How to make a Stained Glass Frame

Framing stained glass is always a challenge I enjoy so I was happy to receive a commission to clean and frame an historic stained glass panel for Fr. Jeff Windy of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bloomington, Illinois.
Dirt from decades of storage had to be carefully removed with a low pH soap so as not to damage any of the detail that gives this panel its unique characteristics.
Then the frame was constructed from reclaimed wood from an antique piano cabinet.
The result is a stable and protective frame that can be deconstructed if the panel needs to be removed in the future.
Questions and comments are always welcomed.

This helped me so much. I have two small panels that have just the metal frame and through the years of hanging them, the metal is stretched so I can no loner hang them. This is what should have been done in the first place. Thanks so much for showing how to repair them and make them useable again.

Your video is very helpful! Thanks for sharing. I was wondering, how thick is the wood you used? What is the depth and width of the grove?
@AndyBirkeyMaker
@AndyBirkeyMaker Жыл бұрын
If I remember correctly, the wood was about an inch and a half by about 2 in and the groove was somewhere around 5/16 of an inch but was very much determined by the lead joints. Thanks for watching!

I have a question...if you need to remove the stained glass panel FROM an existing wooden frame, how should this be done and still salvage the wooden frame? Or would a new frame need to be constructed? Thanks and btw, beautiful job!😊
@AndyBirkeyMaker
@AndyBirkeyMaker 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristy, sorry for the delayed response! It would all depend on the construction of the frame. Good news, it's can be done.....bad news is that it can be a real drag. Message me if you still have questions, I'd be happy to help

What's the process called where you've carved out the groove? I'd like to know what to ask if I was to get some made
@AndyBirkeyMaker
@AndyBirkeyMaker 5 ай бұрын
Well, the actual groove is called a dado, but I've never seen anyone else hand carve the relief for the solder joints. I just kinda did that random style! It could also easily be done with a Dremel rotary tool.... Hope that helps
@w4baham
@w4baham 6 ай бұрын
In this case, how thick of wood did you need/use? Just curious?
@AndyBirkeyMaker
@AndyBirkeyMaker 5 ай бұрын
Oh man, I think it was 1 1/4" thick? It was close to that because I am sure I planed it out of some inch and a half thick stock.

Hello, I have another question? How do you price your work for adding the wooden frame? Thank you 😊
@AndyBirkeyMaker
@AndyBirkeyMaker 2 жыл бұрын
Kristy, that's a great question without a good answer! That is to say...for me it is entirely situational. Small jobs like this are crazy hard to make money on for a working shop, so the hourly rate is out the window. Usually I would say that I think about it in what I need to make for a day. That would include the meetings, delivery, the actual work, everything involved with this job. I know it's not very clear, but just know that it will take longer than you think! I hope this helps a little bit. Cheers!
