the main fiberglass with poly resin. You can't mix poly & epoxy resins when wet because they are chemically incompatible, but the three cloths CF, Kevlar & f/glass can be inter mixed in the one lay up. There have been other jobs where I have laid fiberglass csm using only epoxy resin. All resins work with all cloths. You can step outside conventional practice when needs be.

Greetings from America. Thank you for another great video. I watched both parts and learned a lot . I also took notes . I want to use a polyurethane front bumper on a car that it's not made for . I need to shorten the polyurethane bumper in a few places and also make it taller. Can you please recommend one of your videos on how to do this ? I looked through your library of videos and I didn't find one . I'm sure I overlooked it I want to know how to bond two pieces of polyethylene with fiberglass and how to make the bumper wider using fiberglass. I'm assuming I will use the bumper as a die when finished. I am a beginner and I'm learning as I go. Thank you again for posting these great informative videos . Best Regards

Fiberglass will not permanently bond with smooth metal or plastic surfaces, so you can't just chop & glue your bumper. What you need to do is sculpt it into a die/plug, then make a fiberglass mold of the whole thing (maybe 2 - piece mold depending on it's shape), then make the final copy to go on your car in that mold. Three stage process that many try to shortcut with bad results & (in the end) even more labour. I've been having internet troubles (no service people travelling in the pandemic), so apologize for the late response. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fMCFmKynnprLhKs.html

No expert here. During the final piece creation, and the steps prior to putting all 4 moulds together while tacky. Is time and temperature critical?
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. To slow the hardening of the fiberglass the minimum 1% catalyst is used, and a cool or rainy day chosen for the layup. In hot times I'd either start at dawn, or do the layup at night after things cool down. In normal weather conditions layup resin takes around 60 minutes to start to tack, and then you have another 30-60 minutes before it fully sets in which to overlay the pieces together. I haven't had any problems time wise doing that - but picking the right air temp is the key. Depending on the front bodyshape you can do the layup in just two stages with the 4 molds all bolted together as I did here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l6-Dh5Ca3dHHhI0.html

Can you do a video on the latching and operation of the flip up boney?
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 4 жыл бұрын
Not really needed. I used the factory bonnet hinges and laid in the mounting plates for them when I made the front clip. Two bonnet pins above the headlights and another pair on the lower back edge near each door are needed as well. What I did find is that the rear of the flared guards catch on fat front tires when you raise the front clip, which is why I now make them as a three piece unit, with the panels either side near the door front edges as separate units which are bolted to the car... as shown here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/as9_i5mZr73Ifqc.html
