Today I'll review how to prepare a yeast starter from start to finish using liquid yeast and Proper starter wort, including how to calculate yeast pitch rate. This will help to ensure you have healthy yeast cells in order to complete fermentation and reach your target final gravity every time.

Love ya vid's cobber,, very nice setup..... nice yeast the Wyeast. Those cans are interesting i haven't seen them on the Australian market yet.. Sound practices, clean.. What's brewing next ? Interesting you mention leaving it in the fridge to cool down and help drop that excess yeast.. i haven''t been doing it yet know it's a thing in all other processes.... i pitched a harvested yeast, 37.5 billion cells made into a 1.1L starter off 12.5ML of harvested yeast, i calculated around 3 billion cells per ML to get me going and it looked rather small when pitching. was 48 hrs out from pitch.

Hello and thanks for the comments! Yes the Proper starter wort cans changed the game for sure and much easier. Maybe there are other similar products on the market? I just brewed a classic American pale ale and will be releasing a step-by-step brew day video soon. Yes I always refrigerate my starter yeast and it also helps maintain yeast viability as well.

After refrigeration do you decant the starter and just pitch the yeast cake into the wort?

After refrigerating and decanting the starter the yeast cake is packed to the bottom which is what you want so I add some wort via the sample valve on my fermenter and mix it around using a magnet on outside with the stir bar inside to loosen things up and then pitch the yeast/wort mixture
