I've never seen such a detailed palette set up before and omfggggg. The square punch! I did swatches like this once for a value chart and cut ever one of them out using a paper cutter. I LOVED that chart but never made another because it was too much work. Thanks for sharing that tip!!
@MeowMeowKapow

AHAHA, I could TOTALLY see never wanting to make another moveable chart like this again if you had to cut them all out by hand. Truthfully, my current Daniel Smith studio palette has 48 colors in it right now and drove me absolutely batty. I bought the punch the next day...NEVER AGAIN! =>.

I have SO MANY craft punches now because after I started making shrinky dink ornaments and stuff, I got tired of hand-cutting the holes I needed to string them with. This square punch opened up a whole door of punching opportunities for me. They take up a lot of space but save sooooo much time.

Wow! This is the first palette I have seen with repositionable color swatches! I LOVE the idea so you can customize your palette as you change some of the colors you want!!!! I would love to see someone come up with a ceramic mixing surface that you can slip into a palette. There is nothing like doing color mixing on a beautiful non-staining and non-beading up surface! That’s so cool! I glued my white night watercolor labels with some glue stick. The labels are plastic coated, so I can actually remove them and try this laminating idea what the glue dots. Because I keep adding colors to the set, I do have to move my swatches around. Also depending on what I’m painting, etc. I often find myself frustrated when my paint and swatches did not match their respective positions. And yes we are needing to be more innovative right now. But that’s not a bad thing LOL thank you

I love the idea of portable swatch squares for changing out colours. Also, the washi tape cover is great! One suggestion I came across, that I haven't tried, was to use Yupo as a white mixing surface in the lid.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
It’s honestly more handy being able to rearrange those than you’d think! Sure, it’s kind of a pain to do initially, but well worth it overall. I’ve seen other people use yupo as a mixing surface before! I don’t have any so I don’t use it, so I have used wax paper before because why not? It’s not really important to me personally to have a white surface because I’m so bad at “seeing” my color mixes that I always end up swatching them on scrap paper anyway. =>..

Meow Meow Kapow I understand completely. I was over enthusiastic and filled a huge (HUGE) metal tine with all my watercolors, without labeling and then of course I dropped the tin and they all came tumbling out and one year later I still don’t know what’s what. But, I did learn to just appreciate the watercolor pans for what they were without judging by brand or pigment nr, a very valuable lesson for me!

Oh man, I know about myself that I’m a disaster zone and WILL knock everything over no matter how well it’s secured to a surface, so I knew from the first palette I ever made that I was always going to label my pans first.....which really came in handy when I was building a 24 color set of Qor paints and dropped the entire thing on the floor after spilling them! My carpet is still a bit purple despite a to. Of scrubbing, and there’s cat hair in most of the colors that’s just never going to come out and I have to accept that. =>.

I already have one! May have even used it in this video? The corners don’t matter to me much, though; I almost never make color charts like this nowadays because i mostly just make mini palettes with like 5 or 6 colors in them. The big studio palettes get the full treatment, though!

Have you thought about writing on your swatches, applying the tape, applying the dots, THEN cutting them out? If you make a grid, sized to match your punch (which is a BRILLIANT idea btw!!), you are working on a LARGE piece if paper, can see what your spacing is for writing and dots, and don't have to fiddle with all the little pieces several times. Just a thought from and older watercolorist, who has arthritis in her thumbs!
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
This is an interesting idea, but there are a couple of things about this streamlined process that wouldn’t work with my current tools. One, the opening to insert a piece of paper into the punch is not large enough to accommodate a glue dot, so that would probably gum up the works a bit. =>..

I love this tutorial and I think you are a great water colorist. Thank you so much for your input. Love Terri Simmers. I have not yet picked out the brand to use yet. I think I like the Danial Smith brand of water color. The paints are much brighter and more pigmented then the other brands.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
Daniel smith are one of my favorites! If you haven’t already, you may want to consider trying out small sets from different brands you’re interested in. For instance, sennelier has a watercolor test pack (I reviewed it if you’re interested) that has five colors for less than $20. Daniel Smith has a split primaries set of 5ml tubes for usually about $20-30 (but that’s enough to fill a half pan 2-3 times with each of the six colors). Those are my current top two favorite brands, though in a recent video a friend gave me some M. Graham paints and those are CRAZY pigmented, too. They don’t really have a “sampler” set, but they do have mini collections of five or six colors that have been put together in one box specifically to work together for a certain type of scenery. They might interest you as well!

I’ve seen those!!! I actually was looking for a cigarette case that I liked a while ago EXACTLY to make into a Travel palette...hm. No idea why I gave up on that, actually. Also! If you want pans that are easily movable, use makeup pans! You can either buy empty ones from amazon or eBay or whatever, or you can go to the dollar store and buy makeup palettes and smash the eye shadow out of the little metal pans inside and fill those up with paint and attach thin magnet tape (I’ve found an even thinner one that what’s in this video and showed it during my mini altoids palette build, I think) so you can move them around and swap them out if you change your mind!

Because I prefer to be able to swap out the pans easily if I want to empty them and reuse them! For me, it’s easier to just change the masking tape than try to remove the sharpie marks. 🤷‍♀️ we each do what works for us, I guess? I’m big on inpermanence, it seems! LOL! Oh ok! That makes sense. I was just curious cause you didn’t say in the video. I tried to wash and change colors of the have pans once, I don’t know, I found it much work but that’s me. Jackson and amazon have half pans for relatively cheap, I’m so super lazy I guess. Once I use a half pan for a color imma be too lazy to chance colors. But that’s a really good tip.

Most of the travel palettes I use on the regular are just those little mini altoids ones and I stopped making swatch charts for them long ago. I just make too many mini palettes and don’t feel like taking the extra step!

I guess that’s a decent enough idea, but then how would you know what color you were reaching for? Some of them don’t look the same in the pan as they do when painted! For small palettes like 5 or 6 colors it’s easy for me to remember, but for a palette with 24 paints, that I only use sometimes? I’d never stand a chance! 😂

Meow Meow Kapow I don't pay much attention to the names. Usually I have an idea of how these colors work. When I use a new color I experent with it first.

This might be stupid but do you wait for the paint to dry? Did I miss that in the whole video? xD
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
That’s a great question! It comes down to personal preference, really. I think it’s easier to work from dried paint, so I waited overnight right after I put the new paint in. Because it’s liquidy and I flipped the container upside down a bunch, it was also easy to build all the tape and ring holder and stuff with the paint being dry. Plus, when you see someone “pour” a large amount of paint like that (for watercolor anyway), there’s almost no way they’d be able to use it all up before it dried out on its own. That being said, some people prefer to work with fresh, wet paint so you could theoretically do all the tape and stuff first and then add the wet color as you needed it! Does that help explain what I did a little better? Thank you for asking! =^.^=

@@MeowMeowKapow But the smell of the nail polish... isn't that too much? I use it once and a while and when I do I have to put the thing I'm working on away before I start fainting from the fumes. By the way, at the moment I'm bingewatching all the diy-palette making video's you put up. Sooo great, instructive, creative and many adjectives I don't know in English :) Reading most of the comments too is adding to what there is to know about paints in general and making palettes etc. I already subscribe to yr channel a while ago but only now I'm really diving in into this particular item.

Welcome! It’s so nice to have you here! =^.^= As for the nail polish....well, I think our experiences are different. Fun fact about me! For about two years I was the in-house art director at a nail polish company, meaning I was surrounded by nail polish smell for over 40 hours a week for a good long while. I no longer smell nail polish at all. I do remember that I used to really hate the smell, and probably would feel like it was annoying... but it dries quickly enough and the scent doesn’t stay after so if you paint it outside that might be a good solution for you.

does your paint come out of the pan when it has dried and shrunk?
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
Pretty much all paints shrink, and if they shrink so much that they fall out of the pan you can either put s me water in the pan or just add more paint to fill it under more. The Holbein ones haven’t shrank so much that they fall out but even if they had, it’s a solvable problem.

Does white spray enamel stain easily? I know it shouldn't bother me, but it bothers me when my palettes stain. Especially all these new craft palettes from Prima and Jane Davenport.

Truth be told, I’ve only sprayed the inside of one palette, and it was with matte paint (and then I gave it away as a gift) so I don’t know what the effects are. I more often than not leave them unfinished like this because I don’t want to have to wait another full day or more to use my palette when I’ve already spent two or three days building it! That being said, I believe that it would stain as much as any other metal palette would because it’s more based on the paint than anything else. I’ve got “high end” and “low end” palettes and the only ones that are 100% stain-proof are the ceramic/porcelain ones, but those aren’t really convenient for Travel. =>.

question. do you let the paint dry up in the slots to make sure they dont mix/leak out or is it just thick enough to not worry?

I’m going to be making one of those eventually, but given how many colors I’ve accumulated, it wouldn’t be realistic to take for travel. A lot of my favorite tiny mini palettes are the ones I use most, since doodling out in the world is my jam!
