If you ever wondered what goes into making Dapper Notes, here's the full step-by-step process from fabric roll to packaged notebook. shop.dappernotes.com/products...
Every edition is made a little differently, and I normally do some parts in bulk (like gluing the covers), but this behind-the-scenes should give you a good idea of the details that are considered for each and every Dapper Notes I make.
Edition shown: Summer of Sketching 2018, collab with Eric Friedensohn (@efdot)
Materials used:
Cork cloth
Black book cloth
Archival glue
Yellow chiffon (handmade) paper
70lb smooth white paper with 8%K graph
Black waxed thread
White pigment ink
Embossing Powder
Tools used:
Homemade cutting table
Fiskars rotary cutter
Sable brush
Bone folder
Curved needle
Awl
Custom sewing station template
Mini spring clamps
Homemade sewing cradle
Excel knife
Homemade book press
17" paper shear
Akiles corner rounder
Rubber stamp
Head gun
Canon inkjet printer
Carl rotary trimmer
Hand embosser
Double-sided scotch tape
All Dapper Notes pocket notebooks are hand made from scratch in New Jersey by Enon Avital. Every notebook cover is made from two materials: a good looking fabric on the outside, backed by book cloth inside. These covers are just the nicest, and oh so very showoff-able.

I loved the presentation and background music. I found it refreshing to not listen to narration for a change. Brilliantly done. Thank you for sharing this!

This was mesmerizing! It completely captivated my 5 yr old twins. They held this edition in their hands and followed along as you made each part. Totally counting this as a homeschooling lesson on craftsmanship. Keep up the beautiful work!

My goodness! What amazing care and love goes into making these! It makes me appreciate them all the more having seen this video. I buy mine in the UK from Stuart Lennon and absolutely love them - so unique and so beautiful! I may have to go back and buy the ones I didn’t get before my subscription started. Thank you so much!

I love your DIY press, the way you attached the end of the threads to the board is just perfect :). Where did you get such a threaded rod? I'd love to build my own press some day.

Beautiful project. Q: what reason do you add the outer sleeve with the book facing going from back of book ?
@dappernotes

I'm not sure what you mean, exactly? If it's the belly band you're referring to, that's just packaging.

Beautiful work… which cutter are you using at the ~5:51 minute mark? It seems to have a turnable clamp down to hold the papers while cutting?
@dappernotes
@dappernotes 9 ай бұрын
it's a generic stack cutter (aka guillotine)

is there anything special about the black book cloth? I just tried to buy it at the store and they looked at me like i was crazy, thanks!
@dappernotes
@dappernotes Ай бұрын
It's just bookcloth. Most bookcloths that you'll find in retail stores have a paper backing which is a wee bit harder to work with. You might have better luck at places like Talas or Hollanders

What is the powder? And what kind of thread did you use?
@dappernotes
@dappernotes 3 жыл бұрын
It's an embossing powder, which solidifies with heat. All of the notebooks are made using waxed linen thread.

This would be vastly better with actual narration while you're making these things rather than pointless music. What is the point of the cork for example I have no idea. Also show the finished product first so we know exactly what the goal is.
