When single speed pumps were the only pump options on the market service technicians for pools used to install isolation mats under the pumps which are high density rubber mats and these help to limit pump vibrations through the base. In addition to this a very problematic pool might have rubber couplings or sections of flex PVC installed in the equipment room to try to help isolate the vibrations from the walls and floors where they transmit further to the rest of the living area.
Modernly a variable speed pool pump is the solution for a pump that is too noisy. At lower speeds they are so quiet you can not tell if it is running or not even while standing right next to it. Only at highest speed operation would it be loud like a single speed pump. What most pool owners do not realize is that the pipe size you have (very commonly it will be either 1.5" or 2") through your equipment set will determine the maximum efficiency of your hydraulic system. Laminar flow is water which moves smoothly and without excessive energy losses. When you move water too fast you lose laminar flow and the rate of efficiency loss to friction and turbulence of the water increases logarithmically. Most modern pool pumps will attempt to deliver 80, 100, 120 gallons per minute or more at maximum speed (or single speed) so what is the limit of laminar flow for 1.5" and 2" pipe? Less than you think:
1.5" pipe = 38 GPM
2" pipe = 65 GPM
Everything beyond these numbers that you operate your system will substantially increase the efficiency losses of your pool, but will also account for all that noise that your pool pump is making. Instead, design a 24 hour variable speed pump schedule which remains within the limits of laminar flow at all times - and reduce the noise your pump makes dramatically!
