This video shows how to make a DIY sabiki rig for catching bait that will save you money and time (check out the way we have a replaceable weight at the end of the Sabiki rig).
Best of all, this method allows you to quickly build your own custom sabiki rig so that you can save money in not buying the expensive ones at the store.
And be sure to watch until the end because there's a tip on how you can make the homemade sabiki rig work better than the store-bought kind.
Here's a list of bait fish that a sabiki rig can catch:
- threadfin
- pinfish
- cigar minnows
- croakers
- grunts
- whitebait
- pilchards
- mojarra
- pigfish
Best of all, you can control the size bait you catch by the size of the hook that you use...
Use a larger hook for bigger bait, and shrink everything if you want to catch the small ones too.
Leave a comment below if you have any other tips on how to make custom sabiki rigs.

We have been using this rig at the pier alot. We catch more than enough pinfish. usually end up letting some go or sharing them. The reaction on peoples faces when you reel in 2-3 at a time is priceless.

Thank you for all your instructional videos, great DIY Sabiki rig, I pass by schools of bait fish on my flats boat and sometimes they move so fast that you've missed your chance to net them, this is great because you can grab your rod and flick it right to them. Right on!

Salty Beard Sabiki rods help so much. They hide the hooks and the end of the rod it's self acts as a dehooker. Just grab and go. I tie a snap swivel to the end to I can just clip on the rigs.

Nice tips dude. One thing I have experimented with when fishing for smelt is a small piece of rig foam on the hook next to the eye, it makes the bait balance mid water a bit like a diver but it gives the bait a very natural presentation. One tip for you is don't cut the Gulp put it on the hook and cut it once its on the hook its easier to handle,, tight lines.

Wow this is how I was tought about 50 years ago and we didn't have plastic and used red and white yarn, doubled over in the loop. I still have the pack of yarn my grand ma gave me and caught untold number of squid and other small fish use later as bait. just getting back into fishing after raising family and now wife and I are alone. And I've got time for myself and friends

Hi Luke , I’m enjoying your vids immensely ..Thank you . I believe that I’m an above average fisherman at age 85 .My leg issue is keeping me off the Cape Cod Canal and I’m about to pursue porgies/ flounder..I’m excited about this ..Your method of tying this sabiki rig is the way to go ..although 6” isn’t easy to maintain, but you have to get past that first level..Lastly ,you mentioned damaged grubs ending up in gulp juice . If they sell it separately where may I purchase it ? Thanks again, Bob Peck

Always just referred to these as gold hook rigs back in the day. I guess someone decided to fancy it up with the sabiki name. The greenies where so greedy we could get away with nothing but the gold hooks. Adding bait of any type was great for attracting little dork jacks or runners.

Yes, that works great for making dropper rigs. But the reason I didn't do it in this video is because the sabiki hooks had eyelets that were too small to allow a doubled line to go through them.

Thanks for the kind words Robert! The hook size should be chosen based on the size of the bait that you'll be using. So either 4 or 6 could work depending on how big the tentacles are.
