Got one of these for my daughter's first sewing project, came out great, well thought out and fairly easy. I will say it's a bit heavy for sewing on a small home machine, it worked but not without issues, actually ran out of thread due to Knotts and breaking. Overall great kit, I plan on buying others in the future.

Thanks so much for your great instructional video. Quality training. As the postage to Australia was excessive I had to figure out the pattern by watching your video and taking best guess estimates of sizes and scale. I've just finished my zippered roll toolbag! It looks similar to yours too which is a bonus. Doing this project has given me the confidence to tackle bunk mattresses and an awning for my boat. You guys rock. Thank you

@@meganmarques2767 I just worked it out as I went and didnt really create a plan. You need to listen to what he says in terms of the sizes of any materials he is working with. taking note of his fabric width, webbing , and any mention of a measurement. Then convert to metric for AU. Look at his parts layout and mimic that. You will never get it exact but it only needs to be close. Its such a shame they dont make these plans available as a pdf. just a layout diagram with key measurements. I wasnt trying to get something for nothing but the postage cost for their plan was insanely expensive. Id been happier to pay them for a pdf instead. they dont seem interested in doing business with Australia.

Thank you for this video. Lots of details that help and guide. I made this bag using the pattern and this video. Did the bag in red cordura as it will be a medical kit for my son's truck. I changed up the handle to a buckle on webbing so the bag can hang from the headrest. Also added small handles to the side at the end of the zipper so it can be grabbed and carried apart from the roll.

Thanks! This was the first of many types of up and coming project kits, available from Sailrite, which will include a plotted pattern with the kit.. So... I would expect future kits to come with a little more detail in the patterns. Every added line or text adds to the time it takes to plot each pattern on our 50 foot plotter table, so we have to balance it carefully to provide good content on the patten, but also not bog down the time it takes to plot it. We are already behind on plotting for all the orders coming in, which is good news! But yes, in the future kits, coming soon, you will likely see more details on patterns.

Great video as always, fantastic presentation style, just the right level of detail! For anyone using a domestic machine who obstinately refuses to be told they can't do the "optional" step of pinching up the handle and sewing through 8 layers right up against a bulky seam - I highly recommend using a leather sewing awl (Speedy Stitcher or similar, doesn't need to be expensive, just robust). Ran one of the hembobs through the small needle I had (don't bother using the awl's bobbin mechanism), and made a very tidy (I dare say tidier than my machine stitches) job of it. I recommend against using the basting tape (which I do otherwise find useful!), and instead use sewing clips to hold the sides together (or possibly clothing pegs if you don't have any) - the needle and thread get quite gummed up just from the 8 layers of cordura backing alone, so a bit of isopropyl and a paper towel come in handy too. This was after I stubbornly tried to do it on my Record 830 - was able to handcrank, but the results were pretty bad - sewing awl was basically as fast and infinitely better for this one!

OK... I finished the kit... it's really well planned. The video instructions are good as I watched what I was supposed to do - paused the video - did the work - and moved along to the next step. The project is good for beginners... the kit has about everything... plastic windows, zippers, box cushion fabrication, hook and loop, snaps... and the handle calls for sewing through eight layers... as there are four tool pouches you get the chance to get better as you work your way from the first to the fourth. I also learned more about my LS machine... I managed to spike the needle into the hook and it made a burr... the burr shredded the thread until I read the trouble shooting section of the manual... a bit of 1500 grit sandpaper smoothed the hook-face - no more shredding. Ill buy another couple kits and sew them as gifts - the bag is really nice...

This is a nice way to practice many techniques for sure. I do have a question, around minute 50 when placing the magnet to guide the material on the machine, wouldn't it be easier using the long side of the guide instead of just that little edge? I'm still getting used to the LSZ but seams with my singer were mostly crooked, granted I always pushed the machine to the limit with many layers or thick material.

I find that the deluxe magnetic guide on the small end lets me make turns easier and it also helps me keep the fabric up against the guide directly across from the needle. Keeping the correct seam allowance is mostly important directly across from where the needle enters the fabric than any other place.

Never done any machine sewing , but this looks GREAT. When you do the forward/ reverse reinforce stitching,care you flicking a switch off screen to do that ? Or just pulling the job back and forth ? Total rookie here 👍

Thanks for your kind comment about the tool roll bag with zippered pouches. When we are reversing our stitch I pull a lever off the right down and hold it while reversing. When I am done I let go of the lever and it springs back up and sews in forward.

I agree with the comments below about how great your videos are. In fact, the videos were a large contributing factor as to why I bought an Ultrafeed machine! One question, however...I noticed that you are not holding or pinning the trailing threads when you start your stitch, something that you have pointed to in other videos that you always need to do to avoid tangled threads. Is this not the case?

Thanks for your kind comments. Holding the trailing threads before you sew is always recommended. When you see us not doing that in a video, it is only because we got lazy or forgot. When we do not hold the trailers we have a 50/50 chance of creating a bird's nest of messed up thread on the bottom side. So... it is a big gamble that should not be taken.

Thanks for the clarification. That makes perfect sense, because EVERY time I forget to hold the threads I get that bird's nest LOL. I've actually started using a 1-2-3 method every time...1-presser foot down, 2-hold the threads, 3-reversing stitch. I'm sure as I get better this will all be second nature, but for now it's really helping. Thanks again for these videos!@@SailriteDIY

Unfinished panels are 13 x 7 and the edge is 3 inch. So roughly 12.25 x 6.25 x 2.25 inches I think.

Finished Measurements: 31"L x 12-1/2"W, unrolled. Each of the 4 zippered pouches are 12"L x 5"W x 2"D.

what is the best way to store the pattern cut-outs after they've been used and glued?

Simply stack them and roll them up together. Then place a few rubber bands around it. The excess glue can cause them to stick together, but they should come apart with a little effort when you want to use them again.

I actually want to learn how to sew.. well.. sew correctly.. I can do stuff, but it ain't gonna be pretty. If I want a specific tool roll or fabric item in a specific setup.. it's easier to make it yourself. In my experience you'll almost never find a pre made item that perfectly suits your needs.

ok I watched the video , few things i would change I would reenforce boxes with some kraft board , would not put in clear vinyl I would put canvas in the front use a die cutter and write out contents on front of box with htv , i am wondering why you folded over the outside edges over so much ? seemed like a waste , especially were this fabric doesnt fray .,. and lastly how do I get pattern ? I have lots of scrap that would be good for this but I only saw the kit . I dont need kit I have all I need in supplies . thank you deb bushee Black Magic Woman

Hello, why doesn't the needle stick together when they sew over the tape. For me, the thread always breaks. What am I doing wrong? I would be happy about your feedback. Sebastian from Neuss Germany

Usually glue build up on needles does not happen with medium to heavy weight fabrics. Using basting tape (Seamstick) for canvas on a very light weight fabric may gum up the needle rather quickly because the lighter fabric does not have the larger fibers or weave to help clean the needle as it exits the fabric. In those situations it may be best to use a seamstick that does not have as strong an adhesive (like item #20306) or instead use pins to hold the fabric in place as you sew. A gummed up needle and parts can be cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or Goo Gone (we do not sell this). I like to use McLube #845 on my parts and needle to clean and keep glue from building up.

I had this same problem. The basting tape supplied with the kit wreaked havoc on the project for me. My LSZ handled every fold and material like a champ but each time the needle passed through the Seamstick, it left adhesive on the needle and caused the thread to break. Is there any way to manage this problem. I still have the four bags to do and I can’t imagine doing them without the aid of double sided tape.

This is a great tutorial video. 🪡🪡🪡🪡🪡🪡. There are several from Sailrite though I believe this presenter is the best. This kit is great and the pattern material if very durable. Something others have noted, having printed instructions would be nice. My only issue with the project is the basting tape collects fairly quickly on the needle causing a problem with sticking . I have a Singer Signature - 9340 and switching to teflon coated needles dramatically improved the issue.

Hey, thanks a bunch for the shoutout! And yeah, the basting tape sticking to the needle can be a real pain with lighter weight fabrics and a home sewing machine. Good thing you found a solution with those teflon coated needles! I love using basting tape, so if I have to sew lighter fabrics with basting tape, I keep a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol socked on it and wipe the needle when it builds up. Happy sewing, my friend!

the zippers are going to drive me mad. I cannot get them on at all. I am making a real mess as the zipper is now fraying. Do you have any tricks as to how to get them on? I'm very FRUSTRATED...

No hot knife cutting that fabric is going to make the inside of those bags a fuzzy stringy mess when those edges get worn.

We used Cordura HP fabric which features a clear polyurethane coating on the back. This coating prevents cut edges from fraying, so no hot knife is required.

@@SailriteDIY How long is that polyurethane coating going to last? I have tons a lot of gear where Cordura poly backed fabric has frayed after a decade.

@@elffirrdesign2063 If your fabric has lasted a decade, which is 10 years, before fraying occurred, I would say that is excellent. I am not sure how long Cordura HP will last because it depends on how heavily the bag is used. I will say that it is a very tough fabric for this kind of applications.
