This is a traditional Malaysian Chinese yellow rice also known as turmeric rice or "nasi kunyit" in Malay language. It is creamy and rich flavoured with coconut milk and cream and perfect to eat with curry. The rice is made using glutinous rice, most commonly known in Southeast Asia as sticky rice. This sticky rice or yellow rice is significant to Malaysian Chinese families when the baby reaches his/her first month. The tradition is not as widely practiced in modern days as I once knew where I grew up in Penang, Malaysia. It was traditionally cooked by the baby's family and the sticky rice or yellow rice was given as a gift to relatives and friends. This type of sticky rice or yellow rice is easy to make in your own home to share with your family and friends. Hope you enjoy this week "how to make sticky rice" recipe and video.
Just a word of caution if you have never used turmeric before. It can stain your clothes. So be very careful when you are using turmeric.
