Make a life mask of your face that you can keep as a memento of how you looked at a certain time in your life. You can also have fun with this mask by painting it, decorating it and hanging it on your wall. Make it scary for a Halloween party, make it tribal, make it Gothic, make it angelic...decorate it how ever you choose! You can even use this technique on doll faces or mannequin heads... Or maybe you'd like a face mask of that statue on the front lawn of your school! ;) HaHa!

A tip to make it less messy is to have the person who's getting the mask lay down while the gauze is being put on their face. This really helped in our case, I did it at a summer camp :)

RoboticZombie27 Thank you! Yes, some people can find it difficult, but so far, I was lucky...non of my students felt claustrophobic. The key is talking to them the whole way through and letting them know everything that you're doing. If they feel trapped, then you should let them know that it's ok to take off the mask right away and they don't have to feel guilty about it. Also it's good to count down how much time is left till you take the mask off. :)

It feels cold and damp, like you have mud on your face. It's not too uncomfortable, unless you have trouble breathing through your nose. It's all over after 15 minutes, so it's ok. :) All of my 10 to 12 year old students did it and none of them panicked or felt the need to take it off, even thought I told them it was totally fine to take it off at any moment if if ever they felt uncomfortable. :)

@TheFuzzyDragon1

What about holes for the eyes? Do you think it would be easy to cut those out the same as cutting the frayed edges? Or to plaster around the eyes in the beginning? Looking to make a mask of my own face, out which the wearer can see..
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
If you want to wear this mask, then you can either avoid the eyes as you make it or cut them out when it's half dry with an exacto knife. Even when it's completely dry, you can still cut the eyes out, but you just have to be extra careful not to cut yourself doing it. I hope your mask turns out great! Have fun! :)

Amazing method! I did this to my own face (not before slathering a large amount of vaseline across it for safety), a little of the vaseline rubbed off onto the inside of the mask. Has anyone else ran into this issue? If so, have you found a way to get vaseline off plaster?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Vaseline will always get into the inside part of your mask. You can add a few more strips of plaster on the inside to cover it up. You can also use strips of paper towels and glue them on with a paint brush and a mixture of watered down white glue (like paper mache). You don't need much, just a thin layer. All you really want to do is cover up the Vaseline. I hope these suggestions will help you out. :)

THIS WAS SO COOL!!!!!! But is there a way that if I made one if these that I can smoothen out the front part of the mask so it isn't all rough to paint on?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much. If you sand it a little bit, it van help smooth it down. If not, then you can put a thin coat of plaster on it and when it dries, then you can sand it down a little bit to remove some of the rough edges. I hope this helps. :)

small question would the jelly be suitable for beards in the process? asking for a friend.
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 6 жыл бұрын
I've never done this mask to anyone with a beard, but my guess is that you can get away with it if you really make sure all the hairs are completely covered with the petroleum jelly. It's better to put more then not enough in that area of your face. If you do get some plaster stuck in the hairs, you can always remove it with warm water. It will come off easily. Let me know if you ended up trying it and if it worked. Good luck! :)

@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can try replying plaster strips on the inside so you don't change the shape of your face and maybe give is a coat of glaze to protect it. I have to be honest though. I'm not an expert at this. I just do this for fun with my students as an art project. You can go to your local art supply store and ask them for advice. They are very educated about the products that they sell and can help you out. Most of the sellers have studied in art school and are very knowledgeable about these kinds of projects. I hope this helps a little. I'm sorry I couldn't help you more. :)

What should I do if I want to cover the nostrils?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
I know I'm very late with my reply. If you want to cover the nostrils, then you have to let the person breath by their mouths. You can either let the person breath with a straw in their mouth or through their nose. You have to make sure they feel comfortable doing this and that they can give you a sigh if they can't breath. You can also do this with the nose open and only cover it once the mask is removed by adding little strips of plaster over the open area.

How do you make a hammerhead shark mask
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
If you want to make a different shaped mask, then I suggest you use a shark photo for inspiration and then ad some shapes to your mask using crumpled aluminium foil, cardboard, plastic lids etc. to build up the structure and shark shape. Then you cover everything with plaster clothes or if you want your mask to be light, then I suggest you use paper mache instead. Look up paper mache masks and you will get an idea of what I'm trying to explain. I hope this helps a little. :) Let me know how it went. Have a nice day! :)

Can you do this with plaster of Paris
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think so. I think it would be very difficult to do this directly on someones face. You would have to make a silicone mold of their face, remove it and then pour the plaster into that mold. It gets more complicated and you would have to spend much more money doing this and do a lot more steps.

That wasn't very nice. Better late then never. I have more then 300 comments that I still need to get to but still I took the time to respond to yours. Not many people on KZfaq take the time to respond to every single comment, but I try my best to get to all of them. I'm sorry that I replied so late to your comment, but I do have a full time job and responsibilities at home.

TheFuzzyDragon1 how about coconut oil, I’m not doing it on someone’s face, I’m doing this on my mound made out of plasticine
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 6 жыл бұрын
I've only done it with vaseline. It might be worth a try. As long as the plasticine doesn't absorb the oil, I guess it should be ok.

Can the same procedures work with clay? Or will it mess up?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
I think it would be very difficult to do it with clay. You would have to remove it right away to let it dry and I don't know if the shape of the face would mess up as you are removing it.

@TheFuzzyDragon1

candyloves2 rave I think if you have your mouth opened it would be difficult for you to hold it that way for at least 10 to 15 minutes. Honestly, I've never made a mask with an open smile before. If you try and succeed at it, then I would suggest adding teeth afterwards with pieces of cardboard that are glued on with hot glue and then cover them with just a thin layer of plaster fabric. I have a suggestion...you can try getting yourself one of those rubber teeth whitening trays so your teeth are able to rest on something and you are less at risk of getting plaster in your mouth. I hope it helps. If all else fails, then you can just make up your own face with cardboard and recycled items and cover everything with plaster fabric. It won't be your own face, but at least you will have that evil face that you are looking for. I hope I was able to help a little. :)

what would happen if you covered her nose too?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
Her head would slowly start to inflate with air and she would start floating away like a balloon thus making it more and more difficult for me to continue working on her not only because the dimensions of her face would keep changing but also because I would have to keep weighing her down. Not to mention that annoying little thing about her not breathing and dying. ;)

Plaster is not something you can 'dry' faster by going in front of a fan or heat. It is a chemical reaction. at first it will get warm and then it will get cold as it sets.
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information. It always seems to dry quicker when I let it dry in front of a fan for some reason. I will have to test it out next time.

Why mask do not have eyes ? :/
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 9 жыл бұрын
michail spyridis Because these masks were made to decorate the walls. By closing the eyes, the kids had a chance to paint them. But if you want to have the eyes open, then you can chose to not put plaster fabric on them or let the mask dry and cut the holes in the shape you choose. Either way is good. It's just a matter of personal preference and what you intend your mask to be used for. :)

Is it dangerous for the skin of the person whose face is being used?
@TheFuzzyDragon1
@TheFuzzyDragon1 4 жыл бұрын
The person has a thick coat of Vaseline, so the skin is protected that way. Also, you are simply placing the strips, you aren't actually rubbing the skin with them. I've done this to many different people and nothing has ever happened. I do avoid doing this to people who have chalk allergies.

Those people? Do you mean those 10 year old KIDS? We aren't experts at making masks (including myself), but we know how to have fun and that's what really matters. In my opinion, they did pretty FANTASTIC considering it was their first time ever and the fact that they had very little material to work with. Have a great day and I hope inspiration comes from within your heart and not from other people's creations.
