In the UK most people use metric.When ordering materials they can come in metric or imperial. Timber can come in both, you can get a 4''x2''@4.2mtrs, but the 4''x2'' is actually 95mmx45mm.

Thank you Bob for all your helpful information! I kept wondering why my measurements were always just a little off. Your explanation about the wiggle room on the tape measures just makes me go, "Doh"! I guess everyone is supposed to know this?

Up in Canada we usually use a metric / imperial tape.. Because on government contracts (And in the Canadian Electrical Code) the plans are all in mm but we all use inches for practical reasons (Our supplies are mostly in imperial units). As an electrician I really don't need to measure to within a mm. Even for pipe I can have 1/8th to 1/4 inch error and still be fine. What annoys me about the combination tapes is that if you're measuring from an awkward angle you might have to use cm... And on another measurement you have to use inches because the units are on opposites sides of the tape. You have to be good at math to be a Canadian electrician.

I note your comments and, while this may not be the appropriate place for these remarks, I offer the following - speaking from Australia which (like South Africa and New Zealand) successfully converted to metric usage in a few years during the 1970s:- If you are going to work to specifications which are in Millimetres, I STRONGLY urge you to obtain a tape which is calibrated ONLY in Millimetres across the tape or, perhaps better still, on BOTH edges. (NOTE: Only in Millimetres - no Centimetres [or Inches] or Both) For information as to the reasons for this advice, please see two essays at themetricmaven.com/?m=201207 plus (at least scan) the very full discussion of this matter at themetricmaven.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/centimetresORmillimetres.pdf - which is referred to in the above essays. Millimetre tapes ARE available, although they appear not to be READILY available in North America. In fact. there almost seems to be a conspiracy NOT to make such items available there. For an example of this, look up “Stanley 33-829”. This tape, widely available in Australia, is made in the USA but it does not seem to be available there! For another similar tape, as sold in Australia, see ebay items 260820705392 or 281457326164 Or,search for Lufkin FL48SI For a “ Metric/Metric Reverse measuring tape”, search for FastCap-PMMR which (although made in China) you will find ONLY in North America (Go figure!)

aha i have a new tape measure purchased it recentlly. as i am sure you know most people just but the end of the tape against the wall and then add on the distance of the tape body all tape bodys have a measure menton them that tells how much you have to add. but back tomy new tape. on the under side the measurment for the tape body has already been deducted and you just need to but it up against the wall.

I love your posting thanks so much and keep up the great work. I bought a Rotozip per your drywall demos. I am finishing my basement and my outlets and around windows and doors cuts look great! Thank you PS ever thought about a video on ceiling tongue and groove? I just purchased a BoWrench and intend to use that to get a nice fit but would love you take on a project like this.

For goodness sake. Use the metric system. For accuracy you just use millimeters. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. 10mm=1cm 100cm=1m. 1000m=1km. In science they use the metric system for a reason. It's easy to covert.

I grew up in Canada with the metric system. I use centimetres and millimetres to measure a lot of things, but I personally find both units to be too small for most carpentry. A 1/16th of an inch is a good margin of error for most cuts. Moreover, counting millimetres on a tape strains the eyes, whereas a fraction of an inch can be discerned quite quickly with a bit of practice. It is all personal preference, but I believe there are reasons other than tradition that this system is still around.

Dear Bob, You probably heard this one, but most aluminum casings has its size writing on it . If thats not the case i always cut of the string at the rear end ( if one attached ) and measure the casing with the rear to the wall from the front of the casing. Write this down on the casing and then you can bottom out with the casing. works similar to the wooden ruler u used. Greets

I always take a second tape and check by measuring the orig. tape while its still locked down to make sure I'm getting a good read . Then continue on . The folding rule with the slide out is really the best methed . Johnny Strawser 28 year Union Carpenter thank you for the tips.

These are excellent tips. One question on measuring the to the edge of a wall. When we use the two measurement approach, don't we overestimate the length slightly by adding the thickness of the L clamp at the start of the tape twice?

I like the fractional ones. the dewalt tape is fractional and had different colors for 1/4 inches and different color for 1/8" marks. handy

Good info Bob! A good quality laser tape is the bees knees! It can measure over distances that are difficult to reach or requires two people... It can also calculate the area, volume etc... It also can use Pythagoras for getting heights when obstacles are in the way of a direct drop. I must admit though, I found myself using the normal tape to check the laser at first. Once again, good info, i recon that you covered all bases for the handy man.

Nice video. I do have one question though. I can't seem to find any videos about marking for a cut. By that I mean, when you mark a line to cut a piece of wood, have do you handle that line? Do you cut to leave the line? Do you cut to the left or the right? Do you cut down the middle? what if your blade is thicker or thinner than the line? What is your rule? Cheers

When I use the technique of subtracting an inch to make a more accurate mark, I will then double check the location of the my mark by hooking the end of the tape on the board and measuring to see if I am close to the true desired measurement. This second measurement doesn't require the precision of the first since it is a double-check, and therefore isn't bothered by the rivets/holes being out of round. Measure twice, cut once.

You can only "burn" an inch if you are measuring less than a foot or if someone else holds end. You didn't mention when purchasing a tape make sure the hook is perfectly flat. I see too many with slight bend making measuring off. The tape that you showed with the 1/8" 1/2" etc markings is the best for amateur DIY. Helps them learn accurate measurements instead of saying " 5 ft 1inch and 6 little marks" the rivets loosen through abuse only, letting tape go full speed in from full out, dropping, throwing other tools on it. I have been woodworking for 50 years and have tape measure I still use that are that old. A metric one is needed, in Canada especially, most all building products are sold in imperial. You showed measuring on the wall but you let the tape sag causing the measurement to be off. Also using the body off the tape for inside measurements is also an option, most all tape bodies have the width marked on it.

Here is an important tip. lets say we need to drill 5 holes all in a line that start 1" from the left end of a board and are 5 1/4" apart on center. Always pull your measurements from the left end of the piece and do the math to figure out where the marks go Like this. First hole at 1" then 6 1/4, 11 1/2, 16 3/4, and finally 22. If your off on each mark by 1/16 then each hole should still be accurate enough to work. This is apposed to measuring the first hole from say the left at 1", then putting your tape on that mark and measure 5 1/4" to the next hole and so on. in this example, if you are off by 1/16 on each hole this way, your last mark could be off by as much as 5/16! that will never pass QA.

@MrDhandley Always cut to the outside of the line away from the piece of wood you need. The thickness of your blade will make your piece too small if you cut middle or wrong side.+++Bob

I place a short piece of blue masking tape on the wall before I make any pencil markings. That way I simply pull off the tape instead of trying to erase any markings or having to touch up the paint.

I always figured a laser tape was good for getting rough or approximate distances.Unless its calibrated to engineering standards.Would you actually use it to cut ,oh lets say,crown molding ?+++Bob

Bob you do a great Video. I would like to see you make a Video on Metric Measurements, like use you metric tape to see how much carpet you need in a room, how long is you driveway. We have to move to Metric in the U.S.A. soon. We are almost changed over to metric and almost know one realizes it. Look at you Bottled water its . 500 Ml ; or you pills; So the last thing we ,the U.S.A. , have to do is get the Measurement tape changed over. I been waiting over 50 years for this to happen.

How about adding the 3 inches or what ever is stamped on the tape itself, it might be 31/2" when doing an inside Measurement, by Butting buth ends of the tape .

@CBSNEWS69 Sorry to join the discussion so late, but don't laser rangefinders actually use sonar? In that case they can be fouled by objects in the room. I was told the laser is only a target to aid us in aiming.

hey bob I'm no pro or anything, but I was wondering why you measure things in the middle. Or rather why don't you measure at the bottom or top. How dol you know your tape is not higher or lower on one end making the measurement longer?

When I saw the butt measurement trick,I felt like kicking myself in the butt for not thinking of it.It would have saved me much frustration the last time I had to cut baseboards.

Most contractors don't use TM for that just match the piece right up to the project lol we use the TM just to point to things we cant reach with our hands/ yeah a pointer!

I burn 10 inches.. that way the last number remains the same.. 47-7/8" becomes 37-7/8".. the inch monster doesn't get you that way.. also Lee Valley sells a little "tape tip" for a few dollars.. at first you might think it's one of those useless gadgets but it is actually an awesome accessory especially for odd ball measurements and working alone..

What's confusing me is I can't get my tape measure and my speed square/carpenter's square to agree. The squares all agree on 11 1/4" but the tape is adding 1/32nd" or 1/16th" even when the fork is pushed in against the end of the tape.. cut 12 slats and they were all wrong! Wasted a sheet of 1/4" poplar.

Don't you mean subtract an inch? If you measure a 1 ft length starting at the 1 inch mark on your tape measure your reading would be 13 inches not 11 so you would need to subtract an inch right??

how can I measure straight when measuring horizontal lengths? I'm trying to measure cores and I'm always off

for your butt it dont bend it trick. you can just but your dummy end on one corner, then butt the tape measurer itself into the other corner. Say the tape comes out to 105". Then most tapes will have written on the back or bottom the width of the tape measurer itself. My Lufkin is 3 and 5/8 wide. so i take 105 add my 3 and 5/8" for my finish measurement of 108 5/8". If your tape is not marked with a dimension of its width, It will typically be 3" wide for a 25' or bigger tape. Not always but typically.

All the tape measures you introduced have very practical uses. You should learn how to read and use each type unless all you do for a living is rough framing. And by the way, the metric tape that you say you will probably only use once... its the accepted global standard of measuring. Everywhere except in the USA. Get with the times!

The feet marks are on both those tapes. They are just hard to see.

Thanks for the excellent video. I did notice that you say the inch monster might cause you to cut your wood short. Wouldn't it be one inch too long if you took it literally and forgot to SUBTRACT the inch that you ADDED by starting with the one-inch mark? This is actually an extra plus, since a mistake will always give you another shot and you can slice off that last inch.

Only three nations have not officially adopted the International System of Units as their primary or sole system of measurement: Myanmar (Burma), Liberia, and the United States And 2 of them are a dictatorship go figure The whole world uses the same expect the the usa go figure but seriously just start using it on some real projects and after a while you wil know it is better. you only should be far enough to get out of your comfferd zone

Ancient history using Imperial tapes. The world is metric. 195 countries are metric, and only one is Imperial. Guess who, and now 50 years behind the rest of the world in this respect.
