I learned two new techniques from you that are invaluable. I thought I new everything about building a canvas from scratch for years, but I never actually thought of just cutting the wood at angle and adding an additional piece to make a corner-round.....I was nailing in corner rounds which is way inferior to what you just displayed. Your gridding in the back is interesting, because if I don't feel making a halflap cut on a larger piece, I can do just what you did and make smaller pieces and move up the center piece. Very good tutorial.

Wow, your video makes the process look so E-Z ... haha. To ensure my frames are square ... I use a square - I couldn't believe that you would just trust that your frame would com together squarely - because I use hand tools, regardless of how careful I am with my cutting - I still end up having to use a square - I got a " monster sized " metal one - the biggest I could find because I love huge frames. I always use framing brackets and gluing. I don't bevel the lumber. I don't do those support thingies on the ends. Building a frame actually takes up more of my time than the actual painting does - which is why I (when I can afford it) I buy professionally made frames like the one you've made here. This vid is loaded with useful info. for anyone who wants to take the plunge into building their own frames. The DIY feelings can be very rewarding. Thanks for sharing ....

Would you do all of this same stuff with the wood parts if you were making a canvas half that size? If not, I'd like to make a video request to you because all the other canvas-making videos I've seen don't have nearly the same quality in structure and tension that yours has. Thank you for making this video, by the way!

Hello Glenn, thanks for an excellent how-to lesson. Hope you have an advice for me. I bought an oil painting that is not stretched yet. It's about 30x36. I need to fold as little as possible around the frame because the composition will ruined, the artist did not leave enough space around the painting... What's the best way to deal with this? Thanks in advance!

Nicely built. The only thing I do differently is at the corners. I fold the canvas under so that no diagonal layer is visible, also no extra staples on the sides are required.

beutiful done! I would like to get hold on bigger canvases, also using the linen i prefer. really inspiring! a question, maybe a little late. do you not need to ree-stretch the canvas later? been impressed by this kind of custom frames but in my head, as you paint on it you will stretch the canvas a little. making it loose when your done. an easy reply to this comment could be “no”. haha. thanks for the inspiration.

Working from one center with three staples, going to the opposite end and stretching that center with three more staples. Now do the same process on each of the sides of the frame. Now start over again with the first side you started and put three more staples. Now go to the opposite side again, stretch and do the same thing. Now do the sides again. Do it all in the same order, working left and right, left and right, back and fort, back and forth as you work each side. The goal is to force the lack of the canvas into the corners evenly. It helps keep the canvas absolutely the same flat on all areas. I do like the way he made the frame. It's tough making perfect corners when it's just straight two flat ends connecting together. Good technique. Would be good also to check it with a corner square.

Hi, excellent video demo. I need to know what you suggest to have the canvas not run over the edge with the image. They are with a black border. I do not want the image to be cut off or wrap around but show the edge accurately. The quality of one company I am using is good but they still tell me the accuracy is very difficult. I wonder if I should send them a file with a ¼" black border to the size required so that when they add the black border the stretching will pull up to the actual edge of the images. Will

i appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into a frame like this, good job by the way. But would conventional precut stretcher bars and cross braces make it easier?
@dasinc
@dasinc 6 жыл бұрын
yeah they would make it much easier, but would be way more expensive. He is in Australia and the cost for the wood used, would have only been about $30 tops. Pre-made stretcher bars would be a lot more than that for that size.

Thank you for the great tutorial! I've made two large canvasses using your technique. I was wondering how many coats of gesso you use on raw canvas. And do you water it down or do you simply use a wet brush? Also, how long do you let it dry between coats and do you sand after every coat or do you sand at all?
