Thank you so much for going on this journey with me to make a stamped silver ring! I truly hope you enjoyed this video, and that it was at least somewhat helpful in your road to becoming an incredible metalsmith! If you do follow along, please tag me in your finished result on Instagram! I would be so excited to see your work!
I’m currently working on putting together an Amazon Storefront (or something? Idk). I tried to add all the links to all of the supplies you will need for this project, but it’s too many characters. Check back in a little bit! I will figure out a way to get all of these things linked for you! :)
Ring size chart (I use the 16 gauge column almost always):

I have to leave another comment on how adorable your video is and how accurate is to the way the world is nowadays. I’ve been around this trade for a while and I know pretty much everybody in the jewelry KZfaq world. It’s a great family I’m glad you’re making videos.

Just found you - hurrah. I've been wanting to start on silver work and bought all the stuff and two books and ..... Haven't started. I think "enough" is perfect for me just now, so I'm going to use my empty woohoo Saturday morning having a go. I have a wider strip and 3mm stamps and I'm going to write IKIGAI which is Japanese for balance. Finally I'm going to do it. Thank you so much ❤ capable a.f. ❤

Flux cleans and roughs up the surface so the solder sticks better. You should choose one that's effective at the temperature just before the temp your solder melts at. Different solders need different fluxes.

Hmm, interesting! I’ve been metalsmithing for 10 years or so and I’ve always used one flux for every solder density. Has worked just fine for me! 😊

Does the pickle pot do the same as what an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner would do?
@lizthemetalsmith
@lizthemetalsmith 8 ай бұрын
Nope! The pickle pot is just a small crockpot that heats up vinegar and salt to remove firescale. The ultrasonic is used after polishing, it vibrates with soap and water to clean the polishing compound off. :) I don’t use an ultrasonic anymore, personally. Just soak the pieces in warm water and dish soap and scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush.

Hi I want to start making jewelry myself but I was wondering can you use gold instead of silver to make stamped jewelry?
@lizthemetalsmith
@lizthemetalsmith 8 ай бұрын
You can, definitely! Gold is just very very much more expensive than silver. There is something called ‘gold filled’ that you can look into, though! It’s basically a solid tube of gold with a base metal core (copper or brass I think?). A lot better than gold plated and a lot cheaper than solid gold! :)

Sorry but: What to the Hell is a Metalsmith? In the blacksmith shop there is the "fine blacksmith" who makes jewelry, the armorer and the art blacksmith... no metalsmith (At least in Europe, that's how it is. It's quite possible that it is used differently in the UK and America. ). All blacksmiths are metal workers. Why do people invent terms of art? I don't understand it, we blacksmiths are proud of our craft, which is one of the oldest, and then we reinvent artistic terms and have no idea what we're trying to achieve with it. Ore ist this in english real a titulation of Smiths/Blacksmiths? i am Confused.
@lizthemetalsmith
@lizthemetalsmith 8 ай бұрын
Hi! The term 'metalsmith' is in every major dictionary online, at least here in the US. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word was first used in the 14th century. I've been a metalsmith…silversmith…"fine blacksmith"…whatever you want to call me, for about 10 years and l've always called myself a metalsmith. All of the other metal artists I've met along the way also call themselves metalsmiths. I, personally, have never heard the term "fine blacksmith"...but the difference here is that if you were a jewelry maker and you happened to call yourself a "fine blacksmith", I wouldn't feel the need to question you. 😃 I'm sorry if you are offended...I didn't personally invent the word...but just as you're proud to do what you do and to be called what you think you should be called, so am I. I put my heart into what I do and I have *smithed metals* into beautiful things for thousands of people all over the world. Be well! Sincerely, Liz the Metalsmith ⚒️🔥

@@lizthemetalsmith Thanks, now I understand it, it's just very confusing because the metalsmith doesn't exist in German, for example. Here the blacksmith is no longer a profession but is now called a metal worker, which I think is a shame. I myself am a blacksmith in the artistic and historical field and therefore of course have a different familiarity with the blacksmith's craft than someone who makes jewelry, for example. In Germany, for example, there is the fine blacksmith and the rough blacksmith, which was the official name at the time of the guilds. I didn't feel attacked, it was just a bit confusing for me because I didn't know what it was like. Thank you for your answer, it's not a given on KZfaq. I also wish you good health and lots of success and fun making jewelry.
